Too bad that damn Russian wood costs so much.
One can always get a very similar product by acquiring an unfinished set from Ironwood Designs (http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/2aprod/1zAKproduct.html) and then sending them off to Z_recto (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v43/cmepw/AK74/) for refinishing.
A winning combo!
Very true.....that Russian laminate is probably the most expensive plywood on earth.....
Both Ironwood and Z-Recto do outstanding work.
I don't know about dinger but that has definitely given me a few ideas!!!

Keep the 106 AK-100 pattern.
If you want to trick one out like that, get a 105.
I wish Ironwood could cut the front handguards to AK-74 pattern. All I have seen on his site are AKM pattern.
Dinger's been making noises about wanting an AKS-74 clone forever......but he won't take the plunge and get a 5.45mm rifle......so I'm trying to help a brother out.........
What he really needs to do is as you said....get a SLR-105A1 or a high quality Bulgarian AKS-74 kit and a DCI receiver and get it built.

That's exactly what I want to do! That way it will compliment my SLR-105A1 and I can use all the same ammo and magazines.
Why a DCI receiver over a NoDak Spud?
DCI = NODAK
Dan Coonan Industries is sold through NODAK. :D
That is exactly what I want in 5.45.
I'm man enough to step away from the 7.62 and .223... :p

Ah well that makes things much easier! Now If I could find a new Bulgarian AKS-74 kit I'd be all set.

Ohio Rapid Fire has them, cut up Bulgarian military reserve rifles that weren't issued. I believe they're $400.00.
Wow, that is one great looking AK.
I love it.
I don't think anything looks as nice as Russian wood furniture.
ORF has 4 kits at 300, 350, 400 and 430. it looks like the 350 and 430 have smooth non rolled edge early style stocks and 3 less mags.
Are those stocks that much better or is it something else?

I would call and talk to them instead of using the web site. I ordered a kit on Thursday and the available inventory doesn't match the web site. Hand-picked kits are gone.
Just FYI.

I think I am going to have to pick up one of those kits from ORF. Everyone needs a dart gun. :D
Templar, are the kits drying up? I noticed K-Var doesn't have any AKS kits listed.

They can't last forever......if you want one I wouldn't doddle......

Does ORF have Bulgarian kits? I can't tell from their website.

Yup, click on "shop at" and then "AK Parts".

I did but I didn't see where they specifically state they are Bulgarian kits. Maybe I missed it...

Just checked, and no, they aren't marked as such but they are indeed Bulgarian.

The ones further down are labeled as Bulgarian. What condition can I expect out of the $299-349 kits?
I'd give them a call, and see what they can do for you. I'd be primarily concerned with bore condition.
