View Full Version : Interoperability: Magpul B.A.D., PMags, and a Redi-Mag?

The title says it all.

Is it possible to run a Redi-Mag RM MKI with a Magpul BAD installed? Do PMags fit properly (and reliably) in a Redi-Mag device? I'm looking at getting the Redi-Mag made by 'Boonie Packer.'
Thanks,
Pat

Just saw Magpul's Art of The Tactical Carbine and in part 1 Travis was running a rifle with everything you mentioned. Dunno if his Redi Mag was gen 1 or 2 though.

Im running a Gen 1 Redi Mag using P-mags with the B.A.D. no problems so far, YMMV.

Thanks guys, I just wasn't sure if there would be any clearance issues with the involved equipment. I'm already running PMags in my 5.56 upper, and I just ordered the B.A.D. from AIM.

No issues with mine and all I run are Pmags now. I use the Redi-Mod (the lightened version of the Redi-Mag from BFG).

Always having a reload with your rifle is a huge benefit. The BAD makes those reloads fast an efficient. Malfunction drill are easier now as well.

Exactly. That's why I'm going with the B.A.D. and the Redi-Mag. It sure looks like BFG charges far more for their 'improved' version, which appears only to have been lightened. I think the Redi Mag is about $90 or so, while the BFG is about $170. For that much, I think I'll just hang with the exra bit of weight.

Thanks again,
Pat

If I remember right the Redi Mod has a better finish also, mabey someone eles could chime in on that ?

Does anyone actually know what the weight is on the standard and lighter models? That would be interesting to know. I have been thinking about this for a while now and figured since I'm handy with a dremel I may go the standard route...

if you run the gen1, take a file to it and dehorn the interior. there were some sharp edges in mine that the plastic pmags got hung up on. it's smoother with GI mags, as the alum/steel on steel is smoother than plastic to steel.

my redi-mod had no issues

I just realized that there are about four versions of the Redi Mag. Are any of them significantly better than the others? I do like the idea of being able to release one of the mags independent of the other, which appears to be an option with second gen and later models only.

If I remember right my Gen 1 Redi Mag was about 9 or 10 oz and the Redi Mod runs about 7oz

I'm thinking the same thing Pat. I have several rifles and could buy two for the price of the redi-mod. I'm planning to buy the standard unit. I’m sure the redi-mod is priced fairly, it looks like a good amount of work to modify it.

Looks like pmags are good to go; $84.95 and they show it with a pmag in the unit http://www.redi-mag.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=5

No current production Redi-mags, regardless of what variation, release both magazines together. Boonie Packer isn't even ordering the parts to make that version anymore.

My personal preference is for the BFG version because it has a better finish, is lighter weight, and (most important to me) the 45* cut at the bottom gives better visibility. However, the added cost won't be worth it to some and I'd simply make the 45* cut with a dremel or milling machine on the standard version(s).

I really, really need to take a bunch of these off my guns and get pictures...

Note that in this picture the BFG Redi-Mod (http://www.blueforcegear.com/product.cfm?type=cat&cat_id=1&prod_id=91) has a button with which to engage the bottom of the "ping pong paddle" to lock the bolt to the rear.

Compare that with current-production Redi-Mags direct from Boonie Packer (http://www.redi-mag.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=5) which have no such button. I do not know if BFG is going to continue to get bodies with the button from BP or if the Redi-Mod will soon be missing the button as well.

To answer the OP, ANY Red-mag or Redi-Mod that I've come across will work with both the BAD lever and Pmags. I have 2 Redi-Mods, an older Redi-Mag that drops both magazines with the rifle magazine release, and at least two later production Redi-Mags with separate releases (IIRC one has the bolt-lock button and one doesn't).

what is the difference in the "quick attach" version? the installation instructions seem to be the same.

This combo works for me on my RRA CAR.

This is my current setup. PMags fit just fine. I had to remove a small amount of metal from the top portion of the Redi Mod that rests inside the trigger well. The B.A.D lever rubbed ever so slightly. All is good now. I've run this for a few weeks now and I like it.
