thinking of getting a 14.5 inch DD barrel for my current 16 inch carbine for a lightweight CQC rifle. Should I spend the 300 $ for the extra 1.5 inch savings?

I wouldn't advise it, unless you were trying to make your HD gun as similar to an issued weapon as possible.

ok then, one more question. My rifle has a carbine gas system. Can I convert it to midlength by installing a new gas tube and re-pinning the FSB further up on the barrel?

The only reason is, how could you reliably plug the original barrel gas hole? Feel free to correct me, I am willing to learn something new every day.

build it the way you want it the 1st time. If you dont it will only end up costing you more when redoing it

I agree, but I already own one.

Turning a CAR gas barrel into a middie gas barrel would be cost prohibitive.
I consider the jump from CAR to Midlength to be worth the money.
