My wife bought me a Colt LE 6920 for Christmas. (Thanks honey!)

Since this is my first AR, I was looking for some advice, tips, tricks, accessories, etc. I'm sure that all these areas have been covered before, so I apologize.

If someone could share some info on ammo selection, optics, range tips, etc. I would really appreciate it. If it is easier, please provide links to past threads.

I'm eager to began adding accessories but do not want to move too fast. My first purchase will be optics. I am looking into EoTech or some other type of holographic site since the gun will primarily be a 100 yd and under range gun/personal home defense. Any EoTech owners, please let me know how you like/dislike.

I appreciate any info on this subject. Thank You!

Congrats on the awesome gift, you have a smart wife.

Buy as much TRAINING and ammo (any 5.56 or .223) as you can afford as more rounds down range will help you figure out what accessories (if any) you truly need.

Cheers,
Hayes

Your wife is a might good women I hope you know. ;) The only thing the 6920 absolutely needs out of the box is a better sling and ammo. Ammo is self explanatory and slings is a personal matter your going to have to figure out. Otherwise it is a GTG carbine with countless options available at a later date.

What I can think of is mags, mix it up with pmags and USGI mags with magpul followers. Get a back up iron sight for your optic. Bore snake to run through your barrel after the range session when it's still warm to remove carbon and make things easier when you get home. Maybe an Otis kit to take with you to the range just in case.

The first thing I did with my colt was remove the carrying handle, and replace with an aimpoint m4s and troy buis. Added a Noveske End plate, magpul ACS stock, Magpul MS2 sling, and a tangodown pistol grip. The one thing I love about ar's and what brings me back to this weapon platform is it's modularity and how you can cater your weapon to your needs.

That is an awesome Christmas gift. One of the best possible, really.

Now what you need to do is read what is already here. Use the two links above and also search out any other questions. If using search does not give you the answer, just ask.

As much ammo and Mags as you can. A basic carbine course. Lube generously. A Free float rail is not necessary at this point, but you may want one in the future.
Learn to use the Iron Sights first, with a high level of proficiency before mounting a red dot sight. As you can see, this hobby is expensive...

Can't go wrong with the Colt 6920. Training classes, training classes, training classes. EAG, Grey Group, TigerSwan, Larry Vickers, Viking Tactics, Blackwater, Trident, and of course MagPul. Sure someone will be along to tell me one I forgot, but these are pretty much the top dogs.
