View Full Version : .45 ACP - Does it Exist?

Okay, normally I score my range ammo at Wal*Mart or Dick's, but this is ridiculous.

I haven't seen .45 ACP at any of the 5 'Marts in my area, and I was laughed at when asking about it at Dick's last week.

Am I missing something? My dad just picked up 600 rounds of 9mm at Wal*Mart without even getting excited.

WTF, over?

.45 is hit or miss in my area...sometimes they have some times they dont.....Just depends on how lucky you are that day...

What are you paying up that way for the 100ct winchester whitebox??

I know our wally's had some a few months ago...I can check this weekend if you want. Friggin shipping them up there would be murder from down here though.

around $37-38 (before tax for WWB 100 round)
When they have hit WWB JHP 100 round are usually $48 (generally about $10 more)

I scored some Federal 9mm at Walmart about 2 mos. ago. Around here, SoCal., you have to just be in the right place at the right time to score. People that keep track of the Walmart ammo shipments get there early and wipe them out. I have a couple of gun stores here that have Fiocchi 45 acp, brass case 230 gr. FMJ for 21.95 pretty much every time I have gone in. That's about as good as it gets here.

Start reloading. Thats about the only way I have been able to constantly shoot it. Having 1000 rounds loaded with components for about 10k more is a very comforting feeling.

Most definitely.......it is the only way I can afford it, I almost never shoot factory ammo in my 9 & 45, most of my shooting is combat type matches.

Lucky bastard!

'Round here the WWB is going for ~$39.00 at the 'Mart and ~$50.00 at Dick's.

I mean, I haven't even seen JHPs...

About a year ago, I ran across a deal on Sportsmans Guide for 20rd boxes of Hornady TAP 230g ammo for $14/box. Needless to say, I bought 20 boxes.

I've also been ordering WWB .45 from them in 500 lots. Up until this last order, which is back ordered until July, I was getting them in about 10 days for way better than Wal-Mart. I've got enough for the Magpul class and for a few more training sessions, but after that, I'll be back on the hunt for more. Almost all my ammo has been bought online over the past 3 years. It's just easier than hunting it down and cheaper than the rip off artists at most shops around here.

What is the new price for 50rnd WWB at Wally World now. Gander Mountian has WWB for $30/box!

Needed some for an upcoming class so I got some Federal from Palmetto and some WWB from AmmuntionToGo. They had some Hornady 5.56 75gr loads too ;)

I was at a Walmart last week where he was just unloading from the truck. WWB was $33.00 and hollow point was $40.00... was at agun store, same price on theirs and they had maybe 30 boxes...

I agree about reloading.

I can load 230 grain lead round nose for less than $100 per thousand. It takes a little more effort to clean the gun but the savings is well worth the effort.

I bought six 100 rd. 9mm WWB for 20.97 a piece a week ago. Though it's not always on the shelf, between the four Wal-marts in my area I have been able to get a decent supply of 9mm. I don't see .45 as much and don't shoot a lot of it, but if I see it I'll usually pick up a box or so, at 31.00 bucks.

Haven't seen anything decent at Wally since last Fall, local Bass Pro just started getting some handgun ammo on the shelves. I don't remember exact prices, not outragous, but a little more than in the past.
I reload my own .45 ACP and LC, .38 and .44, but like to keep some factory stuff on hand too!
Good luck.................

I called one of my local gun stores and asked if they had .45 ammo. They said yes, but the limit was 5 boxes at a time. I made the mistake of not asking what it cost and went there and bought three boxes at $32.50 a box!!! Ouch.

I'll tell you where to find .45 if you tell me where to find 9mm ;)

I shit ye not: I was at Wal*Mart looking for some sort of tackle/storage box for spare parts, and curiously went by the ammo section.

I counted 58 boxes of 50-round 9mm. 2900 f'in rounds. Not a .45 in the place.

What's boggling my mind is that I've always thought 9mm was more common than .45.

Your best bet is to reload. I cast my own bullets and save even more. Love the shooter that leave their brass on the ground that also saves me money.

