Went out today with the bolt gun and AR10, using a box of Federal GMM and a box of BH match 168's. The 10 had a silencer on it.

First two rounds of BH in the bolt gun failed to fire. These were the first two rounds of the day and I thought maybe my bolt gun somehow got messed with. The primer indents were meh, but should have gone off. Put 10 quick rounds of Federal GMM through it (center target) without problems. Moved onto the AR10 and started with the BH ammo. It was hot, four rounds and all were high on target (different target, no pic) then had a malfunction. The primer from round 3 had popped and wedged in the chamber with the new round. Tough to get out.... Moved to Federal with the AR10 and shot the upper left group. Back to BH with the 10 and shot the upper right group, popping several more primers in the process and throwing brass pretty far. Had ejector flow on some and decided to stop firing that shit....

I bought this ammo several years ago and as far as I can remember it's been stored at room temperature in the house. Any ideas on what might be wrong or did I simply get a hot batch of ammo?

They never got back to me on the rounds I sent back to them, but I had something similar from some of their match ammo in a Noveske AR-10 upper. Popped the primers, and locked the gun two or three times.

Works great in my 308 bolt guns though, and I haven't had the problem since that batch of four boxes.

I have had this sort of problem with hotter handloads that sat for a loong time...I checked into it with the benchrest crowd and most others who dealt with this described it as some sort of adhesion from the neck to the bullet & was tied to sitting for a period of time. ALL the guns I experienced this with were tight neck custom bolt rigs. Mine included:

6ppc .262neck
6br .262 neck
280ai .311 neck

My fix was pretty easy for the balance of the ammo. I simply adjusted the seating die to push the pill a bit further into the case and you could clearly feel it snapping loose.

Interstingly, it happened with both moly coated and nekid bullets.

Anyway, I have no idea if this has anything to do w/ your situation as I never heard of it w/ factory / saami ammo. Heck, there are guys shooting 50yr old surplus.

fwiw...
