I finially got the boss to agree to equip our rifles with lights. We have a variety of rifles issued to our officers ranging from DPMS, Bushmaster carbines to about a dozen M16 A1's. They are all secured in overhead racks in our patrol cars.

Obviously, a Surefire on a railed forend would be the better way to go, but that is not an option. I can spend about $200 per rifle. We need to use the above mentioned racks and accomodate right and left handed officers, as the weapons are assigned to squad cars --not individual users.

I am tempted to try the following mount with a TLR light and a tape switch.

Any useful comments, suggestions, alternatives, etc would be greatly appreciated.

We have one somewhere. It was a disappointment at best.

No longer in use. The (front) sling swivel may be in the way. May have to cut it off.

Would I be better off mounting the light on one of these?

Hello all,

I'm new to the site and wanted to show that I tried to find the information and am not a lazy poster. I'm going to mount my first light and don't have rails - don't really need them either. I really like the lug mounted lights at the 6 o'clock position. There wasn't much feedback in this thread and I'm hoping to get a little more this time. The mount I'm considering is linked below. Please advise if you have anything negative to say about the mount or mount position. Also, let me know if you think it's a bad idea (operation/resale value) to remove the front sling mount. Thanks in advance for everyone's time.

P.S. - I've seen the FSB attached mounts and don't care for the way they look. I'll consider them though if they're strongly recommended.

Signal4l , I can't get the link you provided to work, it looks like you
were linking to midwest industries front sight base mount, which
I was going to recommend.
I'm currently using it on 2 m4's. I think its one of the better options
and would suit your stated needs with proper training (ie: reaching
over the top of the handguard on reaction side transition for activation
depending of course on which side of the FSB you mount the TLR-1 on).

You'd be better off with a 12 o'clock mount than anything at 6 o'clock.

I'm using a TLR-1 on a UTG universal rail mount in front of the FSB. Yes, UTG. It was $6.50 shipped, and so far (after 130 rounds) it hasn't fallen off.

All of our dept. issued 6921's have MI FSB mounts with Surefire 6P's mounted in them. They have worked well for the 8+ years they have had them. Now we are allowed to carry our own approved Ar-15 type rifles... so I have mine set up differently now.:D
