How close could one get to building a civilian legal xm177 copy?

Depends where you live, how much you want to pay, and how accurate you want the copy to be.

If your state allows SBRs, then you can make an accurate looking clone.

Getting the basic "look-alike" parts is not that hard, Colt commando 11.5" lightweight barrel (or an equivalent with the bayo lug milled off), A1 upper, A1 lower.

You'll need a Colt aluminum CAR buttstock, which are quite pricey and require some searching. You could use an EA or Bushmaster alum CAR stock, but the finish is not the same. There is probably a way to duplicate the finish to some degree, though.

As for the "moderator," non-NFA copies are avaliable, as are the real thing from Colt, but they are fairly rare and expensive and are registered silencers. XM177E2-type grenade launcher washer repros are available.

As for precisely matching all the small parts, and getting things like buffer tubes with the correct finish, it just takes time and money toget it as close a clone as you want.

Check out the retro section (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=123&t=469632) at TOS and www.retroblackrifle.com.

You can get very close.
