I like the functional/industrial look of the stenciling.
It might be the overspray that makes it work.

Anyway, it's definately unique.

I will probably try this once I go to Home Depot again, but with Black PMAGs and some approximation of Dark Earth or UDE.

01-23-10, 10:56
That does look neat! :)

I run black PMags, and I've just been using a silver paint pen with my initals and the mag number.

Your work looks really good, it looks sharp with the rest of the Magpul goodness on your carbine.

This also has the added benefit of being able to track the performance of each individual mag. If you start having problems, you can make a note to see if there's a trend. That way you will know if a mag is completely reliable or needs to be relegated to "other" duties or even tossed.

Then again, if I were in a situation that my life depended on the mag functioning everytime, I'd probably just toss out any problem child

I like how you did the numbering. It looks professional and has a certain no-nonsense high speed low drag look to it. Bet if you offered this as a service, you'd have customers

Kentucky Cop
01-23-10, 14:08
252, great job!

How did you place the stencil on the mag prior to painting? Did you just "set" the stencil down on the mag and give it a couple swipes from 6-12 inches away or did you somehow tape the stencil down. The edges around the numbers came out really defined. And my last question is how did you protect the window on the mags....tape? Thanks again for your help. Id rather ask you then get my scrapbooking wife involved. Who knows what the hell would be painted on my pmags!

252actual
01-23-10, 16:01
wow thanks for all the compliments guys. i never thought my frustration would turn into a hit haha. anyway to answer a couple of questions. one way i found to get past the number limit was to put the first digit of the duel digit number on the left side of the magazine and the second on the right so basically magazine 25 would read 2 on the left and 5 on the right. also i got the letter and symbol pack of stencils too so i get magazine A-Z as well as !, @, #,$,%,&*.... and so on. so really the possibility's are endless.

as far as how to get the stencil on the magazine, i kind of like things sloppy and industrial looking so the over spray was a must. i just laid the mag on the side, took a tiny piece of masking tape and stuck it on the back of the stencil so it wouldn't move and stuck it on there crooked, well in my OCD its angled to the rear on my reaction side and forward on my right side... then i shot the paint from about 10" away on an angle to get the over spray maybe 3 or 4 swipes and thats it. o and i did tape off the windowed pmags.

maybe ill make some kind of tutorial we'll call it "art of the dynamic magazine stencil" or something hahaha. :D

anyway glad ya like it.

yeah i have a question. What kind of paint do you guys use for the best protection? Because i used camouflage paints and the pain came out after two weeks.
do you need to add protective lay of paint on top as final coat? or just spray heavy coat and repeat it for 2 times ?

252actual
01-23-10, 16:58
ill have to post a review after ive used them for a while. i have painted lots of my gear though and from my experience a thinner coat works best. the thicker the paint the more it seems to chip off. scratching is unavoidable, and i kind of like the scratches it shows that they are actualy getting used :) but the lighter the coat the longer it seems to last. at least thats my experience.

Makes sense. Why is it that there is a line or box around the perimeter of the number? Was that the outside of the stencil? I may just need to go to Home Depot and see these bad boys and figure it out. I have been analyzing the box type line around it and cant figure out how that came to be. I am all ears and eyes if you want to post some pics of step by step. Again, job well done and I may try to duplicate your ideas. There is no telling how may hostages (pmags) that will die till I get it right!:D

Just got back from Lowes. I found the stencil pack near the mailboxes aisle. If anyone goes to look the stencils are in yellow and just like 252 stated it comes with numbers, letters, symbols. Now, what inch did you buy. I sat there going back and forth between the '3inch and '4inch size. They both looked good but I was curious what size you used. Also, I learned that Lowes only carries Valspar and Rustoleum spray paints so if your dead set on using the Krylon, you might just want to go the HD and pick up everything in one stop. I am thinking about going with the dark earth paint on my black pmags but I am questioning myself if it will show up good. Hmmmm.......

ive got a few friends that are stencil artists and we were messing around today painting different stuff. might be something to this. with some of the comments in the thread it gave me some ideas to stencil gear to make it look tech or like it is terminatoresque or something from a game like MAG or gears of war where the corporate names or numbers are stenciled on their weapons and gear, or each team has a different logo for their particular function... we did multi layer 3 color, and plain single color stencils of different images all flat tones, numbers, letters, symbols, some of a skull, a dagger, a tank, all kinds of weird stuff. it made it look like something out of a movie which was kind of cool... who knows. maybe im just geeking out but i think it might be fun to do some work like that... i dunno. sound stupid?

