Are billet uppers (VLTOR & LT) over-engineered for general-purpose/HD/fighting builds, or do they add value even for those types of applications? What kind of benefits would general purpose users see?

When you're looking to squeeze out every bit of accuracy you can a billet upper will do you best.

On a fighting rifle a regular forged upper will serve you just fine, most people can't shoot well enough to see the difference. It's takes some good quality optics in a good mount and good ammuntion to see it and even then I typically hear of .25 MOA better accuracy using billet uppers. If all you're running is an Aimpoint or Eotech it just has a higher CDI (chicks dig it!) factor ;). That said I do find them to fit lowers much nicer, they fit billet lowers really nicely.
