I am new to the ipod thing, and don't like that itunes is a one way sync to one PC. I'd like to be able to send music from the ipod to my work PC, or buy music/vids on my work PC sync them to the ipod, then have the ipod sync my home PC later.

It seems that if I am using Itunes, this is not really possible. Is there a freeware to $50 solution that is "lights out" for making this a simpler interface and sync task?

Thanks!!

Shivan - I don't have an iPod, but the wife does, and her's syncs with 5 different computers with no problem, I believe this is the max. She has the 2nd to latest little one you can watch movies on, I don't know the name, but it's the really thin one. What model and generation do you have?

Hope this helps.

I have a 3rd gen 32GB Touch. I'm interested to know the details of the setup that allows her to use Itunes to take the data from the Ipod and sends it back to four other PC's.

I don't want to have 5 discrete data dumps on the Ipod, with potential dupes of music or vids, I want to have one set of data that is on both computers.

I'm currently in CA on business but I'll be getting back home tonight. I'll talk to her then and see what I can find out for you. Hopefully some of the Apple experts will join in as well.

That would be great, more info the better. From what I gather here at work, you have to get some 3rd party software to do it, and some works - some doesn't work so well.

Just trying to gather as much info as I can, even if it turns out I use something else.

It does give the basic background to the genesis of my question. Though it misses the mark on how to arrange 2 (or more) PC's so that I can push data from the Ipod to the second computer, then import that data in to Itunes for sync purposes, or alternately bypass Itunes altogether and use the 3rd party software for auto sync of my music and vid library.

The key is being able to take data from the ipod and send it to whatever PC I like, and then use that data on that PC independent, or in concert with, the Ipod/Itunes.

Nope. Key point:

Important: Synchronization generally occurs only in one direction, from your computer to your iPod.

I can plug in an ipod to a PC right now, and manage manually, that's not what I'm looking to do because I can never get the 1100 songs from the Ipod to computer #2 because they were loaded as CD's, WMA's, MP3's, etc and can not flow from Ipod to computer #2, so the only thing I can do within the limitations of Itunes is delete songs from the Ipod, or add new ones.

HOWEVER, if I add a new song at Computer #2 via manual mode, then do an auto sync on Computer #1, that song will be removed because it does not exist in the Itunes library of C#1, and I have no way to get it from the Ipod to the Itunes library on Computer #1. See important key point above.

Yep, now we're getting close, but I'd like to hear about people who use this product and who I can identify as having given good advice in the past. ;)

I was looking at this one: Ipod2Computer (http://www.ipod2computer.com/index.php?SRC=6&gclid=CJuJ6byLyp4CFQk75QodDA0Epw)

Actually if you read it there is a way to use it as a disk as well. Enable that and copy it from PC 1 onto the iPod as a disk file as well. Then on PC 2 import it from that disk and then it will be on both PCs and delete it from the disk portion of the iPod

Shivan - I was incorrect... she has the same problem you do with syncing her songs on the other computers. I do remember something about 5 computers though... I'm an ipod dummy :p

I was having an issue with movies purchased on the iTouch and transfering them to the PC. We are now working with Apple so I asked the rep about this problem, here's his answer:

When you plug the touch into your computer, click on iTunes and then
click on the iTouch on the left hand side under Devices. If you check
"automatically sync when iTouch is connected" the movie should show up
on the device. Also, go to the movies tab at the top of the page and
make sure the "Sync Movies" block is checked at the top of the page.

Something that you may want to think about, get a cheap external hard drive and put your iTunes stuff on it. This will save a lot of space on your computer. With your other computers you can have iTune pull the downloads from the external hard drive by going into the iTunes page on your computer...check out the attached picture.

You ae limited to 5 authorize computers on one account. With an external hard drive life gets very easy.

A disclaimer, we are going to issue out iTouch for culture & language training, that is why I've become knowledgable.

Shivan, I don't know if this provides exactly the functionality you're looking for or how well the product has been maintained over the last couple of years but this used to be a viable opensource alternative option to iTunes.

And while off-topic, a good April Fool's joke from years past of a product that allows transfer of music directly from one ipod to another ;)

Ok, so I found out the hard way that the Touch can not be used as a disk directly without either a jailbreak, or a 3rd party solution.

I downloaded and purchased a license to this product: http://www.ipod2computer.com/

Only to find out that the Touch does not work like the Classic or Nano.

So I found this product:

http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.html

Which handles the two way copy capability I was looking for perfectly. I am testing the sync right now and I think I still need to iron out the duplication of photos and videos from my media folders on Computer #1.

Otherwise it looks like everything except the Genius mixes come over perfectly.