Well, I'll be the first to admit to plagiarizing the OP's most awesome artwork. Thanks for the great idea for those of us that lack originality:)

I started with Black Pmags and used the Rustoleum 1919 Deep Forest Green Ultra Flat color. They turned out pretty well. I put each stencil on in almost exactly the same place on each Pmag. I lined up the upper left corner of the stencil with the 'P' in the word PENDING on the Pmag. I lined up the lower right corner of the stencil with the curve in the Ranger Plate. This ensured consistency with all numbers.

On the opposite side of the Pmags I found a similar spot for the upper left corner of the stencil ( on my pmag versions the corner of the stencil was on the 'I' of the word Impact). It is very easy to see if you have the stencil lined up correctly when you go to paint the opposite side as the paint lines line up with the stencil.

I used blue masking tape and put a small piece on the top and bottom of each stencil. Line up the stencil and press hard on the tape. I dip several swipes with the paint over just the number part of the stencil and then some lighter overspray swipes on the top and bottom.

Under normal lighting the numbers are kind of hard to make out since the Green paint is pretty dark (not enough contrast). I may go back and get the Tan colored paint and lighty dust the number area once I practice a bit.

I practiced on an old 2x4 I had lying around - Thanks for looking.

Thanks again to 252actual for the great idea.

I wonder if a dark earth color would show up better on the black Pmags? I like yours and as most of us have black Pmags, I wonder what color would really rock against the black. I was envisioning a grey or silver may be the ticket on the black ones. Maybe reversing the color scheme of what 252 did may be cool. Foilage green paint on the black mags. Hmmmmm

The easiest way to make your own stencils (I found) is using the following materials:

1. Get some Wax paper (any food store sell this) Ralphs, Vons, safeway, etc
2. Get 1 roll of 4" or 6” wide blue masking tape (home depot, Lowes, etc)

Step 1.
Now that you have you're supplies cut a piece of wax paper a little larger than a regular sheet of paper (8.5"x11")

Step 2.:
Now take your 4" or 6” blue tape and cover the wax paper in strips, you’ll find that it will take 3 stirps of tape to cover the paper with 4" and 2 strips of tape to cover with 6"

Step 3:
Turn the wax paper over and again apply 2-3 strips of tape covering the entire wax paper.

Step 4:
Now that both sides are covered in tape, trim the piece of wax paper to 8.5"x11"

Step 5:
Insert the sheet into your printer and print out desired image:

Step 6:
Cut you’re your image and apply the cutout image to your item and paint.. since you covered your wax paper on both sides you now have 2 stenciles to use in the same time it took to cut out one. ;)

Hope that helps out the team..

yep that method will work for sure. im doing a picture tutorial right now on how to cut and use your own stencils. im using plastic material so you can re use them as many times as you want... sorry its taken so long. been busy with all kinds of stuff. ill have it up as soon as i can :D

and yeah ill spray your mags if you want to send em to me :) for a small fee hehe

hmm maybe ill spray them for a couple extra pmags

or you can tell me what logo or design you want on them and ill make the stencil and spray them with your personal logo and or number for trade... or cash haha who knows...

watch, this is totally going to become a second business...

Ok. so. sorry it took so long but its been a busy last few days.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2788/4308148779_1223f69a2b_o.jpg

i figured i would start with something simple for the tutorial, and i apologize for the crude presentation but ive never done a tutorial for anything before so yeah... and its almost 2:30 am...

for the first presentation i figured i would adorn the ever popular black windowless Pmag with a logo that is quite appropriate. now i know some people will say that the color i chose for the stencil is not tacti-cool but hey itll be my home defense magazine, and i just like it...

so first off.

supplies...

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4027/4308887352_932076b812_o.jpg

first there are a few things you will need. most of which can be acquired for just a few bucks at any craft store.

1. blank stencil sheets - now you can use card stock or some other form of thick paper but keep in mind if you want to re-use this stencil over and over on all your mags you will want a material that wont go limp on the home stretch.

