Arsenal SLR 105

Thanks to the threads here and some help from Templar, I purchased the above AK.
I won an auction on Gunbroker, got it for 670 + 30 s&h + 15 for the transfer. It was described as new with no box, and it certainly looks that way. It came w/13 magazines.

Now the questions:

6 of the mags are brown, with 1-1 on the left side and circled 21 on the right
7 of teh mags are black with various numbers on the left 1-1, 3, 2 and 4 and adouble circle 10 on the right.
Any ideas/comments on these?

The entire gun is an even flat black, including the ak brake, the front sight is aglossy black, like paint. Any ideas, not concerned with looks, just don't want some cobbled together stuff.

It caomes with the NATO length stock, so now I will get a standard lenght from K-var. I've heard it is possible to convert it to a side folder, with the skelotonized, triangular stock, but this would entail some serious work, correct? and who could do the work, same with adding the reciever optics rail?
I've also seen a polymer non-folding skeloton stock, that would admitedly be for looks only, anyone seen this or no the LOP of it?

I will probably just get a case of Wolf, 'cause I don't want to deal with the corrosive ammo.
My main purpose for this rifle is to maintain some skilld with the AK type, so most of the above is just something to think about right now.

Congratulations!

You'll really like the little 5.45mm round, it's flat shooting and low pressure compared to the 5.56mm.

The magazines you got are all Bulgarian military mags. The Bulgarians have several different colored mags, but they all run the same and are all just as reliable as the next. Bulgarian mags can run from tan, firebrick red, black, and chocolate colored. It basically depended on what dye they had in stock at the time.

The Double Circle 10 mags are Arsenal Bulgaria. You'll also see Circle 21 and 25, they are military contract mags, still Bulgarian. None are really better than the other.

It does take some work to convert to a triangular steel side folder, to turn it into an AKS-74. Lots of machine work, most smiths will charge about $250 or so to do the work.

If you want a decent job and a decent turn around, Will at Red Jacket can do the work.

Glen Riddle at Magnum Gunsmithing, Mario at Piece of History Firearms, Troy Sellars at InRange, Mike Friend at The Firing Line, there are good smiths out there.

Is your rifle a SLR-105 or a SLR-105A1?

The finish on the rifle will not hold up to US commercial gun cleaning solvents well, like Hoppes #9 or Shooter's Choice. Break Free, FP-10, and good 'ol Ballistol are fine though.

If you're going to turn it into an AKS-74, go ahead and have whoever does the work refinish the rifle while they're at it.

I case anyone is wondering.........

I finally got to shoot it today. 300 rounds of Wolf military classic 70 grain. No problems. Didn't do much, just some drills, as I don't have the tool to adjust the sight's.

I will have to work on the mag changes, as I jammed a few up good in the reciever. The safety is way to stiff. And, I definately need the shorter stock.

I used a HK type hook and some 1" tubular nylon to make a 2pt sling.

Overall, nice little gun, low recoil, fast follow ups, etc. Don't think it will replace my 6920 though.

its an SLR 105, don't know the difference between it and the a1.

The A1 has the AK-74 threaded front sight base installed along with the AK-74 brake. The standard SLR-105 has a non threaded front sight/muzzle.

The receivers aren't marked any differently, since all the A1's are modified 105's.

Definitely invest in a front sight tool, a good one is worth it's weight in gold.

OK, well mine has the '74 brake on it.

Just looked at K-var and the elevation tool is sold out.

Know of anywhere else I can get the tool and a manual.

The manual is no biggie, call Arsenal and they should send you one out. If you have the issue cleaning kit, you already have an elevation tool in the suppository thing. It slips over the front sight post and allows you to turn it in to elevate the poi or to raise the front sight post to lower your poi.

There is a "c" clamp style sight adjustment tool that you should get. Cope's Distributing has them for something like $9.00, all the way down near the bottom of the page.

To Templar's comments, let me add that the numbers on the left side are "mold numbers" and have no real significance in terms of quality or identification. The number/marking on the right is the "arsenal mark" and identifies who manufactured the mag. Code 10 represents Arsenal Bulgaria and Code 25 represents Optico-Electron. Code 21 may indicate a different factory operated by Arsenal, or a third party entirely. Most of the color variations other than black (firebrick red, saddle tan, brown, plum) appear to be of the Code 21 variety.

I have a 105 and would like to put the Muzzle Brake assy. on it. The previous onwner buggered up the sight assy. trying to get it off and the two pin's that hold it on are missing. Can you recommend anyone that can put the Bulgy MB assy I have on, correctly?
