Any idea what temperature a carrier can be subjected to without ruining it? Does anyone know what temperature it can reach during operation?

I ask because I have an opportunity to purchase a good carrier on the cheap -the only thing is it was treated with mil-tec at one point in time and in this case it was baked in the oven at 400 degrees for some time and I don't want to buy a carrier that might fail prematurely.

While I don't have the phase diagram for the steel(4140?) that a bolt carrier is made from, I would say that 400 deg F is probably not enough to affect the grain structure in an appreciable way i.e. it's probably fine.

If it really concerns you, I'd just get a new one.

That's what I figured but I'm no metallurgist so I thought I would ask.

I'm getting the carrier for a case of beer so I really can't lose. It's more of a matter of curiosity at this point.

Thanks for the post.
