Here's my DSA STG58 I bought for use on patrol.

Some guys carry patrol carbines, I carry a Patrol EBR!

She will soon sport some form of optic, I just haven't decided exactly what yet...

Templar,
I remember you shooting that rifle at the 2nd Black Rifle Day. It was hell on the steel compared to the 11.5", 14.5" and 16" .223 ARs.

I like the top one.

Is that top rail bolted onto the upper receiver or how does that work exactly? I see the other one above has bolts too...

What's a set of front handguards like those cost? Reminds of the one in the TD ad...

the scope mount replaces the top cover - it slides in from the back. the screws tighten little clamps/plates which secure it to the receiver:

here's the handguard:

it looks like the one in the TD ad because it IS the one in the TD ad :)

Thanks, BCM3087. Since it's an Inch lower, there are hardly any parts available and the factory black plastic grip sucks, I made that one. It's made from a piece of black Delrin. I changed the angle down to more like a metric or an AR grip, it's wider and more rounded, and stippled all over. It has also been hollowed out like the original so that the trigger guard can be stowed inside. Even though it's black, I went ahead and Duracoated it along with the stock and handguards so they would all match and have the same sheen. The gray is Duracoat also.

Howdy fellas. First post here and I saw that some of you had some nice FALs displayed. Here's my contribution.

The StG is a an all original finish blued Belgian/early Austrian version. I blued the DCI receiver to match the original finish and patina.

The para is a DSA type 1 with an original NOS Belgian 458mm length (~18") para barrel and combo device. Lower is also DSA. This one is a custom build too.

I love FALs (and ARs)!

Very nice, how's DSA FAL ?

Fantastic!

I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist. I assembled the DSA over time and tried to use the best parts I could find. If you look at DSAs offerings the closest match you'll find is the para congo. Basically that one is almost the same character minus the OEM factory barrel (chrome chamber and lined). The new ones are 4150 chrome moly. Also, I have seen some "DSA paras" for sale on gunbroker that have steel lowers. The use of an aluminum lower (and aluminum magazine) keep the weight low and allow for a nice balanced feel that fits me.

Having been fortunate enough over the last 20 years to be able to try several MBRs, the paratrooper FAL is the one I prefer for various reasons. If you have the opportunity to try one I think you'll find a grin on your face after the first round. :)

Lookin' good!

I ABSOLUTELY WOULD NOT SBR that FAL. FAL's work great with a barrel 16.5" and up, especially 18" and up. If you cut the barrel down to 11" or so, you have just achieved the same velocity as an AK-47 from a 16" barrel, but with a huge amount of flash and blast, and a reduction in reliablity.

In the Larry Vickers Battle Rifle class this past year, the guy next to me on the line had a DSA OSW 11.5", and he had a lot of problems with it.

These rifles just weren't designed around itty-bitty barrels.

That is one of the best 21st Century Tac'd out FAL I have ever seen! Nice groupings too.

Cameron
01-14-08, 22:02
Eric that looks great!

We have similar tastes I see. I have been thinking about the railed fore end for the DSA but I don't want to increase the weight as I actually hump the damn thing around hunting. What do you think of the weight the rails added over the standard handguards?

EricCartmann
01-14-08, 23:48
You will lose a little in the offhand shooting category. Since you have the carbine FAL, the rails will not be has heavy.

But if you like your rifle as is, I would think hard about changing it with the rails. You will have to cut off the retaining ring to use the rails. And to put your old handguards back on, you will have to buy the 2 piece ring from DSA.

Same goes with the AR's too. I think you lose a little in the offhand shooting capabilities at first, but is something you can get use to.

Joe R.
01-15-08, 20:31
Eric, how has your Millett DMS held up on the FAL? I had one mounted and the illumination went out with one day of serious shooting (about 400 rounds). Millett has replaced the sight but I have yet to zero this one or wring it out yet.

no pics of my FAL....yet

one question though...anyone using the DSA extended mount? i'm wondering how much more rail it gives you and if the only modification needed is the removal of the carry handle (already gone on mine)

Cameron
01-19-08, 00:30
It really doesn't give you any more room for mounting an optic as the FAL receiver is plenty long enough, it just gives a continuous rail when adding the quad rail forearm.

That being said, I got the standard scope mount and now wish I had the extended as I am thinking of adding the railed handguards...

