so loud my ceiling fan is buzzing in my living room.

I have found the Anti-ghetto-rat repellent: Irish music played at 11.

I'm sitting in my living room enjoying a Guinness and listening to the sweet sound of the Wolfe Tones at 140db from MY truck in my driveway.

Suck it, mother****ers.

I used to keep a CD of angry Scottish battle music (bagpipes) loaded up in the truck so if I pulled up next to some jackass blasting rap out of his hooptie I could return fire.......

I don't have many neighbors. Thank the lord! When I happen to pull up next to someone thumping that crap, I have on occasion, gotten out and politely asked them to turn it down. It has always worked. Fwiw, use caution :)

Nice! you could throw in some bag pipes as well. Maybe if you're Irish, that would bug you too. Polkas?

Irishman here. Yup, I have discovered the joys of playing "our" music at whatever volume suits the occassion & have even taken to practicing my tin whistle while walking the 'hood.

The neighbors have cooled out about it (the bass blasting at my daughter's nap time) quite a bit since they discovered Uilleann pipe and drum (during theirs). It is a fair exchange.

Years ago when I first moved to FL I had some neighbors who would work on their stock car until 0300 and usually test the tune from 0200-0300. Open headers at 0300 will make pictures fall from the walls. It came to an abrupt halt when I started letting my truck "warm up" from 0500 until I left for work at 0630. Apparently they didn't like 1800 watts of bagpipe music.:D

I have either Bagpipe or Civil War Fife & Drum music for myself. If I really wanted to cause problems I could play my CD of Minstrel Music from the 1800s which have the original, not PC lyrics.

I do the same thing, but it is a combination of punk, hardcore, and irish folk/punk.

I just spent a week in Philly though, and I think that in certain neighborhoods this practice could escalate to violence very quickly. I have been there many times before, but the amount of racial tension still blows me away every time I'm there.

A lot of malls and stuff have figured this out too.

They play Gospel, or Barry Manilow, or other sort of music and the young people hanging out move on...

At first I was going to suggest Drowning Pool or Static-X, but honestly, Barry Mannilo or Gospel might be the ticket. My wifes Christian Contemporary does it for me.

My personal favorite to counter rap is bluegrass. Flatt and Scruggs does the trick real quick. I have a feeling cleaning a shotgun on the front porch while blasting 'A Country Boy Can Survive' would probably work as well. I'm just glad my time in a neighborhood where rap was played constantly was short lived. Although now the lesbians across the road are starting to drive me nuts with their 4-wheelers.

Same old story - this used to be a quiet neighborhood full of older people, but as they've croaked or moved to nursing homes, the houses are starting to go to rentals and less desirable neighbors. I'm moving as soon as I can, but until then, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NelBNtNm8l0

Mozart is more effective, initially. If that doesn't enculturate them then try Heavy Metal with lots of guitar... :p

Funny thing, Templar. I'm Black and I STILL do the exact same thing. I love that music and would rock it in headphones prior to a judo competition and I'm laughed at in the gym for listening to same on my iPod.

No doubt. There was a black kid from Philly who was the same age as me in my first Infantry platoon (we were both 17, joined the week of our 17th birthday and were at our units before we turned 18) who was as much of a metalhead as I was...he got more shit from the other black guys than I ever saw a black guy get from the whites.

Tear-jerker country.
Some George Strait especially, if you have well-tuned speakers.

So am I the only on here who like Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers? I was brought up on them by my dad. In fact I managed to take my favorite son, The Moonshiner, and turned it into a lullaby for my kids. The fact that the song pissed my MIL off to no end made it even better for me.

I do some guitar work and polishing for a local studio. A couple of days ago we had a rapper in going off how Hip-Hop has the best bass compared everything else. I shook my head and said he hasn't been around much.

Well, honky came up while I smiled and nodded, getting an ear full that nothing thumps and pumps better than rap's bass lines. Cool, I get the whole rhythm thing, and do occasionally listen to hip-hop, but not the gangsta rap. (I'm more of blues guy; knowing how far most of the rappers have come and am ashamed how much they waste on only playing a few notes).

So, to settle this, I told him some very old music could put his bass theory to shame. He laughed and said bring it on.

Out comes J.S. Bach's Little Fugue for organ/keyboard. Yes, a pipe organ. For those who have never heard--it is considered ancient, coming from the Baroque period of the mid 1700's--it starts off with a theme played first in the alto range, then repeated through the soprano, and tenor. By now, the said rapper wasn't amused, only conveying his mocking thoughts with the shake of his head and a smirk.

But when the bass theme presented itself...his face fell faster than a water filled boot as the giant Crate PA system rattled the windows, and sent CD cases to the floor.

"What the f*** is that?" he asked quietly amused.

"That be a pipe organ. I've blown speakers with a few tracks from that instrument."

"Does that guy still play?"

I smirked. "No. He's dead...long dead."

A small education and a burned CD later, he was off to give some of his friends a new ass whooping.

However, I do believe I have now introduced pipe organs to rap music.

You most definitely are not! The "Irish" playlist on my itunes has several hours of music on it. Clancy Brothers, Dubliners, Flying Column, Wolfetones, and a shitload of others I can't think of this early in the morning. I can't get enough of that stuff.

QuietShootr, it is currently a lose-lose situation you are in. And as you may remember from a rather recent thread I had here early last summer, your situation has the ability to get bad real fast. It will depend on both your tolerance and their demeanor, the latter of which is out of your hands.

We all know he utterly ignorant, disrespectful scumbags that are fouling the neighborhood with rap. The question is who wins when one radio is blasted to drown out another? And what about the rest of the neighbors?

I would make multiple, anonymous calls to the police and see what impact it has first, then go from there. You are not some weak narc for taking that route, in fact look at the disaster I walked into trying to confront one of these pigs (pretty sure you chimed in that one).

If you really prefer the radio vs radio I guess that's your call, but it sounds like the animal(s) are destroying your quality of life. This whether you are looking to move soon or not.

I like that solution. I'm betting most of these folks aren't up and "open for business" any earlier than lunchtime.

Look up whatever noise ordinances are applicable and play it as early and loudly as allowed. If they complain, it's the perfect opening to point out their annoying habits and begin the negotiations. If they call the police on your music and the police come to you, explain the situation, gauge the police response, and then call them on the rappers the next time they create a small earthquake with their "music."

N/m, looked up the thread. Apparently I didn't weigh in on that one :-D The situation is a little different. If anyone gets a ride to jail it isn't going to be me :-D

Agreed, though, I am trying some other methods to handle it, but I'm attempting to do it so that it's less traceable back to me. If one of my dogs comes up poisoned I'm going to get very upset.

I hate the stuff, but some of that Norwegian Black metal stuff like Gorgoroth may be good rap repellent, but then that cure may be worse than the disease..those dudes are some seriously disturbed cats
