I am partial to Chinese and Hungarian AK's. What is your favorite?

My favorite would be a Russian Type III but I'll settle for a Bulgarian any day of the week :D

Hopefully my SLR-105 which should be arriving shortly. Before that, my SAM-7 which, based upon utter stupidity, I let go.

I think the AK-104 would be my all around favorite, but I'm very partial to Type 3 AKM's or 1978-ish AK74s.

I saw an Arsenal AK today that I really liked. I forget the designation. The only thing I didn't like was the black furniture and the Nato length stock, but that can be fixed. I'm really more of an AK guy than an M4 guy, but I've spent my last year or so on AR's/M4's.

Oh, and this is one of my favorites as well:

http://members.cox.net/mwinder3/images/romy.JPG

This started out as a Romy G kit that as far as I could tell had never been shot. I ordered a Global Trades Type II receiver from Tom Sawyer and had him engrave the original Romy selector markings. I then sent everything to Chris Butler for assembly.

I have had a few Ak's. So far my fav I've owned is my Mak90 5.56. I still haven't gotten my paws on a Yugo. I'd like to see one of the 5.56 Yugos.

I really want a 308 Vepr.

They make a very nice AK. They have a very smooth trigger pull and they have a blued finish that is then parkerized. I wouldn't hesitate to buy (another) one.

All of my AK's are my favorite :)

My absolute favorite is...
hummmm....
AK105 built on a Saiga receiver by Ted Marshall...

Second is my AK103, built by Chris Butler...

The 12-13 others... they are also my favories ;)

I've had so many that I've let go of. I had an unfired Hungarian underfolder. Prettiest AK I've ever seen. I never fired it, didn't want to mess it up. I let it go for a lot less that I paid for it. I could fill a good sized van with the ones I've let go... :(

12-13 AKs? A Marshall AK-105? You sir, are a menace ;) I think my dream AK would be an AK104 or a late wooden stocked AK74 by Ted. His rifles are nothing shy of being works of art.

I'll add this as one post of an AK Class AAR on 10-8.
http://www.10-8forums.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=31314&Main=30861#Post31314

There is a lot more going on in the AK world now then 10 years ago, and a lot more people making things that make the gun more useable.
Sorta' like what happened to AR's...

While i have always been locked into stock AK's, that has been because a former job title put me in the happy position of exploiting these- and other- weapons.
Add to that the mil requirement to teach BEM's how to use their gear, and battlefield pick up training, the need for boutique guns wasn't on my short list.
There are a lot of things that can be done to make the AK more user friendly and therefore efficient.
At the last AK class, Jason Jakob showed up with a Krebs modified AK- The KCI Enhanced Speed Load Tactical Rifle.
While many builders (and this seems especially true in the pistol field) mod guns for the sake of modification, the Krebs gun appears to have been well thought out.
One training issue that is a constant is that in reloading, a right hand dominant shooter would invariably "overshoot"- that is, move the magazine too far to the right.
This rifle has a plate riveted to the bottom of the receiver that also extends down along the right side of the receiver, flaring outboard. The mag can't overtravel to the right- condition corrected.
The stock mag release is ground down, and an offset (to the right) release added, allowing for your trigger finger to access it. I would strongly prefer that the old one also be retained to enhance the speed reload that we teach.
The issue buttstock is replaced with a Vltor. The M4 pattern stocks are LOP adjustable (a very good thing) and provide for a more comfortable platform. While i prefer the Crane to the Vltor, either is a marked improvement over the issue stock.
The issue safety is replaced with the Krebs MK11 Enhanced Safety; the issue rear sight replaced with the Krebs aperture sight.
The forend is replaced with a KCI Quad rail, and the People's muzzle brake is replaced with an M4 type.
One additional item is the KCI forend vertical grip and sling plate.
This neat little item offsets the VFG to the left in order to deconflict with mag changes (such as on the AMD and AIMS rifles).
Additionally the VFG is angled appx 10-15 degrees to the left, making it very comfortable.
A groove on the left side accepts the butt end of a SureFire legacy light, and an optional sling plate attaches to the top.

The net result is something that possess ergonomics and capability not dreamed of in the design bureau.
You can argue that for this much cash downrange you can have an M4 pretty well done the same way, and that argument is valid.
However, there are a great many that want an AK without the WW2 baggage, and also having a greater ability to function more ergonomically.
Your choice....

Boom- I do, but it is on the 10-8 thread, top of pg 3. It is an image of the shooter firing, so not a good technical picture- sorry!
The Krebs website does have an image also.
It was a much better reifle then i originally thought. (ergonomics)

Went shooting today...it's finally cooled off. I was thinking that I might have to sell my SLR-105 as the wife needs a new car....but after shooting the rifle today, there's no way I'm going to get rid of it. Clearly my favorite AK...it's the only one I own right now, but I've shot and owned others. I've never been able to repeatedly hit 12 inch plates at 200 yards before.

Yes it is It is the M83 Surefire on a Romy G and a tapco flat some OD green duracoat and HK black duracoat.
I couldnt think of anything more deserving to put it on. I tend to do more traditional builds but latley have gotten the bug to go tactical.

OUCH!!! That was a close one huh :( !! I had to say something cause, well, I can feel your pain :( !! Good move on not selling the weapon for a car (even if it IS for your wife) cause, for one thing (in case you need to errr...help her decide :D ) is...

THE PRICE OF THE WEAPON WILL INCREASE!!!
We all know what happens to the resale price of a vehicle  !!

Oh and BTW, my favorite AK would be the IMI Galil (you'd still consider that an AK, right  ??))...even though I've only shot one for a few days. I still have my dreaded "MAK-90"s but hey...they have functioned FLAWLESSLY and will eat anything I feed them....probably even my WIFE if she asked me to sell them for a CAR

Its a toss between my 2 krinks and the Krebs KTR-03V.

The KTR-03V's quality is unsurpassed. Its a shame Krebs no longer makes the KTR-03V, Take a look:

So what makes the VEPR so likeable? I might be getting an AK. Alex is a family friend but he still makes the money in the end so I want to look elsewhere for opinions.

My Galil AR is first on my list. I have owned many AK's over the years, but I just picked up a new one that is a NDS receiver with a Romanian kit and Bulgarian furniture. THe cool thing is that it is an 11.5" barrel with a permanently mounted Tantal look brake that gets it to 16". The gun just balances and feels "right". I will shoot it next week to see if it functions as good as it feels. It is a prototype from a newer builder out of Gilbert AZ. that looks promising.
