Okay Templar,

Tell me what I need to know about building a Khyber Pass. I see that DCI is now building receivers for them so besides a Romy G kit and a Bulgy side folder what else to I need?

Who can put it all together for me?

h8mtv
04-24-07, 05:38
That is a good start. I am working on one myself right now. I am going to build it with a Hungarian front end from an AMMS kit and use Egyptian handguards. I am not sure what grip is "correct".

TOrrock
04-24-07, 08:09
As far as correct.....since as far as we know, none have been photographed up close, we don't really know, but I'd go with the new "shiny plumb" US grip from K-Var.

I am going to regret this, but....what is a Khyber Pass gun?

I know it is a location. I was unaware of a perticular rifle configuration named after that area.

Pictures started surfacing in Afghanistan and Central Asia back in the mid 90's of a prticular conifguration that no one had seen from a military arsenal......an AKM with an AK-74 triangular steel folding stock.

The most famous is the one that Osama was filmed shooting in a propaganda film.

At first we thought these were home grown modifications done in Afghanistan or Pakistan......hence the "Khyber Pass" moniker....

Then we started seeing Uzbek federal troops with them, so they might very well be a limited production in one of the Russian armories, or locally modded rifles.......

Uzbek troops.....

"KARA-SUU, UZBEKISTAN: Uzbek soldiers stand guard along the bridge leading to Kyrgyzstan across the Sharikh Khansai river in town of Kara-Suu, 21 May 2005. Security forces have been massively reinforced in Uzbekistan's restive border town of Kara-Suu following a large protest there on the previous day, an AFP correspondent standing just across the border, in the Kyrgyz part of the town, reported. Shiny plum it is. One US slant, one US grip, one US trigger group and one DCI and all is well with the alphabet boys.

I've got the stock set and ordered a receiver, now I just need a kit. Copes is out of select romy's. Any suggestions on alternate kits? I'm looking for something with a new or like new chrome barrel.

Gunthings.com still shows excellent condition Romanian kits.

Cope's just got some Hungarian underfolder kits. Barrels should be great, and you could probably sell the stock set that you're not using.

I'm toying with that idea myself.

DPH has nice kits too. I just got 2 with paper in the barrel.

How long ago, it looks like they are out now :(

Eh...nevermind.

I saw where Brad@GunThings posted where they still have like new kits available so I emailed him for one.

Next up, DCI Khyber Pass receiver!

My Khyber Pass project is finally moving forward.

I'm working with h8mtv (AKforum staff & M4C member) for the build and he has been outstanding.

h8mtv's gunsmithing website:
http://mysite.verizon.net/resuuro3 (http://mysite.verizon.net/resuuro3/)

My parts list so far:
(1.) Romanian "G" kit from Copes Distributing - looks unfired to me
(2.) Tapco single hook trigger from Copes Distributing.
(3.) Russian metal side-folding stock from K-Var
(4.) Shiny plum U.S. made grip from K-Var
(5.) Russian AKM wood hand guards from AKForum member Red*Dawn
(6.) U.S. made slant brake from AK-Builder.com
(7.) AKS-74 rivit kit from AK-Builder.com

On order:
(8.) NoDak Spud NDS-1KP receiver - Placed it on order today. I can say without a moments hesitation that FFL's for Virginia Beach totally suck. This was a major pain in my behind.

I cannot wait to see how it looks when it comes back from Sean.

Mine should look identical to yours when it's done.

The only difference in our parts list is my Nodack receiver.

Your's will be more authentic than mine, I think the dimples on the Nodak recievers are closer to Russian. ;)

Hrrmm, I have two Romanian front end just laying around...i should do that.

How does the triangle stock feel?

Has anyone wrapped it with 550 cord?

JOHNO

I find the triangle stock is comfortable, the Russians used to wrap them with their rubber tournoquets.

JOHNO, how deep was the "G" engraving on your Romanian kit? Did you bother trying to get rid of it?

JOHNO

I took it down a little, there is still a "Ghost G". Its faint, it does'nt bother me too bad.

You were correct.

The G engraving is no big deal. While I would prefer it to be gone it's way to insignificant to waste any time & effort to remove. Once the gun is refinished it is a non-issue.

Anyone have a good source for Russian Wood.

I bent my flat last weekend, drilled my trunnion last night for the stock catch (have to do this before the build!), and I am fitting the front trunnion this weekend.

I sanded with a dremmel sanding wheel until G was gone and surrounding area was blended. Then sand blasted prior to parking. No sign of it

Dinger,

Also keep an eye out for Egyptian Maadi wood. The handguards are almost identical at a fraction of the price. I just picked up a set that was painted green for $20. They have refinished beautifully.

I never had any luck finding Maadi wood.

The best I could find was a complete fixed stock set (Like New), but the guy wanted over $250 for it.

Rusmilitary has russian wood, but it is around $90 for the set (not sure about shipping!). Would AK or AKM wood be better?

Progress report: fitted front trunnion into receiver last night and located three of the four rivet holes.:D

Khyber Pass Rifles are wunderbar!

I built mine on a Polish kit with nice, dark wood. There's a guy on the akforum marketplace who is located in poland and seems to always have ample stocks of the unissued stuff, which is a lighter color that most people seem to prefer. I think his name's Lakuart, or something like that.

Thanks for the good comments.

I think the Khyber type rifles are pretty easy to turn into a more practical AK platform on short notice. It's not too big of a deal to switch the wood/plastic/metal furniture out for a K-Var polymer folder set, and change the slant break to a FH of some sort.

Without getting too far off topic, here's one of the VZ58 I took a number of months ago with my old Camera.

I think it was the inventiveness of the tribal gunsmiths that led to the mass copying of the KPR in the USA. The thought of another group of human beings on the opposite side of the world hammering, cutting, drilling, and grinding on an AK to make it a better object is a big inspiration to people who build/purchase custom AK's here.

VA_Dinger

I personally find the Uzbek federal troops "Khyber Pass" rifles like Johno's to be the most interesting.

Thats why I went though the trouble of finding real Russian wood & K-Var "Shiny plum" grip for mine.

That being said, I have yet to see a U.S. built Khyber that I did not like. :D

Soviet/Russian slings vary in price depending on age and ink stamping.

If you're not looking for a specific era of sling, but just want a Russian mustard yellow sling, look around the boards.

AA-OK should have some in stock:

Pieces like the Khyber Pass AK, Afghan War Rugs, Serb AKs captured from the conflict regions, Iraqi war souviners............................captures the imagination, provides hours of research material and , at least for me, gives me an escape from the day to day bullshit I have to endure.

Putting a russian sidefolder on any AK is one of the more practical things you can do to the rifle.
