As promised in my “checking-in” post here:
https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=4026
below are some photos of my M&P flattop. Actually picked it up from layaway last month - but have since been so stretched for time - has taken me until now to post (been meeting myself though the door here lately, between work and home stuff - an interesting year so far….). Maybe just as well though, as has allowed me a little shake-down time at the range before writing here.

Anyway, a fairly traditional M4 design. Reasonable fit-n-finish (best on receiver, barrel less so).

My first AR with the fat M4 handguard (factory supplied), which I like. Definitely runs cooler than the skinnier item (and a lot cooler than my AK).

Fairly basic set-up with an Aimpoint ML2 red-dot scope on the rail and a Surefire G2 light up front. I will likely try-out the longer and brighter G3, and if that feels good, the G2 will return to my truck where it has been carried for the past couple of years.

The Aimpoint is on the Larue LT150 mount, which places the co-witness in the bottom 1/3rd of the field of view.

I like the factory-supplied rear flip-up, which sure looks a lot like the item made by Troy. Is it?

The light is mounted via the MI FSB clamp-type unit. Very solid and doesn't add too much up-front weight. Light is tailcap activated by the forward-pointing thumb of the weak hand. Very easy and natural feeling and avoids a tape switch, which I dislike not for the tape but because of the loose connecting wire.

Per-snic-u-larities? (1) The rear take-down pin is the tightest I’ve ever seen, and totally un-movable without using some kind of non-marring object. I’ve seen this commented on by at least one other M&P owner. Although I certainly appreciate a precise upper-to-lower fit, am also hoping it will eventually loosen up enough to push out bare handed.

(2) As posted separately here:
https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=5063
the bolt-carrier key loosened up after about the first 150 rounds, causing short stroking. Gun runs fine with it re-tightened, but more fundamentally the factory screw staking didn’t hold and must now be re-done. Kind-a pisses me off that as much as they’re charging for these guns, crap like this still happens. Must now either ship back under warranty or have remedied locally (more likely).

Motivation? In addition to fer-fun plinking, and maybe some local matches (if I can ever regain a handle on my time), this gun is intended mostly as a self-defense SHTF tool, hence the scope and light to enable near-dark engagement to 50+ yards in my rural-home setting. I first tried this set-up on an AK (Arsenal SLR-106), but didn’t like how it weighed down and mis-balanced that gun, which I now have wholly stripped down as a bug-out truck/trunk item. The M&P with the scope and light still weighs less than the naked AK (and is better balanced), and is now planned as the bug-IN gun.

Too bad there isn’t more currently available match-wise in my area for this M&P. There is one monthly 3-gun, but is nearly an hour’s drive from me. I miss the IDPA rifle and shotgun side matches that Templar and I used to run at my nearby member club (back before we both took-up tail chasing). Alas, time catches up with us all.......

I obtained a G3 last Friday and replaced the G2 with it. Doesn't have as much of a compact built-in look, but throws out nearly twice the light so must go with works best.

Wife liked the G2 though, so traded with her for the P9 she had in her nightstand, which now rides in my pickup.
