Anyone know of any good spyware removal tools?

My connection is pretty shady right now. If I stream video or play a game, I get a pause every couple seconds. Any Ideas?

If you can download this .iso and burn it to a CD:

http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_cd/BitDefenderRescueCD_v2.0.0_3_08_2009.iso

Once you burn it, boot from the CD with an internet connection and run the scan. It should find any malware and fix the problem. It also has a tool to check for rootkits.

Malwarebytes'

You might try some cleaners, could just have a ton of crap you do not need

CleanUp! or CCleaner

SUPERAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) is one of my favorites. The free version just cleans up the mess, the paid version has real-time protection. However malware does not really sound like the problem.

Need more details. Wired or wireless? OS? router? ISP?

Malwarebytes'
+1 on this. I think this is the best option out there FOR NOW. Don't worry, they will get successful like the others and manage to screw it up (Adaware / Spybot Search and Destroy). But for now its your best bet.

Malwarebytes, superantispyeare are good, I use both of them. However I agree with Preferred User and don’t think it’s spyware. Go to www.speedtest.net and find out how fast your connection is.

Someone will come along shortly and tell you to get a Mac.

It could be anything. I know lately windows updates has basically been making my computer unusable, the update downloads seem to be endless lately, never had a problem before but I turned off all the automatic stuff just to stop the bullshit.

Amazingly very few patches for Win7 or W2K8.

Oh, and Macs . . . not all they are cracked up to be. If you want real stability - FreeBSD.

That sounds more like a network issue.

This is free (or used to be) and gets most basic registry issues back to normal for Windows XP. http://www.ccleaner.com/

This is free anti-virus, which is pretty popular.

My wife's PC has been running Microsoft Security Essentials since I learned about it from a member here on the forum. No issues to report, it doesn't take over the computer, and you can run a full scan while still doing everything you need to do. It's very nice and FREE!

I use Symantec Endpoint Protection that I get free from AKO. There are plenty of freeware solutions out there.

Try the Major Geeks or Bleeping Computer site. They have a lot of tools.

I like Spybot Search and Destroy. Keep it updated.

If you have serious problems try Combo Fix. It is a serious tool with possible side effects but it will work were nothing else will.

Do you update manually? Unpatched machines are why Code Red, Storm and similar spread so quickly.

I have wireless. I pay for 12Mbps, but typically get between 5-7 when I test there.

I don't use my XP box much anymore for any thing other then a media server really so I don't have to worry about infection really.

And yes, lols, get a mac it might be more expensive but I find them to be a lot easier in general. (In before the linux/M$ flame war)

Another vote for Malwarebytes. If you use the free version, just make sure to manually update it before each scan.

MS Security Essentials is the best anti virus out there now IMO. Combo Fix is vary good but use it as a last resort. Last time I used it on my wife’s laptop it killed her VPN connection to her work.

Are you running any anti virus and anti malware programs now? It sounds like you may have some programs running in the background taking up resources. Have you installed any new programs lately?

Download MS Security Essentials and Malwarebyts and see if that takes care of the problem. If not then start turning off programs that are running in the background.

SUPERAntiSpyware and Spybot Search and Destroy will only get rid of so much. I'd recommend this if you have a serious or problematic infection:
ComboFix (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

Save it to your Windows Desktop and run. If it starts and them immediately closes, there is logic in the virus that's infected your computer that's closing it. Rename it to something like 'awesome.exe' and then run it again. If it still doesn't run shut down your computer, and then as soon as it starts booting up keep pressing F8 on keyboard until boot options appear. Choose Windows Safe Mode, and then once it has started up in Safe Mode run ComboFix again. It will take 5-30 minutes to run, but then it's problem solved.

I use the free version of Ad-Aware and Spyblaster. Works very well.

I third Malwarebytes. I've used most of the halfway decent programs out there and MB seems to be about the most effective free one. The best way to do it is run virtual machines on a system (use something like Ubuntu for a net use VM) and make a few clone VM's, so if anything gets infected just kill that VM and run one of the clones, wash, rinse, and repeat. ;) That's a bit beyond the scope of this thread though.

Malwarebytes is the best free one.
AVG or Avast are as good as the paid products unless you can run the business versions.

Are you running XP? There is a bug of some sort on a fully patched XP system which does the same thing. Short, sharp ,regular "freezes". I can't find the cause but it's on mutiple systems and others also report it. I think it's a lot more common than I see but most users simply don't realise it's happening.
Only fix is a reinstall.
IF you have checked EVERYTHING else.....

Yes, there is some spyware/ malware shit on your machine.

Hey Jonny,
After spending way over $200.00 on a few different Spyware/ Malware programs in the last 7-8 months these are the three best tools that I found.

1. Avast (Free Version available)

2. CCleaner (Free)

3. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ($24.95)

I had a few things on my PC (XP Windows) and these took everthing off and my computer is running super fast with no issues. If you have Microsoft Internet Explorer I would SERIOUSLY consider switching over to MOZILLA FireFox. IE opens you up to a far greater number of problems.

Also, if you Bank online or send sensitive communications, then you may want to consider having a Firewall enabled on your system as well.

Good Luck,
SkiDevil

P.S. Here is a link to get you started. There are reviews from professionals there to so you can verify what system/ tool is best for your needs. Double check yourself, as I are NOT a computer guy. I did bounce my choices off a friend who is a paid professional computer engineer/ designer and he said for my limited needs (e-mail, internet surfing -no online banking etc.), my choices were fine.

I am sure this has already been mentioned but make sure whatever spyware cleaner you use is updated and scan in SAFE MODE.
