All right fellas, I need some opinions from you guys. I'm in the market for a new pistol. I want a full size 9mm, that is ready to shoot out the box. This gun is going to be a shooter, and I plan on putting many rounds through it. I also plan on shooting competition with this pistol. (uspsa, steel, IDPA, etc...)

I'd rather have an all steel pistol, but I'm open to polymer. The main thing is a want this gun to be ready out the box with a nice trigger.

I've really been eyeing a new Sig P226, but all the horror stories I've been hearing about the newer models, have me thinking twice. I also like the CZ sp101, but dont know much about it. I already own a customed 1911, so they are not a option.

My budget is around $800

Thanks in advance guys

What about a G17 and use the extra $300 for Warren Tactical sights, a holster extra mags and some ammo?

I thought about this. I already have a G19, but I would consider a G34.

Do you know if Sig is taking care of these QC problems on a 'case by case' basis?

To keep cross use of some gear I'd go for the G34. I like mine :)

I think if I were going to compete with a 9mm it would either be a 1911 or a G34. Since you don't want the 1911 for this one, I would pick a G34 with a 3.5, a standard spring and sites of your choice, then call it good.

G34s are hot and I'm getting one as soon as I see what the 4th gens are like.

I can't tell you anything about Sigs, sorry, I only know about Glocks.

For an all steel gun, I would either get a Browning Hi Power MK III or a CZ-75B or SP-01. For a Polymer, I would go with a S&W MP or MP Pro. A Glock 34 would also work well.

Was going to recommend the M&P pro but if you already have a glock go with the g34. In its respective shooting classes it is more than competent and at a price point that makes everything else seem silly. BTW I did own an SP-01 and while it was a great gun the factory trigger left much to be desired. If you went that route you pretty much would need to buy a SHADOW or have trigger work done to it to get it anywhere near what a stock g34 can do IMHO.

Take a look at a Sig Pro 2022. They can be had for under $500 and come standard w/ night sights. Take the $300 and invest in ammo or a training class.

Beretta 92 FS; they can be had for around $500 are are great pistols.

Does the Shadow have the trigger work come with the gun standard?

The shadow does not have a firing pin safty which makes the trigger better; however, it does not come with the competition hammer. If you want to go that way go to ghostholster.com and exchanges some emails with angus he is one of the CZ sponsored shooters and will set you up(I personally have no experience with him but he has a good name in the business). But I must say as loudly and annoyingly as possible. YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH A $600 GLOCK 34 or M&P PRO. The money you save is worth it, and I cant think of a single person who has ever said "My G34 is holding me back in production/stock service pistol".

"Horror stories"?

I'll be the first to admit SIGs aren't quite as nice as they used to be, but they're still very reliable and functional pistols. If they appeal to you, go for it!

glock for poly, sig for metal.

i'd say an HK p7 psp, but not really a good gun for competition, due to expensive mags, euro mag release, and heat issues :o

For competition I would either go with a G34 or M&P 9L or 9 Pro.

for large frame 9mm, I have standardize on large frame Glocks, I have 2 G17's 3rd gen and RTF plus a G34. I like the G17's for IDPA and play - I like the barrel length for draw and transition. I use the G34 for USPSA Production - I like the longer sight radius for the field stages - easier to make quick long shots with only a sligth draw/trnsition penalty. I had on G34 that had over 120000 rounds before the slide cracked. Glock replaced it free. The current G34 has about 25000 thru it and the G17 3rd Gen has about 18000 thru it. The RTF only has about 5000 rds - it's new this year.
They take a beating and are a BEST BUY in my opinion.

In my first reply, I didn't see you already own a Glock 19. Knowing that and as long as you like the platform, I would just do the Glock 34 and call it a day.

I have a four P226's and they are excellent weapons. I don't have any recent ones. But the ones I have shoot well, feel great and always work.

I'm a happy camper. Would you mind buying a used Sig? There are plenty out there.

I would recommend going with either a Glock G17 or G34. For sights, I'd recommend going with either Trijicons (available as OEM sights from Glock, at a very reasonable price), or a set of Warren Tactical or Warren/Sevigney sights.

See if you qualify for the Glock Homeland Defender program-it gets you the gun at an excellent price, and with 3 instead of 2 magazines. Alternatively, you can join GSSF for $35, and get the gun for the same price (albeit with 2 instead of 3 magazines).

Particularly for IDPA, I think that there are some real advantages to be derived by going with a Glock or M&P, as you're essentially getting a consistant single-action triggerpull for each shot.

Alternatively, you might want to consider a SIG-Sauer P229 with the DAK trigger, or an HK 2000 or P30 with their LEM trigger; both are a light, consistant DAO trigger set-up.

Best, Jon

Make sure I understand the premiss of the OP:

You have a G19.
You want a pistol suitable for USPSA/IDPA competition.
You have ~$800.

I'm also making some assumptions:

You like the G19 and shoot it at least passably well.
You already have holsters, mag pouches, and other accessories for the G19.

If those assumptions are correct, my advice would be buy another G19 so you've got a backup, and use the G19 as your competition gun. Take all the extra money you've saved and spend it getting both guns set up with better sights then stock up on ammo so you can practice more (and/or take a class).

Alternatively, you could get a G17 or G34 and still have the same manual of arms, use the same mag pouches, and have one-way (G17/G34 to G19) mag compatibility. But in my experience, most people don't actually perform in a measurably better way with the longer slide guns.

Todd's suggestion makes a ton of sense. I'll add that I've seen a lot of guys at Blackwater matches kick ass with G19s against longer slide G34s and other high end guns.

......my advice would be.......use the G19 as your competition gun.......

I used mostly a G19 in IDPA for the past 3 years, but now feel the need for a change to full-size/all-steel......

For an all steel gun, I would either get a ....... CZ-75B ........

.......so I am now planning to make this my IDPA gun for 2010: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=42804

CZ 75B

Just love that pistol. Sigs are overpriced imo. Would rather have a new CZ or an M&P Pro in 9mm.

Gen 4 G17 if you need to buy a new blaster, otherwise just shoot your G19. The G19 is the most popular Glock for a reason. That being said, I have a STI 9mm single stack that has been very reliable, runs like a timex with springfield 9 round mags.
