View Full Version : Discrete ammo carriage

As I'm sure a lot of you do, I keep ammo in surplus GI ammo cans of one variety or another. I like this system as it's air tight for long-term storage but also easy to grab and go to head off to the range with. However a few recent events has me wanting something a bit less obvious. Yes, lots of people use ammo cans to store lots of other things. I see them all the time at the jobsite and don't think "gun!" when I see them in that context, but couple the can with a long "discrete" case and it becomes more obvious what you are toting.

I was thinking of going with some canvas tool bags, but I see three potential problems. The first is that obviously this offers no air-tight seal. The second is that I'm unsure if they are structurally sound enough to hold. The third is that they are not stackable or as easily storable at home. I'm thinking of addressing these issues a few ways, from keeping the ammo in the bag in ziplocks for long term, to continuing to use the ammo cans at home for long-term storage and just keeping one range-bag full, fed from the ammo cans, for leaving the house with.

Any other ideas or thoughts?

I use this one on a regular basis - very tough; with 2K of 9mm the bag still retains it shape and plenty of room left over.

I use ammo cans for storing a number of things, but especially ammo. Living in an urban environment in close proximity to neighbors, walking out with an ammo can can mean anything...but combine that with a long/narrow case (even though all of my cases are "discrete", e.g. Sneaky Bag) and it shouts "going to the range".

My solution...
Ammo cans for long term storage, canvas tool bags for trips to the range.

I also have one large ammo can labeled "ready use". Any ammo that returns from a trip to the range (Some days I just don't "have it", and decide to pack it in early rather than burn down more ammo when I'm obviously having a bad day, or the wind is blowing too hard and I'm trying for accuracy) goes into the "ready use" can, and that's the first that I pull from for the next range day.

The idea (and it works for me) is that I open most of my ammo cans as little as possible, and the ammo that I do transfer to the tool bags is most likely going to get used...if not on the current trip, then shortly thereafter.

In my line of work, we use ammo cans for truss bolts and tools. Everything smaller and sensitive to moisture goes into pelican cases. Will last a lifetime, have any size you can imagine, and can be locked securely. Also have the added benifit of not looking scary when toting through the hotel lobby like a couple ammo cans and a "guitar case"

Go to your local Home Depot and get you one of these... http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5/R-100087613/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Don't forget the lid.

Air tight, water tight, inexpensive, and highly inconspicuous...anything designed to carry 5 gallons of paint around sure can hold alot of ammo.

I've been using my maxpedition versipack and a toolbox when I go to the range. To the untrained eye I just look like a contractor. A big husky tool box could fit the bill.

That's not a bad suggestion, except that I don't know that I'd want to be trying to drag around 5 gallons of ammo. Might slip a disk!

I do recall they sell other sizes though so it might be worth a look.

All because you can fill it with 5 gallons worth of ammo doesn't mean you have to, lol! :D I'm sure if you were to put say 1K rounds of 9mm left in the boxes in it that it wouldn't be anymore cumbersome than an ammo can filled with the same amount.

No, I just wouldn't want to deal with the added bulk for no reason. I'm pretty sure I've seen shorter ones there before that might make more sense.

If they don't I'm sure Lowe's or your local Ace Hardware will have them.

What about a basic cheapo tool box?
Something like this (http://www.lowes.com/pd_174828-355-016011R_0_?productId=3017739&Ntt=tool%20box&Ntk=i_products&pl=1&currentURL=/pl__0__s?newSearch=true$Ntt=tool%20box$y=0$x=0)

Big enough to hold enough ammo for a range trip, small enough to be portable and not get overloaded. Completely inconspicuous unless you're moving 10 of them around at a time.

