Con--increases weight and bulk.

Pro--provides additional protection.

With most ceramic plates, as well as steel ones, I feel much more comfortable with a soft armor backer.

Because current 5-6 mm steel plates don't seem to be able to stop 5.56 mm M193 type 55 gr FMJ--there have been a few stops in the soft armor backing although sometimes the 55 gr FMJ's even zip through the underlying IIIa soft armor: http://lightfighter.net/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=7336015661&f=440107306&m=5841000773&r=5841000773#5841000773

When I shot 3/8" plate steel with M193, I noted that the steel would "spall" and a chunk would be blown out, the bullet all but disentegrated. Using M855, the bullet would disentegrate, but the penetrator would pass through the plate. No spalling. It would then continue through 1 2x4 and into a second. I would definitely take all the armor I could get if I knew a 5.56 weapon would be brought to bare on my person!
