Contact the companies whose stuff you want to sell and ask them. Do it directly.

Each company works differently on how they distribute their products.

Inventory and website development/maintenance will be your biggest costs. Be prepared to spend a nice chunk on that.

The development cost isn't all that bad, many sites such as bravocompanyusa use www.volusion.com It's cheaper than having something built from the ground up, in any case it's a lot less than a brick&mortar location.

What's your startup budget, inventory wise? With all the things you seem to want to sell, if you figure is less than 6 figures, you're in the wrong industry.

i use the following wholesale only distributors:

krollcorp.com
moteng.com
tacticalgeardistributors.com

some manufacturers and items overlap and they offer no minimum orders. very good people to deal with. backorders on items are not that bad either.

i do sell other stuff, but i had to get direct dealerships with them which require an opening order and minimum orders.

blueridgeknives.com
eagleindustries.com
atlanco.com
propper.com
valorcorp.com

i do not have an ffl (especially in kalifornia) so i mainly sell tactical gear, knives, etc.

after training on alcatraz island with a couple of swat teams, i have decided to add airsoft to my business. well good luck.

Figure out a niche you want to start in:

tactical
cowboy action
hunting
handgun accessories
etc

Choose a few product lines in that one niche and contact the manufacturers. If they tell you to use a distributor, ask for their distributor list, otherwise see if you can go direct. That is usually the least expensive way to get inventory if you can go direct but not always, so getting the list of distributors that company uses is a good idea anyway

Figure out how you want to sell:

your own website?
on the forums (ar15.com, m4c, or whatever forums is appropriate for your niche)
ebay/gunbroker

If you are going to have your own website, how are you going to promote it and get people to come to it?

You will probably want to have a merchant account so you can take credit cards directly.

Join the NSSF -- they are a trade organization for shooting sports and they offer their members services through partners including merchant accounts and Fedex discounts

Brownells also has some sort of dealer program that includes UPS discounts and merchant accounts

Start small. Don't try and stock every gun item known to man. Say you choose tactical -- choose a couple vendors that you are familiar with -- I mean familiar with their products -- and get a few of their products to start.

Pay cash for your inventory. Do the Dave Ramsey thing.

Is this meant to be a full time business or part time?

Its mostly a hobby. I just enjoy wheeling and dealing. I always use cash , I dont believe in credit unless your buying a house or something extreme . I dont understand these big companies that have to get credit to make payroll and keep 0 balance. Everything goes out to the share holders immediately and then they run to the tax payers when they get into trouble. Its bullshit , what ever happen to putting the funds back into the business? Anyway, alot great ideas here

1 - Get spell check ( it's I-N-T-E-R-N-E-T)

2 - Draft detailed business plan and monthly cash flow analysis.

3 - HIRE LOCAL ACCOUNTANT AND ATTORNEY.

4 - Pay cash and hope for the best!

amen to that.

i only take orders for people and do not really stock anything. i do this part time (hobby) since i have a full time job. look into getting a costco executive card, they offer internet and merchant account programs. then use the card to get the quickbooks premier retail software. this will help you keep track of everything business related. takes away a lot of headaches.

i am going to check into the nssf thing.

All of which will require a FFL, sales tax certificate and a commercially zoned location.

RSR and Sports South don't for non FFL items. RSR has a special account for accessories only. I am "signed up" with Sports South but have never bought anything from them.

They just require a sales tax cert, maybe a business license, and proof of being a business and not just buying for you and friends. (In my experience)
