View Full Version : AK single point sling mount
I would like to see how some of you mounted single point slings on AKs...
Ex-SEAL instructor at my shooting facility used 550 cord wrapped around the stock I think.

Full stocks are a little tricky, Spec-Ops Brand made one that synched around the butt stock where it meets the receiver, though that particular model has since been discontinued. If the rifle in question has a side or under folder then you can simply affix any sling attachment to the loop located on the applicable mechanism.
What kind of stock are you using on the AK?

Also, what barrel length AK?
Tapco stock (non m4 type), 16" barrel. My Norinco..http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e187/Hypercomp01/CIMG3854.jpg

This:

Plus an applicable sling from the same manufacturer found here:

Should do the trick. There are several slings in the second link that will work.

What buckshot1220 recommended sounds good. I would ask you why you have decided upon a single point sling in this instance?
If you were shooting a Krink then the one point might be a good idea, but I would *strongly* recommend some type of two-point sling with a full-size AK.

Katar has a very good point. I just threw out propective setup, but in all actuality my AK's wear 2pt slings. I use this "custom" one from gandrtactical.com

It is a Blue Force Gear Vickers Padded Combat Applications sling w/ a mash hook front attachment sewn in and the rear attach method shown in my first link. They work great.
Yeah, you can see know the simple two point I have on it. I was thinking about maybe trying a sinlge but I havent made up my mind yet for the same reasons you guys said. Well see, I was thinking about replacing one of the rivets with an HK style eyelet on the left side.....

Specter Gear makes mulitple sling types for both fixed AK stocks and folders. I run their #118 on my SAR-1. Take a look at their site for some ideas and see if they have somthing that will work for you.
Here is what I came up with in Afghanistan.
Remove grip and create a small notch.

Take a piece of 550 cord and tie a simple knot in it creating a loop.

Place the knotted portion in the recess in the grip.

Reinstall grip and attach single point sling to the loop.

I have used a couple of heavy duty cable ties (zip ties, whatever) to make an improvised loop around the small part of the stock to hook a single point into. This was on a fixed stock stamped receiver AK.
It isn't pretty, but it works in a pinch.

I see you have one of Gio's stock adaptors on your AMD.
Sure do. I am the guy who gave him the idea and the field testing data that lead to the current version.
All AMD's should have one.
While I invariably recommend an advanced two-point sling like a VTAC or a VCAS unless it's for a strictly CQB rifle, I've had luck with the following method of attaching a single point:
Get one of these:
http://www.operationparts.com/Yhm_Yankee_Hill_Machine_Bipod_Sling_Swivel_Stud_p/yhm-262.htm
(or similar)
Drill a hole in the side of your stock (assuming wood) right behind the receiver. Drop a couple broken toothpicks coated with wood glue into the hole, screw in the stud. Attach the sling: done.
For mounting a 2-point sling, I like to use the factory front (a VTAC will fit in there, I promise) and simply unscrew the stock rear attachment and stick it on the side of the rear (ensuring not to attach the point through the cleaning kit hole). Works well.
On my underfolder, I just use the left side rear sling loop at the rear trunion.

While we are on the topic...
I have the EMDOM gunslinger on my SAR-1 and love it, it rapidly adjusts much like the BFG VCAS but it also configures from a two point to a single point like the MD MS2....best of both worlds.
In a pinch, you can use an issued sling and turn it into a single point.
The Venezuelans are big on that with their shiny new AK-103's.
Like Dave, I'm a big proponent of a modern adjustable two point (VCAS), but you run whatcha got.
And yes, I'm aware that El Jeffe there has it mounted over the wrong shoulder.......

I love the broad camo stripes on the forearms, it compliments the target indicator red beret very well. :D

I've done that with my underfolder, actually. I found it more useful than the simple two-point strap setup. It's not as good as a proper VCAS, but it'll work in a pinch.

Invariably I have to hook at least one person up with this per course.
Generally, I keep the sling attached at the standard rear point, attach a length of 550 cord to the front point of the sling, and then attach that to the sling. Obviously it takes a little bit of experimenting to determine what length of paracord gets attached. What's usually best is to double up the paracord and leave some excess if it needs to be expanded later in class. Not the best option by any means but it works in a pinch.
For AR's, I do something similar but I attach the front of the sling to the FSB via a length of paracord. Works well (but once again, not ideal).

I made this metal plate for my AMD. I have been to chicken to drill on the receiver so I tried this. I had the 550 cord trick pictured above when I had plastic grips and it worked great. When I got the wood grips I did not want to cut into the metal above them so I came up with this. It can be flipped so it can work on either side and doesn't rub the base of my thumb when firing. Hahahahah... You just created something that's been in my head for over a year! I was even thinking about it when I opened this thread.
That's BRILLIANT!
(Now make a whole bunch and sell them cheap)