I also load steel cases from Wolf. use them as my throw away cases if I am out where the grass is tall. Have over 1K of loaded 45 ACP, 1.3K 5.56 etc, 06 500, 38 Spl. over 2K, etc

When winter comes it's reloading time.:D

Haven't seen .45 WWB in a WalMart in a very long time. Fortunately, I started reloading my own 230g fmj when this dry spell started. At $17 per 100, its like paying yourself $50 an hour to pull a handle.

P.S.

I've been searching for .45 for about 2 months now. I just can't find a price I'm happy with. I'm not paying over 20 bucks for target ammo. I just can't

This may be the straw that get's me into reloading. I should be doing it anyways by now.....

I picked up a case of 9mm for around 250 at the local gun store the other week, but I'm down to half a box of .45. Very very sad.

DO IT!! I've been reloading for 28 yrs.. Right now I have 500rnds of .45 ready to go with about 1000 more cases waiting,I don't have a shortage of .45. The last time I figured it up, I'm loading a box of 45acp for $7-8 .45 is very easy to load, and there are endless bullet/powder combo's to try..The price of quality reloading equiptment will be quickly recouped with the savings made possible by loading your own..

markm
04-28-10, 22:26

All of you people that don't reload sure like to waste money!!!!!
The only cost I have is 3.2 cents for the primer and about 3 to 5 cents for powder. The lead is free if you cast your own. Most of the brass I have I picked up at the range. Also you can reload Wolf steel cases if it has one flash hole I use the wolf case ammo when I am in an area that I will lose brass due to tall grass or rocks. :D

04-30-10, 13:32
It's not about being able to afford the ammo, it's a waste of money when you shoot the gun and throw away the brass. Brass is about 1/2 the cost of a box of ammo. Some of the posters are buying 20 boxes of 45 ACP at $35+ for a box of ammo that's $700 dollars. For that kind of money you can setup one fantastic reloading setup!!!! Just due the math.
When I started reloading in 1958 ammo was cheaper than today but wages where low. It was still the cost factor as it is today! So reload and shoot more and not worry about finding ammo when it's scarce.

My local WalMart stocks WWB (Pistol), UMC bulk (Pistol), and Federal (Rifle). I buy 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, 380 Auto, 308, and 223. The UMC 250 round bulk goes the quickest. The WWB is generally in stock short of the 380. They seem to have the 100 round 223 in stock most of the time.

The key is to get to know the clerk that has the ammo delivery lists. They tell me when stuff is coming in so I can plan accordingly.

I think I will have to start reloading again. Back about 40 years ago I was reloading .30-06 for my rifle, then got married and started to raise a family. The only thing I had to buy was a carton of large pistol primers for my 45 ACP, 45 colt & 44 mag. They were in stock at several places. I had on hand lots of powder so I had no problem. Powder was in short supply for a short time but now everybody has powder.

I cast my own bullets for my all my pistols so thats not a problem. I have so much loaded ammo on hand that I would not have to load any for a while. The ony problem is I hate to see an empty case sitting there.

05-01-10, 08:32

Not at all. Cabelas here has plated, cast, and FMJ 45 bullets every time I've been in there for the past few weeks.

I've picked up a pound of HP-38 on two of my trips. They had W231 on the shelf last time too.

They haven't had a big selection of Primers, but those are easy to get on the web if you're buying enough to pay the hazmat.

Wait times are much shorter than they were six months ago. I've had backorders for LP primers from Powder Valley and .45 FMJ from Roze Distribution over the past year. Last week, I received a primer order from two months ago and a bullet order from three weeks ago. Primers are starting to show up at my local gun shop, and they've always had powder in stock whenever I needed it.

I was out today, coming back from 5 wal marts, no fmj 45acp at all. haven't seen any for about 2 weeks now.

Oh....but they're stacked DEEP with 9mm and 40sw federal and WWB, but no 45 at all. Only self defense ammo, boxes of 20rds.

For no reason, they have unpopular calibers that never move off the shelf like 25acp, 32acp, FREAKING WWB 357 SIG WTF-OVER?,.............but no fmj 45acp.

I don't understand how the ammo industry works. How can you not supply something like 45acp, a 100+ year American round?