CJFirefly
01-28-08, 19:07
Hey Cameron, that optic is an IOR 1.1-4x, correct? I am going to be putting the same scope, that was leftover from an AR, onto a FAL. I was wondering what rings are you using?

Cameron
01-29-08, 20:52
I originally used the IOR high rings to clear the A2 rear sight... but ditched them in favour of a LaRue SPR 1.5 mount.

Thanks, I had the same scope in that mount on an AR and thought about putting it on the FAL, but I want the scope to be as low as possible (I just have the standard sights). I will probably use the IOR medium rings.

This is my first post here. I just got my first FAL about 2 weeks ago, and I love it. I purchased a DSA OSW with 11" barrel, all the bells and whistles, including a trigger job. I ordered it last September, took 6 months to get it, and 6.5 weeks for my form 4. I plan on ordering a 16" in a few months.

Sweet rifle Templar! Is that the Smith M14 replacement? Also, at the risk of sound like a complete moron, what is 50:63?

Thanks man.

It's a semi auto, not full auto, the rifle does have a select fire military lower, which is perfectly legal since the upper receiver, which is the controlled part, is not full auto.

It's one of the things I bought to replace the M14.

FN catalogued their FAL's with a 4 digit code, like Colt does (6920, 6721, 6520).

The 50:00 was the standard 21" barreled FAL with a fixed stock, the 50:61 was the same rifle with a folding Para stock.

The 50:63 was the 17.75" barreled carbine with folding stock, and an aluminum lower. The lower on this rifle is steel, but I might replace that.

That is an outstanding example of a 50.63 except for that dingus on the end of the barrel.
If I remember correctly it should have the normal combo device on it for accuracy but I can certainly see where that dingus could make a man green with envy!!!:D

Because even with all the FAL's in my house, I still want one like this one!!

Schweeeet. :D

I think that Steyr Short FH is perfect (unless you're thinking of mounting a can).

By way of warning any brake on that barrel is going to make you hated on the firing line. The DSA brake (the combo may be different) is notoriously obnoxious. I had one that literally brought a novice shooter to tears. I think you'll find that if you put a SAW grip on it, that the recoil is significantly more comfortable.

The FAL remains my fav rifle of all time.

Any ideas if the 30 rounders from DSA work well? I understand they're converted BREN mags. I'm surprised no one makes new 30 rd FAL mags. Any ideas where I can get some other than from DSA? They evidently don't want to ship any to NY, even though I'm an LEO, have letterhead, and I'm exempt from NY State law for possession. They want a purchase order and I can't get that unfortunately.

I don't own any as I have seen some that are not reliable. It seems to be hit and miss. Some work and some don't. I knew of a guy who had 3 and only one was 100%. I wonder why a company like DSA doesn't try and insure better quality. Some people have surmized that the problem is the springs are too weak. The Bren had the mags inverted and didn't have to work against gravity. Good luck in your quest! Have you tried a third party, maybe gunbroker.com.

I own 4 of them, and they all work fine. One of them will not hold the bolt open all the time after emptying a mag. I will tell you this, they are pretty heavy full but they do make a great rest to fire from. I would get some if you can. I am going to buy 4-6 more just in case.

Any ideas where I can find them through a store front other than DSA? DSA sells them for $35 each or $29.95 for 2+ and it seems they go for at least 40 online. DSA is being stubborn and I can't do much about it. I would like to get 5 to 10 before next year "just in case" myself. I may end up having to order through a friend who lives in a constitutionally friendly state if I can't find any online. DSA won't even ship rifles directly to NY so you'd have to go through another dealer and have it shipped to NY. Please PM me if you know where I can look. I can provide police ID and letterhead if need be. Thanks.

Bren Gun Mag Springs are probably your best option since I believe the 30 round mag is based on a Bren mag.

Coonan receiver.
PSAW buttstock and pistol grip
DSA Handgaurds
FSE Muzzle break
FSE Folding Charging handle
FSE gas piston

Interesting photo. I was a liaison officer with the New Zealand SAS at Khandahar in 2002. All the troopers I saw carried M4 carbines, like our Brit brethern. They were painted desert camo and had an older type Aimpoint sight on them. It would make sense that they had some L1A1s in reserve though. Perhaps that photo was taken a good bit later in the war. The only 7.62 weapons I got to see were some M-14s we had and the G3's the Danish and Norwegian forces had at the time.

