Who is going and what are you shooting? I have a Galil that I think I am going to use as wel as a Sig P226. Staying at the Comfort Inn, driving up from Ralegh. Looking forward to the class. I have attended a couple of other Vickers classes and I can say he is a great instructor.

Judging by my class roster this is going to be one outstanding class. We have a great group of guys signed up.

I'm going to try and stop in on day two to say hello. Unfortunately my work schedule will not allow any more fun that weekend.

FYI - If anybody else needs the directions to the range just let me know. I will be posting the day one start time tomorrow.

- Please do me a favor and take a lot of photos and post them up.

- This will be the class #2 discussion & AAR thread.

I'll be down a for a while on Sat. to shoot the shit and take some pics.

The first class was outstanding, you're going to get a kick out of this.

The Galil will be a great choice.

Instead of the 3 seconds from the low ready w/safety engaged your given for hitting the 9"x12" plate way down range (during the walk offs) you'll be given 3 minutes we know how the old eyes are, it may take you a whole minute to see the plate! j/k ;)

I'm bringing my Arsenal SL-106(5.56)w/aimpoint and Wilson CQB. Anyone know where to watch the DeLa Hoya fight sat night? Should be a fun drive up from fay, later!
-Zef M.

I'm afraid there aren't too many sports bars in South Hill. In fact, there isn't much of ANYTHING in South Hill.

The closest one I know of is a Buffalo Wild Wings in Danville Va., which is about 100 miles away. ;)

I'll be there with my Arsenal SA M-7 R, and a SAR-1 as a backup. Both are 7.62 x 39 and just have iron sights.

It's an oustanding group of guys today, with a lot of different AK's, ranging from Century Yugo's and SAR series to Arsenal Inc. rifles and a couple of Krebs KTR's and a Galil ARM.

I took pics and video, but it'll get posted probably early this coming week.

Some quick thoughts:

1) Don't buy a used SLR-106; there may be a reason it is for sale
2) I-95 North after a NASCAR race sucks
3) If you weren't in 1 & 2, and aren't signed up 3; sign up now!
4) A stock AK is a good rifle, but there's room for improvement
5) If someone says "Cracker Barrel" or BBQ, answer "Cracker Barrel"
6) If enough AKs are fired at a berm, it will rain dirt
7) If your AK class doesn't include an STG-44, it isn't Vickers Tactical
8) El Snacho sneaks across the border just before LAV watches you shoot

Huh....You guys had the same issues we had in our class, apparently.

For some reason or other you are guaranteed to do something stupid when Larry is watching you, like tripping over a chair during the box drill or forgetting to transition when you run dry until you are almost standing at the target and THEN deciding to transition and pop two rounds into the target from point blank....

Great class. Weather held up nicely, so the rain that was forecasted for Sunday didn't happen. It was the most competent group of shooters I've seen in my limited number of classes. Very good muzzle discipline.

Chest rigs can really get in the way. If I did the class again, I'd use a thigh rig for mags.

Shooting the MP43 was very cool, and the M&P .45 met my expectations. Thanks to Larry for sharing his wisdom and his great instruction, and Paul and David for organizing a winner of a class.

Did LAV refer to that episode as "freelancing" and "you're testing his skills" ? :)

We do that too .

I don't remember him saying anything specifically about that particular incident...although he did tell me that my boots were better suited for shoveling pig sh*t than for range use. :D

My hangup was that whenever my rifle ran dry my first instinct was to try and reload it...but 25 and in Larry wanted us to transition to our pistol.

Since I am mainly a pistol shooter and since most of my training has been on handguns my brain is wired to try and reload or do an immediate action drill whenever the weapon in my hands stops going bang.

I was trying to reload as we were advancing on the target when I realized "Hey, doofus! You're supposed to transition to a pistol!" and that's when I started to draw and fire my pistol. By the time I actually got the weapon out of the holster I was 2 yards from the target.

Oops.....

