Check out the latest .380acp pocket pistol on the market: the Diamondback DB380. It's made in Cocoa, FL, supposedly by one of Kel-tec's defectors, and it's a solid little carry piece. At first glance it looks like the Glock that Glock never made. The DB380 also field strips instinctively like its aforementioned Austrian brother. It's striker-fired and the trigger pull is long and smooth, not unlike the legendary Kahr double action only. 6+1 rounds of .380acp are fed from what appears to be an Italian Mec-Gar magazine. Fit and finish are excellent-- especially when you consider the $302 price point. So far everything looks and feels great, but how does it shoot?

I took the DB380 out to the range this morning, gathering whatever .380acp rounds I could find at the shop-- a dismal 40 count. And it was a sorry ragtag bunch-- a mixed bag of Magtech FMJs, Speer Gold Dot, Corbon Pow'r Ball, and two lead nose reloads of unknown origin. I cleaned and lubed the gun with CLP and loaded the first magazine. The first two rounds went off without a hitch, but then came the first malfunction: a failure-to-eject the spent round effectively. I pulled the mag from frame and cycled the action to clear the jam. Unfortunately, the magazine doesn't really like to drop free 100% off the time, even when loaded to capacity. So, this is one of the rough edges of this new firearm that needs to be ironed out. The little DB380 ran flawlessly for another two magazines (12rds), but then I encountered a couple of failure-to-feed malfunctions. Out of the forty rounds fired, I ended up with a half dozen of these malfunctions. This is an issue that needs to be addressed before it can be considered a concealed carry gun in my book. Then again, the DB380 is a brand new gun from a brand new company-- so I give it some slack. They're well ahead of the curve.

After shooting, I returned to the shop and was able to compare the feed ramp of the DB380 to its more expensive cousin, the Kahr P380. The ramp on the DB380 has a narrow groove in the center, which should be more gradual and accommodating like the Kahr's design. I think this the weak link that is having an adverse effect on feeding. Also, the frame to magazine fit needs to be tweaked slighty to allow for a smoother operation. Overall, the Diamondback DB380 shows a lot of potential. This is the first generation of pistols from the brand new company and I believe they will iron out these issues and bring a truly exceptional product to market. This is definitely a company to watch in 2010!

Have a good weekend and God bless. -- Evan

No, they had a 3-way with a T-Square.

Evan, do you have any complaints about the grip angle?

can we get a pic comparing this to a G26 and an M&P compact?

Well...this should be interesting. It appears to be slightly larger than the Ruger LCP.

I'm not sure there will be any legal threat against Diamondback. Austrian Arms makes a .22lr Glock clone and they haven't been challenged. However, we all know what happened when HK flex their muscles against ATI/Amchar for the GSG-5.

Anyway, I'm going to hold off on my quarterly ball reduction and get out the Dremel tool. ;) I think if I smooth out the feed ramp and find a few hundred rounds of range ammo, I can get this thing dialed in. Stay tuned.

I'll be watching this one, the gun looks like a winner if it works. I handled one the other day and it looked and felt nice. It points pretty well, better than it looks like it would. Size is just slightly bigger than the LCP.

It's actually not much if at all bigger than the LCP it just looks that way from the pictures.

The grip looks steep, but it is really the most comfortable feeling and shooting little .380 I have owned.

There are some kinks to be worked out, but in the end I bet it ends up being one of the nicer little CCW guns. I got 30 rounds rapid fire through mine today and then it started having some issues, but I think part of that is from the frame warming up and flexing.

Next range session I plan on shooting 1-2 magazines and letting it cool then repeating and see how that goes. When will I ever need to fire more than 1-2 magazines rapid fire with a gun this small? If 6 rounds don't get it done, i'm more than likely toast anyways.;)

I build pocket holsters, thus the need to have so many little .380 guns. Most of the time I carry my S&W 340PD concealment is the biggest necessity.

OP, so you had 6 malfunction in 40 rounds? Are you f-ing serious? This is purely unacceptable. That weapon would either be going back to the manufacturer with a not so nice "make it right" demand or it would be going away for good.

stmcelroy, dude, you've got some very dangerous misconceptions in your post my friend.

I believe I will wait for an S&W Bodyguard .380.

These kind of guns are cool in theory, but few in my experience ever work like they should. One of my partners at work bought an lcp, took it to range qual, fired one round and the gun broke. Ruger fixed it of course, but I would never trust it again. I just think for a small gun, the J frame can't be beat.

Roger, Sir. Pretty bad results. I just got a case of Magtech .380acp in yesterday-- good FMJs. I'm going to give her another 200rds down range later this week and report back. Mfg site and manual states that it requires a break-in period of about this many rounds. So, I'm going to do what it tells me to. That brings up another concern in this economy: the nominal price of the gun is $302, but what's the REAL price when you factor in this much ammo being expended just to get the weapon to function. I am from the school that says a weapon should be good-to-go from the factory. Stand by.

Considering Glock's original patents have expired I doubt it.

Truth since even before the J frame was created.

S&W's I frame (from which the J was developed) was the gold standard in compact firearms for the first 60 years of the 20th century.

I'm not sure why others even bother.

Any updates on these?

Our local shop has had a nickel plated model collecting dust for four months. The DB feels great for a pocket gun.