Or maybe they try their best, and just can't meet demand? I don't know I'm just mumbling now.

Bad enough a box at wal mart costs $17 after tax, but the fact 99% of the time, even on supply day, it's not on the shelves! That's the irritating part, that fact that they never have them on the shelves.

You know what an employee(or manager, different uniform) told me? He said sometimes certain wal mart stores won't get ANY 45acp fmj from the distribution center because there simply isn't enough to go around. Holy crap.

I think my 45 has to go.

It felt tedious only watching. Also it seems like if the only thing you want to do is operate the handle manually, you have to buy bullet feeders, case feeders, etc ,etc ,etc, and maybe other things that I don't know the names of. That's alot of $$$.

I'd rather have Federal Cartridge, Tula Cartridge Works, And Winchester Ammunition do all that work for me.

Seems like buying the ammo components separately doesn't save you a dime. The only part you're saving money on is the brass casing because it can be reused. Correct me if I'm wrong.

YEs, you are wrong. The component cost is significantly less than the ammo costs in most cases. However, your equipment investment and time investment is not factored into the final per round cost. If you don't load a lot, it takes a long time to make up the equipment investment cost.

Most people find they don't save money reloading -- they just shoot a lot more for the same money :)

maybe, maybe not.

All I know is that 45acp is only shipped to certain wal marts during each 2 weeks to a month and it doesn't last a day on the shelf. 9mm and 40sw can be had at any wal mart, any time.

I've been looking at internet prices too. 9 and 40 have dropped continuously this year. 45 has not.

Expect to pay about a 35cent a round average for 45acp

40sw has dropped a good nickel or more per round and about a 27cent average, but vendors are selling lower than that.

9mm is king at 20 cents a round AND LOWER.

Bottom line? 45acp is the first of the three major pistol rounds to be affected by economical stress and material shortages, and the last one to recover.

I saw bulk .38Sp, .40 and 9mm at the last gun show, but not a lot of non-premium .45. They had some, but it was rude expensive. I picked up a case of Blazer 9mm for $157, though.

I bought some .45acp at my local gunstore last week. $22.50 a box.

All I know is that 45acp is only shipped to certain wal marts during each 2 weeks to a month and it doesn't last a day on the shelf. 9mm and 40sw can be had at any wal mart, any time.

Locally, all the stores around here get it every week, either monday or tuesday. By thursday they are out and the cycle repeats. If you show up monday or tuesday depending on shipment you get 6 boxes, bring a wife and get 12. While the price and amounts of rounds they get may very, I never really wanted for it, Ever. Sure sometimes there has been less then I wanted, but I have always had some. Lately, we have had more then usual and I can come in and get a few boxes of Fed and wwb whenever. If you search around, you probably have a few walmarts around, although you may have to travel. At times I have driven 40min to get a few boxes, I guess it never really bothered me. I only shoot .45 so what choice do I have.

Ammoseek has cci blazer for 14ish a box from two different sites after shipping your not too bad off. Luckygunner and GA and a few other site have always had pretty cheap .45 (bulk). Sometimes you may have to wait a week or two for it though. I don't think, at least lately, prices or quantity have been bad. When our president was first elected it was a bit hairy, but now I think things are trending in a better direction. Ammo is not as hard to find, exotic ammo aside, and prices are better then before YYMMV. It's going to get better, Change the change 2012 :p

I went to Dick's the other day and saw some 250 round UMC mega packs and 2 individual boxes of American Eagle. I had to resist the overwelming urge to buy it all. I felt like a starved fat kid being cut loose at a KFC. I don't have that kind of money though so I took a mega pack and a box of Fed. 300 rounds even. While they didn't have as much of it as they had 9mm and .40, they did have more .45 than I have seen in a while in one place, so it looks like it might slowly be coming out of hibernation around here.

I sure am getting tired of the cry baby's who can't find ammo of such & such caliber!!

Reloading is the answer, I keep on shooting in all the guns I own and will keep shooting no matter what the government does or doesn't do.

They tried to ban ammo through the EPA! I can cast my own lead bullets, so they can kiss my butt and some laws or regulations are meant to be ignored!!
