Dont take this the wrong way but I've always heard and subscribed to "What's your life worth? a budget RDS or the best money can buy?" That said I went with an Aimpoint

Check eBay. You will usually find guys trying to upgrade to a new optic and selling the old one.

You can also find some older Trijicon RX models. These are fine optics just be aware of their limitations.

I bought my eotech used in the EE for $275. I've seen them w/ mounts for a bit over 300 recently. Eotech was having a rebate offer, I don't know if it's over.

primary arms has some cheap RDS that get good reviews. not everyone needs an aimpoint or an eotech.

This. I've had no problems whatsoever with my "M4comp" from PA, though it's just been general range use so far. VERY well built, holds zero, and good battery life so far. The multi-reticle is a nice feature, and the brightness settings are a definite plus. Also, customer service is second-to-none, FWIW.

Save your money until you can get the real thing. If it's something that you think you might ever have a serious use for, don't skimp.

Shoot irons until you can get the cash together for the real deal.

Looking for well maintained used Aimpoint ML2's, ML3's, or C3's is an excellent way to go.

Bushnell Holosight, made for them by Eotech, reasonably priced. I never used one, so I can't comment on quality or functionality.
