The awnser is yes but not on any standardized weapon that comes to mind. I operated with some guys from RANGER BAT around Bargram Airfield in 2004 and 2 of there snipers had sniper systems with an 18" barrel and a midlength gas system this is just one example.

Why do you ask this anyhow?

wondering if the military used them or if they were just something that were made for us civies... thats all

midlengths were created back in the early 2000s as a response to the problems carbine gas systems experienced. Obviously by this time M4s have already been in use for a long time in the military

As ICANHITMAN stated yes but only in the form of SPR (Special Purpose Rifle) for SOF guys, other than these special uses. No standard issue to 99.9% of the military is either carbine length or rifle length gas systems.

I thought most of all the 18" SPRs used rifle length? I could possibly see the 16" Recce using a midlength.

The Reece rifle is mid-length.

In the initial development of the M4, did Colt experiment with a mid length gas system, and if so what was the reasoning for not using it over the carbine length system?

Bayonet mounting I believe.

The M203 notch is also right where the FSB on a mid length is so they would have to retrofit existing M203's to work with it, and there would be a different setup between ones mounted on rifles and carbines.

right but, aren't M203's and the new M302's mounted to the rail system now. So IMO the carbine length gas system should be ditched on M4's with barrels long enough to support a Midlength. 14.5in M4's with a Midlength would help solve alot of problems I think. But then again, when I think, smoke rolls out my ears, my eyes glaze over and that little hampster has a heart attack....

M203s dont clamp to the rails, they replace the bottom 1/4th of the rail system, and still clamp to the barrel.

hummm, my mistake. Was under the impression that because of the newer rail mount systems, they mounted to the rail.

Some do mount to the rail system as part of the SOPMOD kit. However, the majority of 203s are still mounted to the barrel.

Stickman's photo doesn't show the rail cut away to mount the 203, and if so, how does that work with the new M4A1 with no cuts?

Stickman has photographed an LMT rail mounted M203, which is probably what you saw. The standard issue M203 is the barrel mount version. It mounts around the barrel in front of the barrel nut and around the barrel at the end of the launcher (standard handguards, M203 handguards, KAC RIS or RAS) or directly to the handguard (DD RISII) or special adapter (KAC URX and I think the ARMS SIR as well).
To mount an M203 you need either an M16, M16A2, M4, or M4A1 barrel and an M203 compatible handguard. Only the rail mounted M203 or the HK M320 (also rail mounted) would be able to be used on a mid length barrel.
