I looked around here and couldn't find a duplicate of this thread.

So I'm looking for the best overall single pistol mag carrier for a doublestack 9mm, in IWB.

What are your experiences?

That thread is pretty old.... from 2005.

Personally, I find a fairly wide, flat gun jammed in my pants uncomfortable enough on its own, and I don't particularly like the idea of having another square item wedged between me and my pants. I remember asking about IWB mag holders on here a couple years ago and got a nearly unanimous "yuck".

That said, after my experience with a Raven (http://www.themalabarfront.com/) phantom holster, if I wanted to try an IWB mag holder I might consider one of their holders with IWB loops added. The contour they use is pretty comfortable.

I find my MTac to be fairly comfortable, with its wide expanse of leather offering a comfortable package overall.

I'm not so sure about those Kydex Raven single mag carriers. I've heard good about Don Hume. Do most people here carry OWB mag pouches?

Which gun is it for?

Go OWB, but if you must try IWB you can pick up the Raven carriers & IWB mounts so you can try them both ways.

It's for a Sig P228 9mm.

This thread (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=28739) offers some ideas, but as with most concealed carry gear you'll get a variety of reports from just about everyone.

I did similar research looking for the best holster, since money is tight I can't afford to buy cheap and buy twice.

I also need a good solid pistol dress belt.

Milt Sparks makes the best leather IMHO, there are other fine leather gurus. I have carried IWB with double stack mags (P-35) and to me it is miserable because so much pressure is concentrated in such a narrow place. It doesn't bother near as much with a 1911 mag. I carry OWB for mags & IWB mostly for pistol. I actually could not see any reason to carry IWB for mags unless I was in full ninja mode.;)

Thanks for the tip.

In my research, the Milt Sparks VM2 and MTac kept coming up, so I picked one and happy with it. I'll check out their OWB mag pouches.

I'm looking at their S4C and #17 products. In particular, does Kydex respond better to abuse (like a match) than leather while still retaining retention?

These look similar to the Raven Concealment (http://www.comp-tac.com/product_info.php?products_id=28&osCsid=spgdfsmrdaecs45tv1iiebhe13) single mag carriers.

The belt will aid in retention in the case of leather IWB carriers.

As far as OWB goes, many of the kydex mag carriers offer adjustable retention, while most leather does not. The leather ones eventually stretch, but unless you're going to hang upside down ( or jump, crawl, etc.) the mag is not going to fall out easily.

I tried an IWB carrier, and did not like it. You can carry an OWB one with a snap cover, and no one will give it a second look. It looks just like a multitool-cellphone-flashlight carrier that people see everyday.
