View Full Version : The Art of War
Can you recommend a versions or edition of Sun Tzu's The Art of War? There are quite a few and it's kind of daunting trying to decide on which one to get.
May I also recommend "Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant" and Rommels "Infantry Attacks" Not sure which version of the Art of War is better I did a google search and it told me the differences but I'm not sure what to tell you. Read both? :)
I have this version, and I thought it was easy enough to understand.

I'd recommend starting with Thomas Cleary's translation of Sun Tzu's Art of War. There are a number of different versions but avoid any abridged version and try to get complete texts with commentaries if possible. Machiavelli's Art of War is also a nice read as well (this (http://www.amazon.com/Art-War-Niccol%C3%B2-Machiavelli/dp/030681076X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265619424&sr=1-2) is the one I have and enjoy).

I am also happy with Cleary's translation.
Do you also have Miyamoto Musashi's "Book of 5 Rings" on your list? I have a second version coming from Amazon right now to compare the translations.

Damn I didn't know there were different versions. I must have the hard to understand one. I just read it over and over and learn more every time. Book of the 5 rings is amazing. I have to pick up Musashis book also. Another good martial art book is Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere. If your into those kinda things that is.
any one you get will be decent. its pretty hard concepts to screw up. i did a oral report on this book for speech class in college. one of my favorite books to read. i keep a copy next to the throne for days im feeling symbolic

There are apps for smartphone available too, for free.
Just downloaded one to my Kindle for free. I have not looked at it yet. If you have one it is worth a shot.
