This year I had the pleasure of building a prize gun for the up coming Single Stack Classic. As with years past the base gun provided for the project was one of the fantastic Springfield Armory “gun kits” which, as many of you already know, is basically a frame and a slide with some assorted small parts. The oversized kit makes it a pretty fun build... I certainly wouldn’t mind having a few more of these to whittle away on (that’s a hint in case you’re reading this Dave :p ).

I wanted to build a gun that I thought epitomized the best blend of the traditional and the contemporary 1911. For me that meant classic touches like hand-cut 30lpi checkering front and rear, bordered slide, short trigger, Kart barrel with match bushing, and a two-tone finish of polished blue over matte hard chrome. All of the other “usual stuff” like a flattened and serrated slide top in the curved arrow pattern, reliability tune, Ed Brown extended thumb safety, S&A grip safety, Nowlin mag catch, Yo-Bo action components, etc. was mixed in as well and I topped the whole thing off with a gold line front sight and one of our Professional Grade rear sights... classic and contemporary. Toss in a classically styled Bulman rig for the photos just to continue the theme and... well you get the picture... ;) enjoy!

Looks pretty good. What would something like that go for?

I'll speculate that the example in the photos will cost whatever it takes to beat Rob Leatham (i.e. get first place and go to the prize table first) at this year's Single Stack Classic. :D

I'm hoping my buddy Tony H will do it this year (he's been third a few times). If he gets to bring that pistol home, I might get to fondle it! :D

BTW ... nice work, Jason. I especially like your choice of the short trigger.

My money is on Dave Sevigny. Last year Dave won Limited at the USPSA Natl's using a Glock 35, it's only upgrades were a trigger job, sights and a magwell. As they say "It's the Indian not the arrow".

Beautiful pistol Jason, congratulations on the fine work of art. The winner will be a lucky individual. I hope he or she can appreciate your effort.

As for needing to be the match winner to win this gun, well it's not really necessary. A friend of mine was one of the top finishers who was allowed to go up to the prize table. A pleasant surprise was waiting for him, as last year's match winner (some guy named Leatham) and a few others picked other guns. My friend chose a gun that Jason is very familiar with :), a gun that many of us considered to be one of the finest offered at that match.

So pretty...

Beautiful craftsmanship. I like the simple elegance of it.

Staring at the checkering on the frontstrap is kind of hypnotic!

Not a bad choice but my darkhorse to finally unseat Leatham would be Taran Butler. At last years match his ammo just missed making major and even handicapped with 164.9 pf "minor" ammo he still managed to come in fourth.

Besides every year Rob wins and every year he picks one of Dick's guns from the prize table. Last year IIRC, pistolsmith savant John Harrison won the YoBo prize gun. Ironic, don't you think.....

If I were betting, I'd bet on Leatham. He owns the Single Stack Classic, and for good reason.

Still, I will back Tony Hawkins. He's been third 2-3 times and he's due to bust a move!

Here are the top 10 from last year:
