So, our Team decides to go for Pizza instead of the dining facility. Just as we finished up the meal, we hear this woosh sound and immediately dive on the ground, while the soldiers around us look confused. They obviously didn't recognize the sound of an incoming rocket. Anyhow, it was a dud and we could see the impact zone about 75 meters away.

We run into the dining facility since it has this uber high tech multimillion dollar roof. Nobody inside had a clue what just happened. 10 minutes later, the "big voice" comes on and announces that we have "incoming" and pandemonium breaks out. People (mostly female I hope) were actually screaming as they ran FROM the facility to get in the concrete bunkers. We tried to tell them they were safer in here, but the "herd mentality" had already set in.

I look around to make sure nobody left any weapons behind and decided to return to my room. A little while later we hear a boom. Maybe another rocket, or maybe EOD earning their money.

It has been over three hours and no all clear given, and the folks are still stuck in the bunkers. This has to be the worse IDF drills I have ever seen from a unit.

The good news is that the internet is faster since everyone else is offline :).

Oh well.... Happy New Year from Iraq!

The Green Bean guys were in the bunkers. I was hoping to find a few PEQ 15s or other kit laying on the ground, but no such luck.

The rocket probably was fired unconventionally, i.e. from the back of a truck, and didn't break the minimum altitude to set off the warning system, or it was fired from outside the AOS for any of the radars on the camp if there were any.

You should see the funny shit that ensues when a freezer door slams and someone runs out to the bunker thinking it's an IDF attack or you have outgoing 155mm and people clear out of their buildings and run to bunkers.

Anyway, happy new year. Hope you make it back safe.

Happy New Years!!! Be safe over there.

Your post brings back memories. I can't tell you how many mornings I woke up to "all clear blaring out of the loud speakers". I never did hear an incoming warning.

im glad no one was hurt also. while in iraq, i got to see some of that as well. its kind of funny actually. everyone runs around like a chicken minus a head for a while. then they relax and carry-on with what they were doing. this one army guy left his rifle in the chow hall once. i remember thinking, "oh man, he may have to throw rocks at the enemy."

Are you over at Liberty? I was heading from out MSS to Northend Pizza one day when someone decided to lob a couple at Victory. Believe they actually hit some pods or chow hall or something, but recall there were some foreign nationals killed. Pure chaos over at Liberty.

In our AO they shoot them off of angle iron. The bipod length is predetermined based on the grid they shoot them from. That way, they can pay some idiot to set the rocket up. Much safer for the smart guys.

The thing about last night is that it not only showed a lack of planning, but a lack of mindset. Don't get me wrong, I do respect the hell out of IDF. I have gone through hundreds of attacks, most notably the "Mahdi March Madness" of 2008 in Baghdad. I haven't seen a lengthy barrage since 2004. The Bad Guys learned quickly to shoot and skoot, so they don't get waxed in the process.

The current unit has only been here a few months. Nobody seemed to know that the DFAC was the safest place to be. Some people forgot that this is a war zone and bad things do happen. Heck, they don't even bother having PTSD classes anymore.

Hope you kept your head down and be safe. Talk about a hot reception for my friend who had just got back today.

I have been back from there about two months so far but with my month in europe it feels like I just got back now. Been back a couple of days and I feel bored which is a change from being insanely busy. Although I do miss being there in some ways.

We got it pretty regularly in Diyala, usually in multiples of 3 (3,6,9). Fired from a flat bed truck. ODA had a coordinates for the primary open area where the truck(s) would park and usually sent 2-4:1 back via mortars.

Stay sharp, Happy New Year,

Just got back from Diyala in September. What a hole. The ****ed up thing about that whole mess is that more often than not we couldn't shoot back.

Me or one of my flunkies "guns are laid."

Battle captain: "we'll send CAS or UAV."

Me to one of my flunkies: "call the FDC and let them know the guns can stand down."

Not really a paradise when you are stuck in a BDE TOC for a whole year telling units they can't shoot because what ever excuse they're wanting to use to fire indirect doesn't constitute a TIC or their packets are all jacked and need to to be redone. The constant sand storms don't help either.

CPT so and so: "SSG ******* you have no idea how many fires I have to piss on to put out that you start. Units are calling you an asshole."

Me: "Yes!"

Glad everyone is safe.

I got there in Feb 08... When the spring IDF rains came the next month, you'd think everyone forgot there was a war going on.

Fence picket for a ramp welded to a car jack... 107s for everyone. Dumb ass savages.

IDF is no joke....

At FOB Justice maybe a few weaks before we got there a mortar landed in between the building and the concrete wall, and I happened to move into that room. There were shrapnel holes in the metal holding the windows up, and the concrete wall was messed up pretty good. I heard there was someone in the room who was injured pretty good.

Also while I was there 4 mortars hit by the LZ...the last one was a dud. Some IA soldier picked it up, and tried to give it to my 6'5'' platoon sergeant. Never seen someone that big move so fast.

1st deployment we had a hole in the roof of our building where a rocket hit.

Re: duds, I am militant about not buying stuff made in China for a variety of reasons, one of which is the overall low level of quality. Guess maybe in some cases it's a good thing :p

Kinda reminds me too of the old Bugs Bunny cartoon where at the end he has a job in a bomb factory standing in front of a conveyor. As the bombs come by he hits each one on the nose with a hammer and writes "DUD" on it when it doesn't go off. Let's hope the enemy doesn't get hold of this sensitive information.
