View Full Version : Swapping Rails on my Colt: YHM for Troy?

I own a Colt 6920 with a carbine length YHM FF rail system and a YHM flip-up FSB/gas block. I've been thinking about swapping this set-up for a Troy TRX Extreme Battle Rail in either 9" or 11" over a low profile gas block. After Christmas I might actually be able to afford it. What do you guys think? Do you like the Troy rail system better than the YHM? Is it worth switching?

I went from a YHM Spectre length lightweight to a 13" TRX Extreme on my 9mm. I'm happy with the change - the YHM was just too chubby for my tastes.

I like the YHM only because I have big hands and they fit me better than others I have tried
But Troy is way better quality

How sturdy are the detachable rail sections on the TRX Extreme?

Very. They have locating nubs on the back and lock up tight.

Do you have to remove the forend to add the rail sections, if the forend is already mounted sans rail sections?

Thanks,

Pete

Good question. I hadn't thought of that...

If you can figure a way of fishing the backing plate down the pipe while you mount the rail, I suppose you can get by without unmounting it. Muzzle end rails should be no problem.

You might consider this - a full Daniel Defense rail fir the cost of a TROY TRX. Plus you don't have to buy a LP gas block or aftermarket front sight.

You can mount them anywhere you want without removing the rail. It does take some thought and effort, but its not all that difficult.

That's a great idea. I appreciate it. The reason I want to go ahead and swap out gas blocks, too is because my current gas block is held in place by allen screws. I am under the impression that a pinned gas block is far more reliable. Is that true?

Yep a pinned gas block is much better. In fact I really don't like the YHM design in particular since it's not even a clamp/compression screw design.

There are some excellent choices in flip up front sight gas blocks if you still want that. This one from wilson combat seems like an excellent value at $146. VLTOr also has a god design byt more expensive. Your gunsmith can pin it.

By the way the Troy TRX Extreme is a great in its own right. You can also choose the Troy TRX extreme as marketed by Viking Tactics, it has oval cutouts instead of the circles for a different look.

The look of a mid-length or specter-length rail over a low-pro gas block has really grown on me, plus the low-pro gas blocks seem to be pretty inexpensive. What do you think of the Troy low-pro gas block?

If I get this done I'm planning on selling all the YHM gear and using the money to buy, among other things, some Magpul MOE BUIS's.

That's a good GB and your smith can pin it for you too. I'd say you're good with the TROY or VTAC TRX extreme and that GB. Maybe get the magpul MBUS as low cost buis.
