I have been racking my brain to come up with a birthday present for my dad's 60th bday. I was thinking of getting him a griptilian and getting something engraved on the blade. Then i thought about getting him a .22lr conversion for his 1911 or Glock 19(yea right none in stock anywhere). Those were there only two things i could think of.

Anybody else have any other ideas that might be semi-unique?

So I am guessing strippers are out of the question?

Actually, I did find some of the Kimber .22 conversion kits in stock, and one on sale:

You are right, no one has the AA G-19 kits advertised. But you might call Paul at Big State Distributors. He had three a week or so ago.

Does your father enjoy reading? Perhaps a gift certificate to a book store? Maybe an electronic reader, such a a Kindle?

I would normally suggest a magazine subscription, but I read very few print magazines for firearms these days. Does he have another interest?

If he has a 1911, perhaps a nice set of grips? Pistol grips or stocks are often quite an individual preference, much like knives.

Some good mags for his 1911? Or how about some practice ammo, if you can find any.

If he enjoys a tasty beverage, you might do that. I have a particular fondness for 18-year-old single malt Scotch, myself.

As long as you stay away from wallets, ties, Old Spice cologne, and other such abominations, you should be okay. I am a lot closer to 60 than 40, and my children have strict orders on gifts. ;)

I know it's not a USC or Colt 9mm but it's still blast to plink with. My dad bought one two years ago for his G19 and it runs like a champ. I would guess 2K+ with no issues.

I havent had an issue finding the 1911 conversion kits, they are everywhere. A local shop has about 10 in stock.

Books are out, he doesnt read much, or at least I would not know what kind of book to get him.

He doesnt drink much, just some wine or beer occasionally.

As far as knives, he doesnt even have one currently, so I guess that wouldn't be to personal of a choice. If he doesnt have one, he doesnt know what he likes or dis-likes. Thats why I was thinking of a griptilian because tons of people really like them. Just gotta find a shop in town that doesnt rape you on the price like Cabellas(120 for a knife I can get online for 80 bucks, come on).

The only issue I am running into in buying a .22lr conversion kit for anything is that him and I have been running the numbers on re-loading recently and I would almost rather take the $300 the conversion kit costs and just spend $100 more and buy the Hornady AP press we have been looking at. I know thats kind of one of those presents that I would get as much use out of as him so its not a very personal present, but I think it would be better spent money in the long run and I think he would appreciate it just as much, or more, than something more personal.

Nah, I am looking for something that will shoot .22lr, not 9mm. Trying to make it cheaper to shoot for him. He already has a few rifles. Thanks for the suggestion though, those things look pretty cool.

May I politely recommend Mike at New Graham Pharmacy? They do a very good job, and I have probably bought a dozen or so knives from him.

Good prices, great service, and a family-run business.
