Hello all. I have been trying to track down some Winchester 231 powder for a while now and cannot find it in stock. If anyone has a source for some of this powder, would you please give me the details. Thanks

231 is impossible to find. HP-38 is the same thing. (Hodgdon)

I found a pound of that locally. The local FFL says that the Distributors out here can't even get 231. Crazy that such a "so-so" powder is impossible to get.

Ya I don't even love the powder but I am using somebody's reloader and they have the powder charge already set for the 231 so I figured I would stick with that. Last time I bought 16 lbs from natches but they havent had any in a long time. Hopefully it starts appearing sometime soon.

That's my problem too! I established loads for all my pistol loads years ago using 231. It's decent and having one powder made live simple.

I hope HP-38 and/or 231 starts showing up soon.

I love 231/HP38. Luckily, I bought quite a bit of it last year.

231 is my favorite because 1 it is very clean, which is good for my P7M8 and 2, 5.3 grains of powder loads my 115 gr 9mm, 180gr 40S&W and 185 gr .45ACP. That's one powder measure for all 3 pistols! :D

Went to my usual place to get powder today and they did not have 231. They did have HP38? What's up with that??? Is Hogdon up to something?

Is Hogdon up to something?

What do you mean?

What do you mean?

It means that Hodgon ordered more from the manufacturer and Winchester did not. That is the meaning.

If you want me to find you some, PM me and I'll make some calls.

Aren't Hodgdon and WIN the same now?

WIN's reloading data sight sends you to Hodgdon's website.

Word of advice, do not order it online as he will NEVER ship it, and will NEVER answer the phone. TNT is good only if you have hands on the merchandise.

My local Bass Pro has had HP-38 in stock every time I've been in for the last two months.

Nice. I stop in at Bass Pro every so often.... but the HP-38 is usually gone.

Dropped by Cabelas today and they had 2 pounds of HP-38, so I grabbed one of them.

They had none packaged as 231. I think there are a lot of loaders out there that still don't know it's the same powder.

Went back to Cabela's yesterday. They had at least 2 containers of 231, and 3 containers of HP-38.

For what ever reason, the HP was $2 less for the same powder.

What caliber are you reloading? Have you tried Ramshot Silhouette? I use a ton of it in 9mm, 40, and hotter 45 loads. Most of the time I use Clays my 45 practice loads but if you want some velocity out of your 45 loads then then try Silhouette.

45, 9, and every so often a little 38 spl. I stick with 231 for the simple fact that I developed loads for it a long time ago, and then sold off my chrony.

I have 3 lbs of HP-38 now so I'm set for a while.

I go back and forth between HP 38 and W 231 depending on which is available. I've found no discernable difference between the two powders. They meter the same on my Dillon SDB, and I use the same load (5.3 grains under a Zero 230g FMJ) when switching between the two.

There should be no difference as it's the exact same powder.

I just finished my last bit of 231 off and switched to HP-38. My 231 was purchased a long time ago, but the bulk density of the current production HP-38 was exactly the same.