The AK course was a kick in the nuts for me. Training on an unfamiliar platform like the AK really fudged me up on stuff I have no problem with on the AR. I had forgotten how poorly I can perform when I have to dedicate too many clock cycles to thinking about what I am doing.

Of course, using a chest rig for the first time and a sucky 3 point sling that I was constantly fighting with didn't help much either....

Again, it was a great group of guys with a wide assortment of AK's.

Great class and I enjoyed hanging out on Saturday.

As far as the 106's go, there weren't any of the feeding issues seen enmasse at the first class, but there was one that for whatever reason, the bolt carrier would jump the rails and bind up in the receiver. I'd never seen that before, and the drill to get it unstuck was to mortar it. My buddy vacpk9 used his 106FR and had one failure to feed with Brown Bear 55 gr. soft point, but no other issues that I'm aware of.

Big thanks to Larry and Dave for running another top notch class!

The class, as all of the LAV classes I've attended, was great. This was my first trip up to South Hill and I found the crew up there to be a good set of guys with no ego to deal with. I certainly enjoyed myself and was more than happy with the AK setup I ran. My WASR ran like a champ and I was able to hold my own during the drills thanks to my trusty Aimpoint and MILF-enhanced skills. ;)

Thanks to Larry, Paul, Dave, and everyone else for making this a great class.

it was an outstanding class with an excellent group of students coupled with grade "A" instruction. i learned quite a bit [especially how much more practice i need].

very challenging for someone like me, who doesn't have a lot of experience or training with a carbine. learning transitions, reloads, malfunction drills, etc. excellent skill-building and it gives a great base from which to build.

wow. a chest rig can really "f" you up if you are a newbie; i've got to rethink my platform.

vickers sling works as advertised. i need to do an across-the-board refit on my other rifles.

der sturmgewehr… what can you say about the granddaddy of them all? thanks to larry for allowing us to shoot it.

thanks to larry + dave for some great training. big shout to paul for putting it all together. definitely looking forward to future classes.

and a special thanks to the milfmaster for being… scary. i'll let you know whenever the carnival comes to town. :D

The class was excellent. I learned a lot and had fun too.

I was surprised at how dialed in everyone was. Everyone was safe with their guns even though we were playing with "grown up" safety rules. I was also surprised at how much joking around there was among students and instructors. We were making fun of ourselves and each other, and having a kick ass time.

All of my guns worked and I got some good trigger time with good people. What else could a guy ask for!

Thanks Dave, Larry and especially VA Dinger for putting this together.

The first AK class was the same way. Everybody didn't have lots of training time under their belts, but everybody did manage to handle their weapons safely and without a whole lot of head banging about safety.

We didn't need a range nazi because everybody seemed to be adult enough to handle themselves well and not do anything stupid. (No manipulation of loaded weapons with people downrange, etc...) I didn't see a single safety violation, and I was paying pretty careful attention because I hadn't trained with most of the guys in the class before.

The first AK class was the same way. It seemed to me that most of the class had previously trained with Larry a number of times and he seemed to know most of the class on a first name basis. Everybody seemed to know everybody except for me. The only people I knew were the Manassas fellers I had trained with previously.

The informal nature of the class was surprising, as was the dinner and breakfast that we had together as a class. I've only seen the entire class AND the instructor break bread together on one previous occasion when I took a class with a former longtime SBS chap.

I agree, another great Vickers class. I discovered a lot of things I never knew about the AK and it was a great chance to work on my carbine skills which certainly could use some work. A battle rifle or M4 class would be great maybe we can get one of those set up for later in the year. By the way I agree with everyone else so far the chest rigs are really lousy I don't see how communist "freedom fighters" thought they were such a great idea although I guess they didn't have much choice.

I actually like using chest rigs. My rig (a Bush Boar) worked out quite well. I think the trick is to make sure it is properly fitted (I wear mine rather high) and do some dry-runs in it to make sure everything is where it needs to be.

You are right it is just a matter of finding the rig that fits and making sure it is functional in the field. I just did not have that rig last weekend, still a great class though.
