It is the Direct Connect compensator from Smith Enterprise. Basically it's a compensator with the same form factor as their Vortex flash hider. I have been searching high and low for a comp that would be compatible with my 2009-model Gemtech HALO, but haven't had any luck. The older model HALOs would work with the PWS FSC-556, but that compatibility was lost when Gemtech redesigned the internals last year to allow use of the Smith Vortex.

Like the Vortex, the Direct Connect mounts to the barrel without a crush or peel washer, and does not require timing.

The 2009 HALO has a secondary front chamber with raised portions that engage the slots of the Vortex, locking the can in place. The Direct Connect is the same length and has the same slots as the Vortex, so...

This will be going on my BCM mid-length build, which will be a testbed for all sorts of new stuff, including the BAD lever, Magpul ACS stock, and a soon-to-be-released quad rail. I'm very interested to get the DC out to the range to test it out. I plan on doing a comparison shoot along with a naked muzzle, A2 flash hider and VLTOR VC-1. My M-11/9 wears a Smith compensator and it is very effective, so my hopes for this device are high.

Stay tuned!

Looks like a viable option for those in AWB states. I am interested to hear about its performance.

I emailed Smith Ent a while ago to ask about it's stats. The response I got was that they didn't do any testing, and "it is what it is"
