Newbie to forum and the M4

First hello to all. I am new here and to the world of M4 rifle. I am a complete newbie here. I was all so close to purchasing a Bushmaster M4 until I started asking questions on another forum which lead me here. What is the general opinion on Bushmaster? I am been looking at the LMT and Daniel Defense but, don't know if Daniel Defense has a post ban model yea I live in New Jersey:rolleyes: LMT has one. I like the Bushmaster configuration they call it the M4-A3. It has the picatinny rail for a scope. I eventually want a scope on it. I eventually will venture to build my own but, for now am looking for the best complete rifle for the money. I have seen the charts and am looking for opinions. I can get the Bushmaster for $900; I will go to $1050. All recommendations are welcome. Thanks

Dude, my first three ARs were Bushmasters. Now I own zero, and I'll never own another one again.

In the price range you're working with, your best bets are BCM and S&W.

Bushmaster not what it once was. I am sure they still make an OK rifle, depending on your use, but the reality is, you have options in top tier ARs for only a little more money. I plan on having the guns I like for many years, so the $ per year doesn't mean as much to me as having a great rifle I can depend on.

Hi welcome to the forum. I'm pretty new here myself but I'll try to help with your question. It seems like a lot of people price themselves just out of reach of the good quality AR's. If you only have $1050 you only have $1050, but if you can afford a little more the Daniel Defense and BCM 16" middies are a better deal when you factor in quality. I've read that S&W is starting to put out a really good rifle too. Read the stickies and figure out exactly what you want in terms of barrel length, rail system etc. before you make the plunge.

And to just to point out, BCM sells complete lowers for $350...heck of a deal in itself. Or, the DD ones in a close by thread looks awesome too.

The Daniel Defense is where I am leaning but, I am a prisioner in the 3rd world country called New Jersey and need a compliant rifle. I don't see on their webpage that they make a compliant rilfle. Hopfully they do. How about LMT I know they make a compliant rifle. The LMT and Daniel Defense have the same suggested retail as the Bushmaster so I don't think I am to far off with the $1050.

Ha. I just took a look at the NJ Atty General's guidelines, wherein he attempted to put a fig leaf over a patently ridiculous assertion that 'substantially identical' firearms to those on the "list" are banned. As 'substantially identical' is just as contradictory or nonsensical as "partially pregnant" or "a number which is substantially ten," the NJAG decided to incorporate language from the now-defunct federal "AW" ban.

That being said, njsportsman will have to lose a bayo lug and barrel threads/flash suppressor to be compliant. Also, he will have to get his Aero from Pennsylvania (i.e., out-of-state). This may require quite a wait, unless the manufacturers have something n stock (not always the case).

(I once saw "Super Dave" Harrington holding his hands over a muzzle flash in Massachusetts on a cold day; yes, he was joking.) njsportsman may consider doing the following:

(a) Order a regular BCM upper BEFORE getting a lower (it is not a 'firearm' under NJ law (?).
(b) Send the upper to a gunsmith or ADCO to have the offending suppressor removed and permanently install a compliant muzzle brake or similar device.
(c) Order the lower and/or parts kits.
(d) Mate the lower to the upper and go shooting.

Yep, it's more costly, but perhaps it will be cheaper and faster in the long run. Should njsportsman decide to get a compliant version and install a muzzle device later, he will have to have the barrel threaded (an additional expense).

What I plan to do is get a LMT or DD. Then buying a barrel, 30rd clips and collapsible stock about $300-400 for when I move back to the USA. Yes it's an extra expense but, whatever gun I buy I will have this expense.

I am very much in the same boat as yourself, but the laws in Mass are a bit different. If there is a way, I would simply bypass the "AW ban" by buying a grandfathered carbine and working from there, but I am not sure that is possible n NJ.

Did you mean buying a LMT of DD lower receiver, and then a barrel? I don't really understand. :confused:

No I don't think it is. They change and makeup the laws as they go. At least it seems that way.


Did you mean buying a LMT of DD lower receiver, and then a barrel? I don't really understand. :confused:

No I am going to buy an already made gun like the LMT COMP16 for example and buying the stock and barrel that would go with the LMT STD16. Which are the same exact guns with the exceptions of the collapsible stock and the barrel with the threaded muzzle with bayonet lug and 30rd mags? Don't care about the bayonet lug but, it'll come with the new barrel.