That's a Bren mag from DSA that they modify to use in a metric rifle. I got several with the rifle, I haven't run them in it yet, but pushing 30 rds. of 7.62x51mm up is a lot to ask....the Bren fed down and used gravity to help feed.

I'll have to see how reliable they are.

With the DSA mount system, you leave the mount on when you clean it, treat it like a HK 91 or an AR15.

If you took it off, you'd have to totally rezero.

Thanks, Katar,

Okay. I think I see where my confusion is on my part. With My Belgian para, which is the only FAL that I have experience taking apart, I need to remove the top cover in order to get the whole bolt carrier out. The bolt mechanism is different from that of a fixed stock FN FAL.

Also, wouldn't it be hard to clean the chamber area without removing the topcover where the optic is attached? And if you did that, wouldn't it necessitate rezeroing?

Thanks.

Thanks for the links to DSA products. But I was wondering about removing the topcover to clean the gun--like the chamber and bolt--and if that would mess up the zero on the optics. I'm not meaning to seem dense. I can't see cleaning the chamber without removing the top cover--and I imagine that would mess up the zero.

I know realize probably should have been asking this in the FN info thread:(

You do not need to remove the scope mount on a para or standard FAL to clean the chamber or the inside of the upper receiver.

Simply remove the captured recoil spring, pull the bolt out and you can clean the inside of the upper and use a chamber brush if you please.

The DSA Para mount has a removeable recoil spring guide, that you take out, with the recoil spring, and then the bolt and carrier are pulled out, no muss no fuss.

You then just clean as you would an AR or an HK system, cleaning the chamber is just as easy.

Indeed... absolutely no need to ever EVER EVER take that top cover off. As I found out when I wanted to detail my new para last week. It took about an hour and four sets of monkey hands to get it back on. Ok... not quite that bad, but it wasn't fun and I probably won't be taking it off anytime soon. Yes you will have to rezero if you take the top cover/mount off. Best way to clean the chamber is to use an M14 style chamber brush. Really shouldnt be a need to remove the top cover.

The guide rod inside the top cover has been redesigned so that it can slide/snap in and out for cleaning so that the cover becomes semi-permanent. So far works perfectly and appears robust.

I would highly recommend if ordering one to get a few extra screws and internal plates and keep inside your grip compartment (if this is a duty rifle) and follow directions on installation religiously using Loctite and then with a metallic sharpie witness mark the screws and check them regularly for movement. If a screw & plate comes loose you will most likely get a malfunction and possible damage to gun. This DSA design is by far the BEST so a far and my early slide on ARMS cover was mediocre. ALL the internal screws and plates of the DSA model do NOT give me peace of mind as a true hard use design and I hope DSA will eventually redesign the entire upper receiver, but for now it works...watch those witness marks:eek:

More fuel on the fire. These are "California" FAL's. I run them with fake muzzle devices and the grip adapter so I can drop mags. No evil features...

When I am out of state, I put on my SAW grips so they're back to normal.

Haven't had the chance to shoot this one much since I painted her. Imbel kit on a DSA Type 1.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/mrbieler/Painted_FAL_2.jpg

This one is my SADF R1 clone. STG kit on a DSA Type 1. When I took this pic, it was a fixed 10 rounder configuration. Now it also sports the grip adapter and I can drop mags with it too. The Israeli stocked short barrel on the right is now the rifle in the first pic. I decided to put it on a diet and it weighs in at 9lbs with an empty mag. Almost 11 before the change.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/mrbieler/Two_Fals.jpg

The grip adapter isn't as bad in the hands as it looks. I have not been satisfied with the bullet button offerings in California for the FAL. The AR, on the other hand, has a lot more options.

I don't have one on my FAL stateside, but I think they are a good addition. I've found on my African FALs that the dust, sand and grit can cause the bolt to just not go into battery and you can often assist it forward with a finger or a few short jimmy strokes, but a forward assist is peace of mind. How is your FAL holding up to salt water? I'm guessing that is salt water around you?

IMO, it CAN be problematic. We had on armorer on board. He did inspect and dress weapons daily.

It could be an issue with some non-corrosive treated components. BUT w/ daily vigilance not an issue.