2. scissors - reason... obvious.

3. x-acto blade and cutting board - or other similar finger removal device and anti wife offending cutting surface...

4. masking tape - for sticking to things.

5. tracing paper - i use this out of habit from work and to get a nice crisp line where i need to cut so theres no guess work.

6. image - to be stenciled.

Paint...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2776/4308148803_b4a4fd5a53_o.jpg

you can use whatever kind you want but the stuff that seems to stick best for me is either krylon or rust-oleum. flat paint is most desirable but at times satin will work fine. for this project i just used a satin apple red. why? because someone left the can sitting outside my shop :)...

Line drawing.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4024/4308887330_62226f1c34_o.jpg

i suggest making a line drawing on tracing paper before cutting the image. for me its easier because i can clean up any weird junk in the image and if something gets messed up i didnt cut up my original image or artwork.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2703/4308148825_ef68d364c6_o.jpg

once the line drawing is done cut yourself a chunk of stencil sheet and tape that puppy to the back of it top facing up. if you cant figure that out... quit now.

go ahead and start cutting directly on the lines. be careful as you move around because some areas become thin and its easy to break the sheet and then you have to clear the malfunction and refeed the magazine (stencil)...

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4006/4308887380_2bb1f451d4_o.jpg

when you cut start in the center and work your way out. if you start on the outside the sheet will be weak by the time you move to the inside and it will tear, and you will cry.

also, when you cut, pulling is the easiest way. as you round a corner roll the blade in the direction you want to cut and it will automatically go in that direction... its easy. you'll figure it out.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4060/4308887366_918e336812_o.jpg

whalah! finished. this took me about 30 seconds to complete...

just kidding. its gonna take a while. go slow, dont rush. if you have a small set of files this plastic can be smoothed out if your very careful. if you have a high spot or rough spot gently file the edge to get the desired result.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2702/4308887408_4b0aee3b95_o.jpg

you can shape the outer edge however you want depending on what type of over spray (if any) you want. i just stuck my masking tape roll over the stencil circled it with the marker and cut it out.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2746/4308887390_90df5440bf_o.jpg

i figured i would do a test run using an old Israeli orlite mag i had laying around so i took a few small pieces of masking tape and used them on the back of the stencil affixing the largest parts to avoid under spray and to keep it in place while being sprayed.

Painting....

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2724/4308148923_a22ba84823_o.jpg

fingers crossed, i sprayed the jerry rigged stencil/mag combo from about 10" away using my custom built fat tire painting table to avoid damaging my front porch. i sprayed at an angle to get the desired over spray swiping back and forth just a few times in order to keep the paint from running or becoming too thick.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4024/4308148939_55cc424d90_o.jpg

if you dont mind paint on your hands you can remove the stencil right away. i suggest waiting at least a few minutes and then gently removing the stencil without touching the magazine. be careful and let the tape release on its own or you will tear the stencil.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4016/4308887470_b614d93898_o.jpg

after peeling the stencil off i was glad i did the test run. the edges of the red were much more crisp that i was hoping which told me exactly what i needed to do... if the edges are too crisp the image looks forced and it will have a sticker type look and loose the industrial feel that im going for.

Now for the real deal....

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4045/4308148989_b8f92fe422_o.jpg

the newest version of the non windowed Pmag is the best surface for stencils. the windowed version works great too but you have to tape off the window if you still want it there. the older version of the Pmags are much more textured with high ridges and take a little bit more care when applying the stencil. both types work equally well.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4044/4308148965_0c0b87fb2b_o.jpg

slap that puppy on there. ( to avoid the crisp edges i got in the test run i used thicker pieces of masking tape to adhere the stencil to the mag resulting in the stencil being slightly higher off the surface of the mag. which allows more under spray, in turn softening the edges.)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2731/4308887542_5b554d24e1_o.jpg

repeat step whatever the hell it was back when we painted the other thing.:D

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2794/4308149005_42c2ba8102_o.jpg

peel stencil again keeping fingers crossed...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2734/4308887526_1dd3c14b65_o.jpg

admire soft edges of paint resulting from above described thicker masking tape resulting in industrialesque looking goodness.