If the solution I find isn't air-tight (meaning I have to dump the ammo from my home storage containers into my transport containers) I'm going to want as close as possible a 1:1 of can size:transport size. The boxes I use now are

30 cal 10.5 x 4" x 7": 500 rounds 5.56, 1,000 rounds 9mm
50 cal 12" x 6" x 7.5": not used much as I prefer the...
SAW 12" x 7" x 8.5": loaded AR mags

I use the 30 cal cans more than anything else by far, which is why I'm liking the TT covers so much. I'm going to order one red and one black TT cover for sure, and I wish they made them in other non-tac colors too.

I've been looking for a Pelican/Storm solution for the loaded AR mags and may go that route as well to replace the SAW box.

Let us know how they work out for you. I thought this was a great idea when I first saw them. Have you e-mailed TT to inquire about a custom yellow version? :p

I can recommend the TT covers. GTG.

You're still toting an ammo can, but it's less obvious. Most often, people seem to think it's a camera bag.

CED Shooter's Backpack.

Dimensions: 17.5" high x 13.5" wide x 9.5" deep so fits a standard ammo box and they are I think 12" wide.

$61.00 if you find a Midway coupon code that is 10.00 off 50.00 purchase.

Has anyone tried the ammo sac made by emdom? It looks sturdy enough for a decent amount of ammo, but not airtight. You would still need ziploc bags for moisture protection. Also, there is no hard structure to these, which depending on your needs, can be a good or bad thing.

http://prostores2.carrierzone.com/servlet/emdomusa/Detail?no=55

I think the TT sling looks ideal for the slim ammo cans....I guess I will have to pick a couple of these up. I'm guessing a larger size can in a similar sling would be a bit cumbersome. Let us know how these work out, please.

rob_s
03-20-10, 09:04
Plato, even without having the TT in hand I can tell you that I wouldn't load a 50 or SAW can into a sling like that personally. But, I also virtually never use a can like that, other than to carry a slew of pre-loaded mags to a class, and I'm looking into alternatives for that like a Pelican/Storm-type solution. What I'd like to find is a 30-35 P-mag solution that holds exactly that count. 35 Pmags is right around 1k rounds (depending on if you load 28 or 30 rounds per mag) and would get me through just about any class with zero loading. Would potentially not even need to remove the slinger from the car at all, but would have it there and non-obvious if I needed to.

The only problem with the Pelican case is that they tend to hold expensive things even when it's not guns. That could lead to theft, or inspiring someone to break into the vehicle, without them even knowing that what they were getting was firearm-related.

Not air-tight but I use this alot when I go to the range with the shotgun or bolt action rifle. It also makes a good place to dump ammo while loading magazines.

I see them all the time at the jobsite and don't think "gun!" when I see them in that context, but couple the can with a long "discrete" case and it becomes more obvious what you are toting.

So toting a long discrete case with any other bag would look normal?

I second the suggestion that you should use the ammo can for storage and use another bag for transport.

Lunch coolers, discrete and keep ammo from playing tricks on the long hot summer day.

i use them for ammo transport in my bags, as they flatten out to nothing when empty, they're lighter than ammo cans and don't make any noise when partially full. they're designed more for transportation/range use than long-term ammo storage. i typically fill them up with loose ammo, loaded mags on top of that, plus a mag loader in the pocket.
disclaimer: i designed those things, so i'm obviously biased. :)

I have a small, rectangular Igloo cooler (removable top, not the one pictured above, probably 20x8x12"), and I don't think you could get much more "low profile" in Florida than a cooler. They are pretty close to being air tight.

I like these for the "Bug Out V" also. Can be labeled to disguise such as "Emergency Food", or "Dry Goods", or whatever. Might help if stopped by some one. Always good to blend in and not look "Suspicious".

As for ammo storage, I always keep some "Desiccant" with it, and will take it out once in a supper great while and put in the "Electric" oven @200 to dry out and reuse.

As posted above I got two of these and am very happy with them. They install a little strangely but they work well IMHO. Couple a red one with a blue discrete bag from Eagle and a yellow visor from Adidas and I look like any other color-blind tourist in SE Florida! :D
