welcome. here's two threads that contain a lot of good information pertaining to your questions.

other options include Aimpoints with 3x flip-away magnifiers- an RDS (red dot sight) with a reticle-less scope mounted to a pivoting mount which lets you use the RDS at true 1x magnification and still have the ability to quickly magnify if needed.

the ACOGs are really good KISS-principled fixed 4x illuminated sights that dont take batteries.. they're widely loved, but do take a training commitment to become proficient with. trijicon also has a LOT of other optics, including variable magnification scopes.

i'm not one of m4c's optic experts, so that's about all i have to offer- but this is enough to keep you busy for a while.

have fun. :)

I have been examining this subject myself as well. I have the eyesight of the 53 year old I am. I have concluded that the sight system for me would be the Aimpoint and possibly the swing out magnifier mention above if I could save up enough money for both. If I could afford more than one gun, the other one would have a 1-4 power scope with an illuminated reticle on it.

For home defense, the Aimpoint would be the best option. I came to this conclusion from reading the postings of people who have the experience and qualifications to have opinions that should be listened to. The Aimpoint I would like to get is the T-1 because of its size. Its size would work best with the swing out magnifier in my opinion. For shooting at the range for entertaiment, it will work great too.

Don't forget to mount a white light on the gun so you can identify the target before you put the red dot on it.

Good luck in your search.

For what you need, I think a 1-4x optic is the way to go. I really like the Trijicon Accupoint. You can go from 1-4x quickly, so up close and longer shots are covered. The reticle is lit by fibre optic and tritium at night.

I also really like the looks of one of these and will get one eventually, but I can give you no first-hand details on them:

Thanks for the imput Crazymoose, the pit bull seems like what I'm looking for, but the price would require me to don a ski mask and visit a 7/11!
