W-748 has been an excellent powder for my Winchester 64gr Power Point load, but I'm almost out of W748 - and what little I have is pretty old. I've pulled the 1050 out of the closet to work up a good load for a new 16" Noveske upper - hopefully using components on hand. Best accuracy is a prime consideration.

I see in another thread that Varget is one of the preferred powders for the heavier (75gr) bullets. I have two kegs of Varget on hand, (but no 75s). I do have a good supply of the WW 64's as well as Fed 205 primers..

Does anyone have an accurate Varget load (including COL) for the 64 WW they would share for a base starting point?
If Varget is not the best choice, I would appreciate hearing that as well.

Thanks.

I would start at 24 or 25 grs. Varget and probably end up at 26. What amount of 748 did you use? I have run 26 grs. 748 under those 64 grainers with good results. Velocity was about 2700 ft/sec. from a 16" Colt barrel.

JStor,

Thanks for the information.

My W748/64gr WW load is 25.1 grains in a LC case with a Fed 205 and COL of ~2.222".

Some very old load notes, (but at 24.6 grains) show it chronographed at 2,725 fps - "probably" in a 16" Dissipator; but the notes don't show which gun I was using. I was shooting 3-Gun with both a 20" Colt and the 16" at the time.

Another very accurate bullet/load is the 60 grain V-Max with 26 grains 748. I'd use a duplicate charge of Varget for that, also.

Though it may vary from rifle to rifle, the Varget I use in .308 loads seemed to have better uniformity with CCI primers over Federal Match primers. In a small case like the .223 it probably doesn't matter very much.

I loaded up 50 of my "old W748 load" with the 64 WWs and then 30 with 25.5 grains of Varget. [I did my usual review and interpolation of available data -though none is available specifically for the 64WW, and determined that 25.5 "should" be safe in a NATO chamber.]

The new 16" N4 upper should be here Monday - I should be able to do some sight-in and comparisons soon after. And maybe a group or two with the 20" gun before to set a baseline.

My Varget is on hand for the .308 guns as well. It's been a good powder for the 26" bolt gun with US commercial brass and Federal Match primers and also with the FALs using Aussie AFF91 brass and CCI 34s. I was able to get a close duplication of the excellent Aussie F4 Ball load using Varget, but I have quite a bit of the Aussie surplus on hand.