I don't have a picture available at the moment, but I had a DSA on order sometime last year and finally got it in Dec of last year or early January. I ordered the rifle with a picatinny metric lower and gas block and added the LaRue stamped troy buis front and rear. You can add any BUIS you like on it of course but I favor the Troy setup. I also ordered it with the Length of Pull side folding stock...not a very good cheekweld on it. Not sure if I can change it out but I've seen the DSA's with M4 type telescoping stocks. Here are the comments I posted prior:

It's retained by the four screws on the bottom of the Micro. So it's a dedicated mount. If it works out I'll see about having some more made. I might have them turn out a couple more for some of the high volume shooter SME's, dealers and industry guys to break, I'm sure they will do it before I do. This was just a concept I wanted to try out. I have to many irons in the fire right now to do a personal production ready testing.

I believe he posted this elsewhere and as he says it is not QD because there is no mount it is attached directly to the DSA Railed Dust Cover. So if you carried a spare slick dust cover and a screwdriver you could swap it out in the field but not quickly. If the sights work well thru the Aimpoint I would still consider it a combat viable option as reliable as Aimpoints are.

No the stock is made by Magpul, and is mounted to a standard mil spec AR15 buffer tube. The adapter that allows the buffer tube to by mounted to the FAL PARA hinge block was purchased from DSA and I believe is manufactured by ACE Rifle Stocks.

Love the FALs! Used to have a 18" Springfield Armory SAR48 Bush Rifle. Did use it once deer hunting and dropped a doe at 300m with one round. Remember having a H&R T48 in the arms room in Bad Tolz, Germany in 88-90 (wonder where that went) and pick up a Belgium 50.00 that was rebarreled with a Douglas match barrel and was a tack driver(could't bring it home due to Bush's ban:mad:). In Kuwait in 95' EOD unearthed 3 FN FALs from the desert. They cleaned them up and we borrowed them and took them out to Udari range and shoot the snot out of them. During 05-06' in Iraq recovered and used the FN 50.61 on a few mounted patrols. Last year found this one and used once on patrol in Baghdad.

Just remembered that I did a C-130 night combat equipment jump with a FAL during a UW exercise in Ft Bliss in 86'. Great rifles!

This is an IMBEL kit built on an IMBEL gear logo receiver that I did back before the AWB expired. My 'smith cut it to 18" and crowned it at that time - I wanted something shorter than stock, but couldn't find a compliant muzzle device I liked. It has a DSA L1A1-type selector, Penguin buttstock and PG, one of those awful TAPCO handguards and a VOW Para-style rear sight.

ADCO just threaded the barrel and made a custom shouldered threaded adapter this week so I could mount a 5/8"x24RH thread Phantom. They do damn nice work and fast too!

All that's left is to redo/rethink the furniture. The Penguin stuff is the economy version they were selling a number of years ago but is basically solid, so I may just pick up a new US made handguard from DSA and paint the furniture with whatever. I'm thinking either OD or FDE, although something like LaRue's UDE has a lot of appeal, too.

I'd check my sights if my rifle was throwing the rounds so far off to the right like that! :D

Just had to share this one. Good guns, good food.

By the way, my FAL looks like a twin to the one in the above posting.

Yep, building one.

Got the handguard, basic kit should be inbound along with the receiver, lower and barrel. The wood pistol grip and buttstock will have to be US made, I'll cobble something together in the meantime.

I've seem some real mishmash early belgian/israeli FAL's. They must have been shipping whatever was in the parts bins at the time and parts were replaced as needed later on.

Get ahold of Blue Monster on the Fal Files, he made the grip and butt for this one. He makes really fantastic stocks and the Type A fit perfectly.

I've heard of him and might go that route, I think he's backlogged right now due to a move. Ironwood is almost finished with moving and installing some new machinery which is going to make their delivery times very quick.

Where did you get the bayonet? That rifle must be really lightweight.

I'd never seen or heard of this FAL-like rifle that takes AR mags, called an Imbel MD. Can these be purchased in the US? I can't seem to find any on Gunbroker and a Google search wasn't much more helpful. :(

Springfield Armory SAR-4800 in 5.56mm.

They're out there, and will need to be unbanned, since they were imported with a thumbhole stock and a muzzle nut.

The bayonet came from FalFiles member EX1. He comes up with a lot of hard to find parts. He's very knowledgeable and a good guy.
