I just purchased one of BCM's Mid Length Uppers for an AR I'm building. http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BCM%2DURG%2DMID%2D16+BFH+DDL12 A question for guys running this upper with a heavy buffer. Are you able to run .223 (cheap 55gr.fmj) through it reliably or is 5.56 a must? Just curious, I've heard some guys having issues with mid length gas systems with non 5.56 ammo.

You should have no problems running .223 through a mid-length, mine shoots pretty much 98% .223 ammo and runs fine.

I recieved mine Friday from GandR, I got to run her today 300 silver bear 62 gr hp, 100 Hornady 55gr sp, and 100 partisan 75 gr mhp, all was loaded to 223 spec (I think) and no hiccups with an H buffer.

my old CMMG middy ran EVERYTHING.
it's a great system.
i made some real light loads with fast powder, and even that worked, there was just a noticeable delay between the shot firing and the carrier cycling :D still locked the bolt back even.

granted there's less gas pressure, but thanks to the longer dwell the brass has more time to contract so it's easier for the rifle to extract it.

No issues. I have a 16" BCM middy and I use a Spike's Tactical ST-T2 heavy buffer and Tubbs Flat-wire buffer spring with zero issues on el-cheapo .223 practice stuff. The beauty of the middy is that they are MUCH more forgiving regarding ammo type (and strength). Enjoy your middy. :)
