Im down. We should try to generate interest for an M4C training group in the region. Im either in Mandeville, LA or Hattiesburg, MS.

My bad. I wasn't sure if you meant just a shooting group or a shooting group with a M4C regional training group page. Ill try to PM some people I know are close to see if they are interested.

There is definitely a dedicated group of shooters in this area so I'm sure this would be an excellent idea.

There are other resources available as well. You might check the link in my signature.

If you guys get together, make it happen, and post an AAR with pics I can just about guarantee you that you'll have earned your own forum.

This would be GREAT fellas. I am just obsessed with this kind of stuff. Yet almost everyone I know who loves guns is obsessed with bagging the biggest buck, not the fastest split times or a quick speed reload. It would be great to have a regional group to get together. I am always around the Hattiesburg, MS area so please let me know. PM me for my email or cell. Cheers, Jax

It is just barely springtime so people are just poking their heads out of their holes. If there's no activity by the end of the summer then we'll re-evaluate.

Remember this is FL, we're like Australia and our shooting season is the opposite of yours. :p Our attendance will start to taper off now as it gets hotter out. By May we'll be at 75% attendance at best. Rain and heat will keep people home much more so than "cold" that we don't get. ;)

But seems like there are more shooters down there and too many bubba's up here in North LA.

Well if we gave you enough notice would you join us?

and just as an FYI i dont get back until mid-may, i mean you guys can start without me just sayin lol

anyways i guess we should start picking out a location, you guys wanna do a meet-and-greet first or a range day first?

that would be the nest order of business i suppose

personally i think we should do a meet-and-greet thing.. theres always that one

I'd really like to get this ball rolling fellas. The first thing we need to do is make the rally point. So just as a 'show of hands', tell me what major town in South MS./LA. do each of you live closest too? New Orleans, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, etc. If we could tally up the easiest place for the majority of us to meet up then we can go from there setting up a time and place. As for myself I am a stones throw from Hattiesburg. L3mon are you still OCONUS?

Hammar
04-08-10, 10:20
I am just west of New Orleans.

jaxman7
04-08-10, 10:56
Thanks Hammar. OK one vote N.O., one vote Hattiesburg.

l3mon
04-08-10, 17:50
I'm in gulfport

and yes still oconus til around may, but like i said i can jump in whenever..

we can always move the rally point for differnt days so its closer for some people at least once or twice.

Fishingfool where are you located at man?

Did I leave anyone out?

I checked out Honey Island shooting range and it looks pretty good. www.honeyisland.org

Rife range (unsure of distance seems to be 100 yards)
4749
Pistol range
4750

It is located near the Honey Island swamp. I am guessing Honey Island is what about 15 miles North East of Slidell?

BR870
04-11-10, 19:32
My major gripes w/Honey Island.

A. Will not allow us to do anything other than shoot from the line at fixed range. While nothing wrong with that, its not the best location to work on skillset.

B. requires a valid LA Hunting/Fishing license.

jaxman7
04-11-10, 20:40
Good to know br870. Anybody else have any ideas on a location that allows the type of training we want to do?

I think that might have been at a police range but Im not sure.

l3mon

I'm in new orleans.

Honey island sucks for training. Can't draw from holster in addition to things mentioned. Sherburn WMA is open to public no R.O.'s but no facilities, no targets, no nothing. gotta bring everything yourself. however, that'll be a heck of a drive for ms guys.

shit i'd drive 3 hours for a range day! i can build stands and shit.. thats easy.. could start a "fund" for everyone too.. to buy targets and such..

jaxman7
04-12-10, 00:13
Correction, Robert LA, not Kenner. Look in Training section under Magpul Dynamics and there is an AAR of the class.

I thought you were referring to this course in Walker. http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=45234

Yea, I would be willing to drive a good ways. Its not like we'll be doing this once a week.

I also hope expectations aren't too high in terms of skill as I have nil. I'm just a weekend shooter but I am looking forward to learning and growing and picking up a few tips here and there.

the range that hosted the magpul class in robert la is a private range. You can forget about that.

SMPSA has a 3 gun match in Poplarville Mississippi on the first sunday of each month. I've been whoring that match out ever since they started holding 3 gun matches last year. Here's some vids:

http://www.bayoushooter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32762

And the website:

http://www.smsps.com/SMPSA.htm

Meet for the match, shoot it, hang out, talk shit, and tell lies. Match fee is 15 bucks. I always bring 100 rifle, 100 pistol, 100 bird, 5 slugs minimum.

all in all not a bad plan actually..

cl2

As far as places to shoot at, I'm unaware of anyplace near BR that allows anything other than basic target shooting.

you should have an invite from me to join a social group called GCCM.
if you need to find it, click USER CP then on the left sidebar it says NETWORKING and under that is SOCIAL GROUPS, click that and you'll see it.. that way its easier to find and we can get to know each other until we get a sub-forum.

