Wow! My head is still spinning from all the info that was presented in "Fighting Pistol" and "Advanced Fighting Pistol". These were each 2-day courses taught back to back by James Yeager March 15-18 at Brady, Tx. We got so much information and skills crammed into us that the best way I can think of to describe it is getting a drink of water from a fire hose.
How can I describe what we learned? Maybe a brief list is the best way to start:
Fighting Pistol
- Safety lecture
- "dot drills" with DEA dot targets, working on drawstroke, trigger reset, front sight focus, and shrinking groups
- 2-handed shooting, strong hand only, weak hand only
- ALWAYS moving, ALWAYS scanning 360 degrees, ALWAYS topping off the pistol before holstering
- Speed reloads, emergency reloads, tactical reloads
- Type 1, 2, and 3 malfunction clearance drills (a lot of them) 2-handed, strong hand only, and weak hand only
- Shooting on the move - forward, backward, left, right
- Shooting on the move while being pushed/pulled forward, backward, left, right
- Moving to and using cover effectively
- supine, fetal position (left & right sides)...
- MINDSET, DEADLY FORCE, and LEGAL lectures (these alone were worth the price of admission)
- LOW LIGHT, HOME DEFENSE, VEHICLE DEFENSE and GUNSHOT WOUND TREATMENT lectures
- dot drills with DEA dots, and 1" paste-on dots
- shooters being beaten with boxing gloves
- beating on a heavy bag and then shooting
- team tactics
- and a bunch of other stuff you'll have to take the classes to find out about...
What else can I say? The main thing I would want to convey is that these classes are a lot more than shooting. They are about FIGHTING, and fighting hard. All the students were leaps and bounds ahead of where we were on day one, both in skills and mindset. Transformed might be the right word.
I guess I drank the cool-aide.
