I just purchased a new Colt LE6920. I have been lusting after moving to the AR world for a while...I shoot mostly handguns. I have a few quick questions...

1. It has a 1 to 7" twist so I know it is for heavier grain ammo but what is a good cost effective ammo that I can use for practice/comps?

2. Are Magpul magazines as good as the guy at the store said? Are they better than the standard Colt stuff?

I am sure there will be more as I dive deeper into this branch of shooting. Thanks!

1. surplus 55gr FMJ ammo will serve you well for practice/plinking. Wolf are dirty as hell and not that accurate but are GTG too.
2. USGI aluminum mags are fine but Magpul PMAGs are way better

1/7 will shoot 55 grain ammunition fine. It is the cheapest, but still effective and accurate with your weapon. I buy military surplus 55 grain, M193 ball. If you move to heavier ammunition, you will have to re-zero.

Colt mags are fine. PMags have a great rep. I have used mil-spec mags for years, no problem. I just purchased my first PMags last week, so I have no experience, but again, they have an outstanding reputation.

The LE6920 is a great purchase!

Standby. You will no doubt be hearing from Coolbreeze anytime now. The 6920 is his "domaine de spécialisation", good thing you didn't get a 6940 or he would be pi$$ing directly in your ear right now.

My 2 cents.
I love Colt, I just bought a 6940 2 weeks ago in NH. I love it. I just finished dressing her up.

Also, whatever you do, don't put a Magpul AFG grip on it, or Coolbreeze will pi$$ in your other ear.

Look forward to some pictures.

All I have anymore are Magpul Mags (well I have a few Lancer 20's and 30's too, but they are just for the range)

55gr is fine, I shoot mostly .55gr Privi and some Centurion. If you are looking for a good source, hit up Bryan at www.aimsurplus.com

Welcome to the black rifle club. This is where the disease begins.

and surplus XM193 is?

I don't really notice a difference myself accuracy-wise between Fed or Prvi XM193 and Wolf 55, but plenty of people here who are much better shots than I have commented that they find the Wolf to actually be MORE accurate (if only slightly).

Either way, as long as your gun runs well with it, those are good choices for practice ammo.

PMAGs and Lancer L5s are where it's at for mags right now. USGI Aluminum mags, when paired with Magpul anti-tilt followers (which are about $1 apiece) run well and are reliable, but have nowhere near the ability to withstand abuse as the PMAGs and L5s. That, in my opinion is really the difference - if you baby your mags you'll get equivalent reliability, if you're rough on em you really should switch PMAGs or L5s.

I personally run PMAGs because I like the way they feel and the way they look.

For my first 15 years of AR15 shooting with 1-7 twist barrels I always used 55gr for casual shooting and handloads for longer range and more accuracy. Now I use the 62 gr Nato Winchester green tip ammo. I couldn't believe how much more accurate it shot with all my rifles over the crap M193 I was so in love with all these years. One day I pulled out my trusty 20"Colt model 6551 with A2 sights and shot 10- 5 shot groups with the 62gr nato ammo. I was getting close to 2" groups with open sights at 100 yards from a sandbag rest. M193 Federal and clone ammo never was close to that for me. I could hit a clay bird(around 5" at 100) which was fine but it was no where near the 62gr stuff. Look around and you can find some good bulk ammo deals for quality 62gr FMJ, I found 1000 rounds for $400.00 last year.