Here is another idea I am going to throw out to y'all (had to say it! This is the south MS/LA group thread ha ha). In Wiggins MS. there is a Firearms school called Elite Arms Training and they do run carbine classes there. I haven't taken one but I've been through 2 of their handgun courses and I am very impressed. I you are unfamiliar with the location, Wiggins is about 30 miles south of Hattiesburg. Check their sight out at elitearmstraining.com. I was unimpressed honestly until I went through the first handgun class. Nice guy and he will run you hard! Let me know fellas if we could do this. Just financially (mainly ammo funds right now) I don't think that I can make it and That REALLY irritates the snot out of me. Pretty low on 5.56/7.62 and just got out of a handgun class last weekend shooting about 500 rounds. Meeting up at Woolmarket, sounds to me, to be the best course of action for those that can make it. It's usually a pretty decent match, certainly economic as the entry is $5 and low round count.

jaxman7
06-09-10, 10:00
I'll see if I can get off on the 19th and go down there. FYI in Ellisville, which is between Hattiesburg & Laurel, there is handgun shoot the first Sunday of every month. If anybody is ever up this way ( I live outside of Ellisville) on that first Sunday stop by and we'll shoot. Its a low round count that usually about 250 rounds and is only $5.

Hey l3mon whats the details of the match on the 17th? Three gun? Rifle only? Round count? Stages? etc.........Thanks,

-Jax

IrishDevil
07-01-10, 22:02
The Woolmarket match is a 3-Gun match, usually 3-5 stages. Last match had 3 stages, mainly to keep it simple because of the heat.

Round count is low, show up with 100 pistol, 25 shotgun, 100 rifle, and you'll go home with a fair amount of ammo. They're always light on shotgun, no buckshot, sometimes 1-2 slugs. Expect rifle targets out to 250 yards or so. Turn out is usually pretty good for this match(average of 25) so as not to take all day stages tend to be shorter. The round counts and number of stages grows in the winter time, due to better(more comfortable) weather.

While we won't start up again until September, the Poplarville match is much higher round count. We've been known to have up to 32 round shotgun stages, rifle targets as far as 325 yards, and longer range 25-30 yard pistol shots. We like to have a minimum of one "3 gun" stage, the rest are usually 2 gun. Usually 4-6 stages, depending on setup and help. If you come to Poplarville, I recommend 100 pistol, 50 bird, 10 buckshot, 10 slugs, and 150 rifle. Depending on your accuracy:cool:, you'll go home with ammo. Shooter turn out is 15-20.

I want in on the next shoot. I've never participated in a competitive shooting event and am eager to get my feet wet. I had prior obligations during the last shoot.

Hey jman FishingFool will be waaayyy more qualified than me to respond but concerning the shotgun get a mag extension tube and some good shell carriers. Trust me on this one. :suicide: Oh, and bring water (lots of it) and extra food. At least until F-Fool can get his grill up and running after the shoot!

That last 3 gun shoot was my first one as well. I'd be curious to hear from the other guys who went what they discovered about themselves and their gear/guns and what needed improvement and changes. One thing I learned is to DRILL the different stages in my mind before the buzzer rings on me. You guys who were in my squad remember me completely forgetting to shoot the swinging steel with the 12 gauge. I can tell you the shotgun I bring, and my method of carrying shells, will definitely change.
L3mon what kind of gear did you order after the match?

Other than a holster everything can be put in a dump pouch or in your pockets for the first few matches until you figure out what you want.

Yea, I knew about Big Buck. It was strange because I hadn't been there in a while and I went there last month looking for a folding chair and before we pulled up I told my girlfriend that I felt like this place is going to go out of business soon because the last time I went I could just sense the place wasn't doing well and I felt like because it isn't the easiest place to get to it was hurting business. The words had just finished coming out of my mouth when we saw they were in the process of closing. It's sad to see a local business go down.

Gander is fun to visit and pick up and play with the guns but they are EXPENSIVE. Every once in a while you find a good deal. Their ammo for the most part is literally 50% higher than Wally World. But like I said its fun to walk around. Heck its really entertaining to listen to the good ol boys walk around the guns and explain to their buddy or wife how this particular gun has awesome knock down power. Or "I shot straight through a whitetail's pupil at 800 yards with a gun just like that there". Fun stuff
Rumor is that H-burg is getting an Academies. That would be great!

Run what you got. Woolmarket match is laid back and the round count is not outrageous with the shotty. I can loan out shotgun shell holders for those that need them. It's a good match where I really gained a lot of confidence and made some great friends.

Just be sure to sight in your rifle and have a pistol holster capable of securely carrying your piece. I knew when I first started that I was hooked and I'll bet yas everyone else that showed up last month will agree.

