It seems like a big deal is made over the whole issue of tapered pins (Colt, BCM) vs. straight pins (LMT). Can someone please explain the significance and/or the pros and cons of each? Thanks.

From the chart:
"A minor issue, but taper pins hold the front sight base better and tighter than a straight pin. Some makers attempt to make up for this by using slightly oversized straight pins that can be extremely difficult to remove."

straight pins can be undersized and vibrate out, where as taper pins are forced into the block/fsb and it would be nearly impossible for a properly inserted pin to work its way out due to the vibration of the barrel.

The 2/0 hand reamer used to ream the holes is all of $8 and the pins are sold for less than $5 a pair.
Only a couple minutes of your time and you are done.
It's a rather simple upgrade once the FSB holes are drilled and pinned with straight pins. You punch one out and ream to fit then complete the same process on the other pin.
Don't let not having taper pins be a determining factor on a rifle, as you can upgrade the pins for a few dollars.

A thread with more info on reaming.

That's the truth. LMT straight pins are nearly impossible to get out.
