I know I want a fullsize semi-auto. I can't decide if I should go 9mm or .40 S&W.

Here's what is on my list. I am planning on buying used.

Glock 17, Glock 19 (I know it's "compact"), Glock 22, S&W M&P fullsize, Sig P226/229.

Here is what I already have:

M&P40C
XD9SC
XD9 Service (May sell. Still unsure if I'd like a Sig more, get another fullsize M&P or if I'd be happiest w/the XD.)
RIA 1911 .45
Glock 23
CZ 75B (SPF)

I suggest you get the G19. I think everyone should have one and you can find one used easily.

Glock 19 and concentrate on only shooting one platform.

+3 for a G19

Trade the XDs to fund an M&P FS M&P9 and or G19. I had quite the conglomeration of handguns as well, but traded them all in for the M&P platforms. Same controls, modular backstraps, same manual of arms, same muscle memory.

I concur, simplify and work on increasing your proficiency with one platform.

Since you said you want a full size pistol, I would suggest the 34 or 35 depending on what caliber you want. They balance well, already have a "-" connector (good unless you want standard), and have a longer sight radius tahn the 17 or 22. I have both and they are my preferrd Glocks for other than carry.

Flogging that horse one more time..... ;)

An additional advantage of the G-17 or G-19 is the ease of maintenance. You can learn to work on one yourself, if you download an armorer's manual, and have a simple punch.

I would get the S&W M&P PT Edition 9mm pistol from "G&R Tactical". With the right ammo 9mm is all you need IMHO.

That's quite a mix of a collection. I'd get rid of everything that isn't a Glock or M&P, and use it to fund buying a Glock or M&P and plenty of ammo.

How does the pull weight of the Sig P229/226 compare to the pull weight of the CZ 75B?

G17. If you are buying a combat pistol you might as well get the one that the others are measured against.

Since you already have a wide mix of handgun types and calibers, I'm going to go against the grain here and recommend the .40 in either the M&P or P229.

I'm one of those rare shooters that likes the .40. It makes for a nice middle ground in between the 9mm and .45acp, it is the best overall performer in FBI protocols in both regular JHP and bonded loads, and it is VERY available. You can pretty much get any defensive ammunition that you want on the open market right now for the .40, but the selection is slim pickings for the more civilian popular 9mm and .45acp. The .40 is probably the dominant law enforcement caliber right now, so it is well supported by the market and defensive ammunition manufacturers.

The M&P .40 is fast becoming one of the best .40S&W pistols on the market. Reliable, durable, and well made. The Sig P229 has been a well designed and respected .40S&W pistol since it first hit the market in 1992. The M&P is more ergonomic, but the P229 has a better trigger(if you like DA/SA) and is a little more accurate.

Although Mids I'd recommend the HK USPc or the P2000.

I totally agree and I am also a .40 lover! I would opt for a P229R in .40 S&W, of course.

And you need more?

If you're buying for the joy of a collection, hey, more power to you. But from a functional/practical standpoint, you've already got more handguns than you know what to do with.

There is no such thing as too many handguns
Do what I do and buy every pistol that strikes your fancy.
and then if you find one you really like buy a few more of them.

I think everyone should own a selection of service pistols including
Glock 19 & 17
Beretta 92
M&P full size, Pro & mid size .45
Sig 226, 220
and of course a few 1911's

I haven't any problems either but I tried the Glock platform again, bought a 17 and dumped my XD anyways, planning on picking up a 19 and 26 and stick with one platform and practice, practice, practice. While it's nice to have a collection, being proficient with more than one platform is good too, that's not the direction I want to go in. I can collect when I'm older.

i'm a pro-gun mutha****a. buy guns, lots of guns, and shoot them more. there is, however, such a thing as spending more energy on buying handguns than learning to master them. because this is such a common theme, i and some others here are trying to emphasize the importance. since just about everything we do here at M4C is with the direct intended result of improving our chances of surviving gun-battles, and owning a bunch of guns for no better reason to own them not only doesn't achieve that, but actually hinders it, you're not likely to find too many guys jumping on board to offer suggestions of what next unnecessarily firearm to add to a large, miscellaneous collection. or maybe you will, but you'll still get just as much critical attention (not necessarily "criticism").

not trying to be snobby, just es'plaining a perspective.

This is what sets M4C apart.

On any other board, 50% of the respondents would suggest their own pet gun regardless of whether it was on the OP's list, and the other 50% would post "get them all".

While I certainly don't have a shortage of handguns, I have come to realize that to really excel it's better to choose one platform and really concentrate (train, practice, compete, carry) with said platform to near exclusivity. What I've chosen to do is split my year into "thirds", spending 1/3 with Glock, 1/3 with 1911, and 1/3 with others.

Given having to make an irrevocable choice, I'd choose the Glock platform over the others-and if it had to be a single gun, it would be between my G17 and G19.

Best, Jon
