I have a carbine length gas system with a fixed front sight post. I was considering shaving down the front sight post into a low profile gas block and then installing a DD omega rail over the top. I have two questions.
1: will the DD Omega rail work with a cut down FSB?
2: Do I need the 9" (mid length) or the 12" (rifle length) to cover the FSB?

1. Yes.
2. 9.0 will cover most of it, but a 10" is more ideal.

They also make a carbine length one at 7" if you do not want to cut down the front sight. I just put one on last night. Took 10 minutes.
Looks like a lot of shaving is required, but the results should be great!

Yep. I sent mine to ADCO and they had it back to me in 3-4 days and I put a 13" LaRue on mine for my go-go-gadget arms and to mount an X300 at 12 o'clock.

Very cool. I will have to do mine with the FSB on the barrel, as my barrel is a 14.5" with perm. attached YHM break. From looking, it appears DD only makes 7", 9" and 12", so I will probably have to go the 12" route.
The whole reason for doing this, is that my FSB is not "F" marked even though it is a Colt M-4 barrel. I got an old barrel (in perfect condition) and I assume it came off an older M-4 with A2 upper. I ordered a .04" taller front sight post, but if I have troubles getting a zero with the Colt carry handle or BUIS when I get an Aimpoint, I will go with this rail system and attach folding sights. Not really a big issue, as I got this all Colt parts upper for extremely cheap as a project. I'll bet the taller front sight post will be fine and this won't even be an issue.