let dry.................................................... and then.

the satin finish looks a bit more shiny now but as it cures it fades quite a bit which is good.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2749/4308887268_ccb0c81058_b.jpg

and one more showing a few different styles...

all in all it was pretty easy. the hardest part is cutting the stencil of course. just go slow, watch your fingers and if you cut your finger off just make sure its not your trigger finger.

ive been having allot of fun doing this stuff. who knows something might come of it all... ive done some more complicated stencils and some more that look really industrial but i figured i would use a simple image for the tutorial. ive got a million ideas and tons of blank stencil paper...

only thing is im running out of gear to paint haha...

hope i didnt bore you to death  thanks.

I've been passively keeping an eye out for stencils small enough to do double-digits on the magazine body.

We bought my mother one of those "Cricket" paper cutter deals for her computer so she can do scrapbooking and what not. I'm gonna ask her if she can cut some heavier paper stock and make some. She can make them with regular paper, but heavier stock would be nice. What size you thinking? Maybe I can have her make up a couple of sets.

252actual, thank you for the idea, and showing it to all of us.

Low, cost, simple, unique (well maybe not after all of us on M4c do it :D), and effective. I like it.

I did a few of my foliage mags, and like it so much I will prolly do the rest of my training mags!

and FMCDH i did some with letters too i just havent posted pics. ill try and get some shots of those too.

Longhunter that would work for sure. acetate would work really well as long as its the old school thick stuff. we used those back in the day when i first started tattooing before we had thermal fax paper to make stencils for skin.. that projector type plastic might be a bit thin so you would have to be more careful but yeah thats a good idea.

Best Tutorial of the Year.

You should write "How to Build an AR for Dummies!" The balance between tech expertise and having Bubba Dumass check his skill level is perfect.

I'm reading through the thread and everything I thought up was done in the next posting, right down to the Magpul stencil.

Brilliant!

I originally had a question if it would be too recognizable to put a large character on the side of a mag for tac use. Oh, wait, these are range mags, and second, can zombies read anyway?

So, put the numbers on horizontally using 2" and work down the mag or something. The 90* mis-orientation should suffice for that circumstance - if you bother to even have numbered mags in the field.

Oh, wait - how about SKULLS FOR THE FIELD, or the ace of spades, a special rune ( I've got mine,) whatever. I have a particular affinity for an old skool skull design from a private forum. Toxic green would not be out of line as a demo. For that, the netbook, too.

Oh, wait NOOOOOooooo, we've just discovered a new illness!!!

Evil Stencil Disease is on us!

Rear MBUS on backwards? Why so?

It was an experiment. It actually worked as well that way as the 'Magpul way'.
I saw no difference in performance.

Since the photo was taken, the rear was turned around to give a slightly longer sight picture, but the front was left reversed.
It works better for me that way with the AFG.
I can keep my hand firmly on the AFG and activate, or retract the MBUS with my thumb without moving my grip.

I've got an idea for my own emblem that was inspired by-of all things- the mercenary unit I created for for Battletech, a sci-fi table top war game involving giant romping stomping robots. The design is a variation of the Jolly Roger using a wolf's head instead of a skull, and crossed rifles or swords. I'll get my son to help me create it. He just graduated college with a bachelor's in Game Arts and Design, has cool graphics programs and ain't afraid to use them

At this point, all I do is number my mags with a pain pen. If they test good, I add some blue pain pen to them. If they are bad and are for range only use I mark them with red paint pen.

very cool idea

I am a cheap * bastard so I will not buy personalized gear like that.

Often it is cheaper to start with good quality gear right from the start. That way you are not wasting cash on trash. Like the PMAGs used here are worth every cent. Don't think anyone is paying anything for this other than the price of a can of spray paint and a stencil kit or two

I usually don't like rattle canned rifles, but that is a pure work of art.

I haven't read this thread yet, so that I can give you an honest assessment of your poll. I'm gonna go browse after I've written.

I have to be honest I voted "Hell Know, I'm cooler then you." but I don't hate you, I just know I'm cooler then you when it comes to this stuff and being willing to pay for it...;)

Hell you asked.

