Hey guys,

I am thinking about picking up another MG. I have a nice M16 and a Mac-10 so I am thinking a STG-44 might be in order. Any tips on how much I should pay? This is a collectible, and is unlikely to be shot more than once or twice.

It looks like it is time to sell off a bunch of crap to fund this!

I just saw one in Roy, Utah at Impact Guns about two weeks ago. Didn't think to check the price tag on it though. I'll check with them when I have some time. It appeared to be in pretty good shape. (didn't get to put my greasy fingers on it though)

Sorry, it's actually an MP43, not a 44.

Be sure you're not looking at a re-weld, there are more than a few out there.

The last one I looked at was about 18-20K, and ammo is a dollar + a round. Good luck!

I saw one for sale at a show here in VA this past Sunday. $21,400 I believe the price was.

Help me out, what is a re-weld? Is that a repaired DEWAT? (Rewat? LOL)

Actually, they are called re-wats.

A re-weld is a repair to a cut or demilled receiver, where the gun was made inoperable through saw cutting or torch cutting the receiver into pieces, and then someone took those pieces and rewelded the receiver together.

The less expensive MP-43/MP-44/StG-44's will sometimes be rewelds, so you need to be able to take a look in person for the weld lines, or have access to some good hi res pics if you're buying remotely.

Market pricing for a decent C&R bring back Sturmgewehr is between $17~$20K, from what I remember. Those prices were pre economic collapse though, and I'm sure there are legitimate deals out there if you look.

Finish can be a nice blue, a grey phosphate ("Parkerized"), or even clear phosphate, which would look unfinished. Or, a mix of all three finishes on the same weapon, which would still be correct.

Here's one that belongs to a member of my club. You can see all the different finishes on the same weapon, but it's original and correct.

Also....check for wear and tear on the barrel....non chromed and all military ammo is/was corrosively primed.

Check the buttstock for cracks. The recoil spring sits in the wooden buttstock, without a metal tube for it to ride in.

Earlier features like a threaded muzzle were generally done away with later in the '44-'45 production guns, but you'll still see them.

Since these were built using parts from different sub contractors, you can see stuff like an early marked (MP-43) gun with late front sights and no threads on the muzzle, or the other way around, a late marked rifle (StG-44) with threads.

No Sturmgewehr ever had a bayonet lug, although the very early/prototype Haenal MKb-42(H) did, but I don't know of any in private hands.

Hope that helps. The Sturmgewehr has always been my at the top of my list of must haves if I ever had the cash.

And a nice pair of gloves, cause they get "toasty."

Honestly, if all you have is a 16 and a MAC there are lots of NFAs I'd grab before a Stg45. The only reason to have one is if you are specifically collecting WWII stuff. Ammo, mags and parts are rare. It's not really a performer, and if you do have one that is pristine enough to still shoot well...it's really too rare to shoot it a lot.

For the same money I'd rather have a AKM, G3 or MP5.