What're you getting? Don't forget weak hand drills!!

jaxman7
08-10-10, 14:29
Fish I really wanted that FN but I decided to go with the 930 SPX Mossy. I have heard too many good things about them after they got the canted front sight problem fixed. Honestly I never thought I would ever own a Mossberg. M24shooter has a thread in the shotgun section that sealed the deal for me. I have PM'd and emailed a ton of people before I decided. For $600 you can't beat it. The FN has some very clear advantages like the dual pistons That come with it and interchangeable choke tubes (among other things) but this shotty should serve me just fine.
Kyle you know it! Weak hand drills for sure. This one being an autoloader should make it much easier.
I may have to dial it in that morning on one of the other ranges before we go loud. Heck who knows I may just remember to hit the swinging plate with a slug this time!

So far, I understand we need 100 rounds each of rifle and pistol, 25 shotshells. A dump pouch is recommended and I assume a holster is necessary.

To keep me from looking like a total dweeb, can someone give me an idea of the drills and such we will be running? Shooting while walking?, transitioning to a handgun?, laying down shooting?, what's the shortest and longest shot, reloads, ...

I'm just wondering because the range I shoot at mostly doesn't allow standing, much less walking. So, if I have an idea, I'll drive to a range that does allow some moving drills.

I'm looking forward to this match.

Thanks!

see my YouTube videos for last months match. Don't break the 180, finger off trigger when moving is key. Shots go from close to 300 yards. Not a lot of long range though. I would sight in all rifles at 200 yards. Transitions are done mostly by barrel. Shoot with gun, safety on, dump in barrel, repeat. A holster for your pistol is required but you can get away with putting all your mags and shells in pockets or a dump pouch. A lot of people always recommend waiting until after the first match to buy additional gear b/c you will get to see a wide variety of stuff there and have a good feel for things later. You can go prone or kneel or sit and shoot it the stage setup warrants it. Once u get there the match director will go over the rules and answer questions. After that he'll show every one the stages and the course of fire. After that the group will be broken up into squads to rotate through the stages. Shoot, have a good time, and relax. It's a 5 dollar match.

Jaxman7 and I are coming again but we are going to have to leave at 1 pm. We have to get back for my daughters birthday, 2 years old. I'm hoping we can do at least two stages.

I am intending on going but I'm sure I'll look like some kind of "Jethro". With the help of some ty-raps, duct tape, and paracord I might get mags, holsters, etc. hanging off of my hips where I can get to them. :fie:

But this old man is looking forward to giving this 3-gun stuff a try...

I'll be attending.

Jax, I went online looking for shot timers thinking they would be like 30 or 40 bucks. Holy crap, more like $130-$140. I might look on the EE for one.

And after shooting with your comp, I told the GF I may know what I want for my birthday now. :D She might order it tonight and I would love for it to come before Saturday.

Now that's a funny mental image! What do need that you don't have?

Hey amac and welcome to the forum! This place has a metric ton of info. As far as meeting up on Saturday it starts at 9 and will last probably until 3. For directions Google the Gulf Coast Pistol and Rifle Club. Hope you can make it there.

Jman enjoyed shooting with you Sunday and I love the VTAC rail you have. As far as my brake goes it really is very impressive how much of a difference it makes with good control of the rifle. Did you hint hint to the girlfriend yet!?!? Good luck with that. :suicide:

Can anyone list some landmarks before and after the road for the Range?

So, we can be ready to turn into the range or be able to say "Dadgummit, I went too far!"

Thanks,

if your looking at the range from the road there is a Navy range to the right and a concrete 'factory' to the left, it has huge silos..

Yeah... the reason I ask is because I haven't done anything but boring, stationary shooting. So, I'm a bit ill equiped. You don't mind quasi noobies do ya? I do love to shoot! :moil:

I'm in the same boat. I have no gear except for the guns, a dump pouch thing and a decent belt. From what everyone is saying you can more than likely borrow what you don't have and after shooting the match you'll have a better idea of what you need for the next go round.

The first time I did anything other than static shooting was this past Saturday. I was total garbage but hopefully after attending a few of these matches I'll be something resembling a somewhat decent shooter.

FishinFool, thanks for the offer. I plan to make a game time decision on going. At that, I will not be able to stay the whole day. I will need my own vehicle. Great offer and we will have to hook up one way or another. By the way, do you visit Puglia's? I frequent the joint because I live so close. Hope to see you on Saturday.

Wow, that's early. I was planning to pull out arond 7:00 - 7:30. It's only about an hour-fifteen to Biloxi. Why so early? And, not what type of shotgun, but what number shot do u use? I have lots of variety of bird shot, but no buck/slug shot.

FishingFool
08-20-10, 19:50
7.5 shot. I start early b/c I always stop for ice, get breakfast and I drive like an old granny. No need for buckshot this time. Might want to bring a few slugs just in case.

Thank you FishingFool, for grilling this afternoon. That grill you have is pretty damn cool.

Despite getting my face sunburned I had an awesome time and I'm hooked for sure. I already convinced a friend of mine to come with me next time.

Just an FYI, I was the guy in the yellow shirt, brown pants and prescription glasses.