Now for an explanation:

When I buy an AR from a top tier manufacturer I know the price I am paying for that AR is equal in value to the quality of it's manufacture. The same as a PMAG, or an optic. This changes when you start thinking about custom art work and designs, and I speak as a professional artist when I say this.

For example I volunteered two years ago to fly to a state out west and do a project with at risk youth. We used stencils to create a mural of their art work on a patio. The piece was massive and I didn't get paid, but it was an awesome experience, and life changing for the kids. We also pushed the materials we used to the absolute limit. Lets just say patio paint can't withstand a Rocky Mountain Winter, even if it's clear coated. This was an honest disclaimer given to the organization prior to the project. I didn't know how well the paint would last in the environment, especially considering that the environment destroys everything else it touches over time anyway. They accepted that and the project moved forward.

Imagine how potentially angry they would have been if they paid me thousands of dollars for the project? Imagine how sh@tty I would have felt about the failure.

Artwork has value only if the buyer is 1. Paying for the experience of it (ie a one time thing, like a museum or a viewing), or 2. If it is timeless enough to justify its acquisition as a physical product and investment on the part of the buyer. IE it must withstand the test of time/application to a degree that is of the highest standard in it's media. So a mural must be able to last decades, even centuries. An oil painting Millenia. A tattoo a life time (and more if it goes to the museum in Japan).

Purchasing artwork for an AR-15 or for my gear would mean that the materials used would have to last as long as the rifle. No rubbing off of paint, no fading ext. Why would I buy a spray painted AR mag that is going to wear off in three to four uses if it doubles the price of the mag? Why have you stencil my AR with a skull if it is just going to get f-ed up in a range bag?

So those are my two cents.

If however you can add detailed imagery that CAN last as long as the life of the rifle, if you are capable of doing such things as plastic casting similar to Magpul but with different colors, powder coating and doing it in designs, water jet cutting and and router work that uses a CAD path to cut minimally into steel, stencil work beyond what I see here, or maybe even airbrushing to automotive standards, PM me and maybe I will contract you out to do some of my art work for me... ;)

He just graduated college with a bachelor's in Game Arts and Design, has cool graphics programs and ain't afraid to use them

hey.. I like that game... maybe you can give me a copy of that emblemIt's been awhile since we had this conversation, but my son finally found the time to make my Jolly Roger for me. I think it's the coolest! At your request, lanceriley, here it is

Sorry didn't have time read every post so sorry if this idea was covered.

you could get some "pinstripe tape" then tape it off (numbers, symbols, anything you can draw with that flexible tape) then spray your mag (or what not) then let paint dry.
Then peel off tape to reveal your work.

Then lay a clear coat over the top... let dry... enjoy.

You could even use as many colors as you want like the auto (ect..) painters
do to make flames and designs.

I used to have a guy do amazing air-brush art on my motocross helmets.

**remember the cooler you make em' the more your going to have to keep an eye on em'! sorry but it's a sad fact**

This is a GREAT thread - and inspired me to do the following:

I used the 2" stencils with Krylon 4293 Olive Ultra-Flat Camoflage paint. I used the Alphabet stencils to avoid having to fit two numbers on the mags.

Again - THANKS 252actual for this great thread!

Ruff Shod,

Yeah - you putting "AA" on mags would be cool!

ForTehNguyen,

Yep - I need six more. Gonna order them on Monday.

markm,

I don't mark them so I won't lose them.

I mark them because the weak link in every magazine fed semi or fully-automatic firearm is the feeding device - or magazine. If the critical feed lip area gets damaged, or if the body itself gets dented, etc. - it can turn your high speed low drag firearm into something as slow to load as your great great grand-pappy's muzzle loader.

For this reason we need to understand that magazines are consumable items - and need to be replaced on an as needed basis. One way to ensure we are only replacing bad magazines is to mark them in such a way as to easily identify the bad one from the good ones.

For that purpose I have been numbering my magazines for decades. That way - during training - if I have a magazine related malfunction, I note the number on the magazine, and just like a bad pupil in class - I watch it. When it comes around again I pay close attention to it. If it displays bad behavior again - I pull it from service and use it as a 'malfunction training aid' when I want to practice malfunction drills. I have also used them for arial practice - shooting them like a clay pigeon with my shotgun. :D

Here is my "old school" way of marking mags:
