Disturbing Image In Music Video: American Flag Upside down and Backward Hung From Wall

I recently saw a music video for the song Tic Tok by the artist Kesha. From minute
3:00 and on in the video there is an American flag hung upside down and backward
on the back wall of the room that they are in. How has no one noticed or said
anything about this? This is absolutely unacceptable. If an artist was to burn
American flags, it would be all over the news, why has this not been brought up? It
is possible that this has simply not been brought to anyone's attention, so here is a
link to the video on YouTube. Now remember, this video is playing on popular TV
music networks. Let me know what you think!

Well an upside down flag means we are in distress. Perhaps the art department was making a statement that our country is in distress. .....oooor like the rest of Hollywood and this FN state of CA they are showing blatant disrespect. I'm just down the street...I'll handle this!

Kinda what I was thinking. Freedom of speech and broadcasting their thoughts, opinions and ideas.

The good thing about Hollywood is that they will speak out on what they think is truth in their eyes. They obviously did it on purpose, so I'll contact the producers and see if they will reply on WTF they meant by it.

Very true and good idea.

Just for the hell of it I watched the video... the flag is shown less than 1/2 a second total through the video and is in the midst of a punk rock/dance party where it actually kind of "fits in" with their theme or "artistic vision" for lack of a better description.

I never would've heard of it and if other people are talking about it or promoting this video in the same way obviously the creator of it did their job. They created a tiny bit of controversy and we're viewing the video & talking about it which will increase it's popularity and sales.

We are in luck. The video was made by RCA/JIVE Label Group, a unit of Sony Music Entertainment. I know people. Lets see what they can dig up for us before someone like me gets all fired up over nothing.

It falls into accountability. Its not hard for them to say "yes we did it for this reason...."

Granted yes it isn't there for very long. I have to admit I love this song because it reminds me of how me and one of my friends use to be back in the good ol' trouble making days! I have watched this over and over countless times and never noticed the flag.

Of course when you bring things like this up and it goes public you not only stir up anger in those who serve this country and defend that flag, but you also bring to light the negative side of what it could be and run the risk of copy-catters. I would snipe teenage boys who would pull this display in disrespect to all we have fought for.

Yeah I was watching the vid w/ my girlfriend and it stood out to me... I had to show her three times where it was... maybe its just me?

Notice they flash a lot of things.

When she is riding the bike at 0:56 they flash the American flag and then the sign Money.

Dude in the car is wearing an American Flag on his fanny pack 1:28

There is an American Flag wrapped around her left wrist at 2:36

The flag is draped over her in the bathtub at the end 3:29

The very end shot is of her right foot wrapped in another American flag

So obviously they have something to say!

I agree with you to a certain extent and I'm not just being a devil's advocate with what I'm posting. Just so you know my perspective, I'm a disabled veteran, so I understand the WTF when you initially see something like that. On the other hand that's what you sign up for is to protect the rights of American's freedoms, whether you like their actions or not.

Incidentally an upside flag is a sign of distress. Is our country in distress? I would say so.

An interesting story here involving a vet and and an upside down flag he was flying not so long ago http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2009/07/11-0.

Upside Down Flag Has Vet in Fight for 1st Amendment Rights
Dispute Over Flag Protest Erupts in Wisc. Village
by Robert Imrie

WAUSAU, Wis. - An American flag flown upside down as a protest in a northern Wisconsin village was seized by police before a Fourth of July parade and the businessman who flew it - an Iraq war veteran - claims the officers trespassed and stole his property.

This photo provided by Susan Willems taken July 5, 2009 shows an American flag being flown upside down, a day after it was removed by local police, in Crivitz, Wis. The flag being flown upside down as a protest in a small northern Wisconsin village was seized by police before a Fourth of July parade. The businessman flying the flag claims police trespassed and stole his property. (AP Photo/Susan Willems)A day after the parade, police returned the flag and the man's protest - over a liquor license - continued.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin is considering legal action against the village of Crivitz for violating Vito Congine Jr.'s' First Amendment rights, Executive Director Chris Ahmuty said.

"It is not often that you see something this blatant," Ahmuty said.

In mid-June, Congine, 46, began flying the flag upside down - an accepted way to signal distress - outside the restaurant he wants to open in Crivitz, a village of about 1,000 people some 65 miles north of Green Bay.

He said his distress is likely bankruptcy because the village board refused to grant him a liquor license after he spent nearly $200,000 to buy and remodel a downtown building for an Italian supper club.

Congine's upside-down-flag represents distress to him; to others in town, it represents disrespect of the flag.

Hours before a Fourth of July parade, four police officers went to Congine's property and removed the flag under the advice of Marinette County District Attorney Allen Brey.

Neighbor Steven Klein watched in disbelief.

"I said, 'What are you doing?' Klein said. "They said, 'It is none of your business.'"

The next day, police returned the flag.

Brey declined comment Friday.

Marinette County Sheriff Jim Kanikula said it was not illegal to fly the flag upside down but people were upset and it was the Fourth of July.

"It is illegal to cause a disruption," he said.

The parade went on without any problems, Kanikula said.

Village President John Deschane, 60, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam, said many people in town believe it's disrespectful to fly the flag upside down.

"If he wants to protest, let him protest but find a different way to do it," Deschane said.

Congine, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq in 2004, said he intends to keep flying the flag upside down.

"It is pretty bad when I go and fight a tyrannical government somewhere else," Congine said, "and then I come home to find it right here at my front door."

Just watched the video............pretty self explanatory. Just a bunch of kids having a good time. The upside down flag doesn't mean the same to them, just like other things that we might take seriously, they blow off.

All I can say is 'just kids'. Doesn't make it right, just don't get your hair up about it.:D

Yep. They are free men and free to think as they like. We certainly have bigger issues than this to worry about. Don't like it, don't watch it.

It's pretty sad that I have to hear this ****ing idiotic song at work all the time, then I have to come on here and see a thread about it. Who cares?

Don't feel bad, I only recognized the song after I clicked the link and heard a few seconds of it.

I love when people say they don't care about something, yet feel the need to post a comment saying they don't care. :p

Its nothing to get all bent out of shape about of course. I'm just curious now. I like to solve clues...blame my many years of watching Inspector Gadget as a kid! YES I liked to pretend I was Penny, had an imaginary dog and a book and watch I would talk to.

If you want to hear/read the outcome later I'll be on the toilet googling. Contact me via email.

The point I'm making is not that I don't care, which I don't, but that its sad that we're talking about it here.
