So, I think im going to want a sling for my AR when i get it ordered/built but Im terribly familiar with them and need some guidance. The rifle, for now, is not going to be used for self defense/duty related jobs. Just range use, varmint hunting, and then maybe 3-gun (I may get a new upper for this). Prolly not looking for a sling for 3gun, but for hunting trips, etc Im gonna want to be able to throw it over my shoulder.

Which would be a better setup for me? Specific recommendations?

Thanks!!

I like the two point from blue force.

Even a USGI sling would be better than no sling. "If you can't sling it. Don't bring it."

I tried single-point. It works great on SBR's and SMG's. As I am only 5'9" I found single-points a bit of a challenge on a 14.5 or longer barreled rifle. I tried the MS-2 as alternative to bungee single points due to the flexibility to transition to two-point before abandoning that too in favor of the Viking Tactics two-point sling. I think you'll be quite happy with either the Viking Tactics or the Blue Force as they are very similar.

+1 for the Vickers CA two point sling. I used it on my last deployment and it worked great. Slung tight when using my hands or climbing, etc. Loose when using my weapon. Gets it out of the way quickly when you need to take care of an EPW or work on a casualty. Doesn't hit you in the thigh like a one point sling.

I like the BFG VCAS or if you want to spend a little less get the Victory model. Same sling without all the bells and whistles.

IMO, the 2-pt is the most versatile and if you're hunting you can shoulder sling it just like a normal hunting sling.

Like USMC03's linked article, he followed the same progression most of the "tactical" shooting community did, from 3-point, to 1-point, to 2-point. However I think the current trend towards 1-to-2-point convertible slings is where it's at. The most commonly known of these is the Magpul MS2, but I was not happy with my sample so I modified a BFG Vickers sling (http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=33734&highlight=vickers) to get the same functionality in what I find to be a MUCH better package. I like my hardware better, I like the BFG material and stock hardware better, I like the adjustment better... it just addresses every reservation I had about the MS2 and improves or eliminates it.

My preference these days on all but bloated carbines is the convertible. On my full 16" guns with optics, lights, rails, etc. I am still using the unmodified BFG Vickers in both padded and un-padded varieties, but I'm working my way towards making the change/adaptation on all of my slings, and the hesitation has more to do with the fact that I just plain don't shoot these guns much these days. IMHO my BFG convertible offers me the best of both worlds for my needs and in my use with zero compromises.

I've used 1 point, 2 point and 3 point slings...3 point are a hassle and therefore suck. I am currently using an Israeli 2 point I picked up while in Israel and I absolutely love it. It's back to basics, no complicated straps or hook point...If you're interested, I can get them pretty cheap...Here's a picture to give you an idea.
