I have one. Been doing research and know there are things that could be better about them or least some parts.

Rather than buying a new rifle atm what could I do to make it "better"

My gas key is not staked right. Would it be worth it to buy a new one or do you think a RR gas key (assembly) is fine if I get it staked?

The castle nut is also not staked, so I plan on having that staked as well.

What else?

I heard things like the "H" bar? or "H" something could someone explain what that is and how much they cost? Or if its even worth it.

I am not trying to gain "points" on the "chart" for kicks but want a reliable rifle as it is my only one. So any small things I can do that are relatively cheap to do to help is what I am shooting for.

Thanks for the help.

:)

I ran into this problem, and don't worry you don't need to replace the entire carbine to get a reliable hard use gun. Properly staking the end plate and castle nut is very easy to do yourself. Just buy a center punch at a local harware store and stake it yourself.

As far as your gas key, you have three options. 1: replace the carrier with a BCM, COLT, LMT or Daniel Defense 2: Take it to a gunsmith and have it properly staked or 3: Buy a MOAKS device from m-guns and stake it yourself. The bolt can easily be upgraded by purchasing a BCM bolt or LMT bolt and putting it in your carbine, that way you have a shot peened MPI tested bolt and can keep your standard bolt for a spare. You might want to look into an H buffer to slow down cycling a bit and reduce wear and tear on parts, but it is not a must.

Make sure you have good mags, and with these small steps you should have a reliable and durable carbine you could trust your life with.

Stake the stuff that needs to be staked, and shoot your rifle. If you find it necessary to buy another BCG to make you feel better then so be it. No one here is going to tell you that you have a top tier rifle, but if your goal is to make the most out of the one you have follow the thread that was attached above.

I heard things like the "H" bar? or "H" something could someone explain what that is and how much they cost? Or if its even worth it.

Could be one of two things. First, I'm pretty sure your RRA has a heavy barrel (HBAR) profile under the handguards. Not too much to do about that.

The other reference could be about installing an 'H' buffer. Read this thread (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=5136). It's about a $20 part. Much of the benefit will depend on what kind of ammo you're shooting.

As for the BCG, my personal opinion is to have it staked and then shoot it until it breaks. If the bolt dies, then upgrade it with a better tested part.

Rob's article (linked above) is an excellent resource. I'll also second the opinion that using quality mags (my recommendation is the PMAG) is essential.

Good luck!

Stake it and shoot it. As things break or wear out replace them with the best parts you can get.

I agree with the previous poster......Stake it, and shoot it. I too bought an RRA for my first AR......I said OOPS!!! Read, and read, and researched. Ok, went back to the store I bought it from, and said can you stake the gas key and castle nut please.....He (gunsmith) said..."Why?.....I said "for my peace of mind." and so be it. Since then I've put roughly 2k through it. I bought an M&P shortly there after and have been running that set up now for quite sometime through numerous classes and competitions. But stake it shoot the hell out of it and see what happens. Worst case you have malfunctions and issues, you get it fixed and come back on here with a report to share ;)

buy a backup bolt.. you should always have one anyway, so no loss there.

i'd also recommend this cheap, easy upgrade: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Extractor-Spring-Uprade-Kit-p/bcm%20extractor%20spring%20upgrade.htm

good bolt to have as backup: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-AR15-Bolt-Assembly-MPI-p/bcm%20bolt%20assemly%20mp.htm

theres a few other things i'd do too, but the first reply has a link to all of them.

blast thy blaster.

1. Stake carrier key and castle nut.
2. Replace bolt with a BCM and keep RRA bolt as a spare.
3. Consider replacing the 2-stage trigger with a standard GI trigger.
